Who is QB1?

Besides the new look defense, this is the main thing everyone will be watching come fall camp. You have:

- The incumbent in Simon Romfo who missed spring ball and left a lot to be desired in his play last year.  

- The FBS transfer Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson who received money from the collective but sounds like didn’t have the smoothest transition during the spring. 

- The prized recruit in Jerry Kamniski who everyone has pretty much wanted to win the job since he’s gotten to campus. 

- The overlooked in Jack Sulik. Feels like people don’t think of him as a possibility but from all accounts he has impressed coaches and he has the size. 

What do you guys think?

I think all 4 have a chance.  So my top two starting qb picks would be Jerry Kaminski and Javance T. Johnson. But regardless of whoever gets the starting QB spot will have to show they've earned the starting qb spot.

I didn't vote, but it appears my thinking is in line with the majority in that it will be either Jerry or JTJ.

I'm not even speculating.   I remember how wrong I was last year.

I don't really care who is running the offense.  I just want to see a functional offense that can leverage our running game for exposive plays and utilize the TE.  With that said, it all about the running game.  Have to get that established.

I think if it’s close in fall camp between Jerry and JTJ, JTJ has the edge with his feet and will also hopefully be able to use his size similar to Q in short yardage situations.

I also think with Schmidt, we won’t have a starting QB play extended minutes in a blowout win or blowout loss. That perplexed me last season.
 

Schmidt says Iron sharpens iron. Can’t do that with reliance on just one piece of iron.

 

Competition doesn’t end in Fall camp, it is year round throughout your career. That’s what winners do.

Hoping someone grabs the QB1 job and runs away with it - that’s the best case scenario for UND football in 2025 and beyond.

This quarterback situation is a really good problem to have - any one of them could have a breakout seasons.  It should spur some very healthy competition in practices, which will make everyone better and the cream will rise to the top.  When your backups are nipping at the heals of your starters - good things happen for the team.

Whoever wins the job should be put in a really good spot to succeed. The OL will be a strength of this team, with 2 very good RBs behind them.

No Bo will hurt, but I’m hoping a couple of the transfers receivers turn out. I thought Hoskins looked good at the spring wrap up. I think we will also see solid seasons out of Dennis and Deng.

Hoping Dennis has a breakout season, looking back he was hung out to dry many times with passes that weren't there. I trust the coaches to put the players on the field who give us the best chance to win. I hope the new system gives more players time on the field when it matters and that the players really "buy in" to the system which means if you don't start you understand you keep working and you don't give up and head to the portal.

I think the question should be I haven’t heard or at least put forth in great deal what kind of offense are we going to run under Schmidt. Each of quarterbacks have strengths and weaknesses as quarterbacks. Last year we had offense that required movement from quarterback and was expected to be runner which Romfo fit the most he was not drop back in the pocket quarterback. The other two leading quarterbacks are more traditional quarterback sitting in pocket or moving pocket to hit receivers running their routes. What I see we have now no proven wide receiver that will be threat to go too last year we had Bo at least to go to for the quarterback. I look to our running backs probably going to be our first choice at least starting the season.  The offense this year will start from running backs and then quarterback to make play off when he doesn’t handoff trying to find open player or pull down ball create something running . The determining  factor quarterback hasJerry or Jack improved enough to  excel under this system. I just don’t see where we have made big changes on offense for coming year we have added few transfers but will they make impact will not know until season begins.  I think also deciding quarterback who will be how they effective are  in using the TE in offense with our quality running backs we have and good offensive line  to exploit our running game. My expectations is will see big improvement on defensive side of team and if offense can be similar to last year we could have very successful season.

contrary to popular belief but jerry is the best athlete at the qb postion 3 years running now...even more so than romfo

he can really run...he can really really throw....he's a tough sob

If that is case he should be hands down next quarterback but if that he has been best like you say there has to be reason for him not being quarterback. I don’t know I just trust our coaches put best athlete out on the field they are ones evaluating talent. I expect that what will happen this year and I believe it also happened years before even with different offensive coordinators we had our best talent on the field to run offense we are running.

too much "trust" and not enough wins....there is a reason why our coaches retire or go d2 instead of going up like a certain crew down south does....

any of the j's im good with and let him learn and grow like gronwoski in mooville sodak did....run the ball, make the throws you have to make (like the one that simon threw into the stands in ames that should've been an easy td)....and move the chains with your feet from time to time....
