Any player that is committing this soon after the portal opens already knew their destination prior to entering the portal.
And if the rumors are true that Berry wasn’t doing much recruiting prior to his departure, then it makes sense that we don’t have any portal commits yet.

How quickly has Jackson gone hard into the portal, that is the question. Now that the press conference is done, I'd guess he's doing 12 hour days at the office for awhile now.

Jumping ship is jumping ship, I guess.  ;)

I don't agree. Leaving to go pro means you are ready to move on to the next chapter in life, and lots of players aren't expected to stay more than two years anyway. Leaving via the portal means the grass is greener (and NIL $ probably) at a different school. UND has done well with portal players but I still hate free agency in college sports!

First USports player

Pardon my ignorance but what is usports?  Is it simply like the ncaa college type teams in Canada? I have never heard of it until this week

I believe Jackson said in his press conference that Simmer wasn't there because he was on the road recruiting? Or maybe that was just wishful thinking

I used to be the same way, but I accept it now without begrudging these kids anything.  I realized it was just the fan in me that was angry.

I went to school, once.  If I had wanted to, I could have switched colleges or universities every year, and so long as they were willing to let me in, I was free to make the move.  Why should college athletes be any different?

The other thing we have to remember is college is likely the only time in their hockey playing career that they get a true choice as to where to go, whether to switch teams, and how long they want to stay with one team.  Hard to be critical of them for taking advantage of it.

True, but in the same way, I don't feel sorry for any of them when they aren't able to find a new place to play out of the portal, or if their current coaches tell them they are no longer needed because they have found a better player.  This kind of free agency cuts both ways.

Hopefully UND gets some decent portal crumbs after every other team that has their **** together calls dibs.

If I recall, UND has brought in some very valuable portal players very late in the game (no pun intended)

I agree.  I hate the portal (as a fan).   But as a student athlete, I can totally understand it.

As a fan I wish it would go away.  But since it's here, use it.

Any news on Gibson Homer?

McMahon mentioned a couple days ago that Homer was favoring UND, but no word since. Which means that Heil probably isn't coming in next year. Jackson should be all over him, so don't understand why there hasn't been any commitment yet; unless Homer's trying to arrange an NIL deal or speaking to other schools now, etc. Who knows. You would think that with UND's strong D next year that it would be a drawing point for any incoming goalie.

What kind of player is Evan Werner ? About the same #’s as Perron and has two years of eligibility.

Was wondering about him as well. Same thing as Whitelaw where he’s going for his 3rd team in 3 years, so unsure.

BU really buying up the forwards.
Wonder if Misa is still planning on heading there too…that was the hot rumor a few months ago.

Even with a poor O Playoffs right now, Misa has a legit shot to go straight from junior to the NHL (of course depends on who drafts him). A team like the Boston Bruins, who strongly supports NCAA route development, might steer him in the direction of 1 year in the NCAA for better development & steer him to Boston University or Boston College for ease of access.

Like I've mentioned before, I expect Michigan to make a serious push for several CHLers, Misa probably included. Michigan has opened up a ton of spots and still has plenty of space after Perron committed there, they aren't slated to bring in too many freshmen right now and can defer some of their guys a year by sending em back to junior.

Good points. But you will never get the players that "bleed green" and you won't see the comments from portal players like the comments from Knight, Cags, Boeser, etc. made in the Herald article.

Question a friend asked me about.

So do the guys who enter the portal turn in their access cards now or hang onto them the rest of the semester?

Do they move their meal plans to another facility on campus?

Do they have to find alternate work out facilities?

I'm wondering the same thing.  I mean the scholarships that they have last through the end of the semester, so I'm sure that UND would have to keep them fed at the very least.  Boisvert would be in the dorms as a freshman until May, but Perron and McLaughlin likely in an apartment or a house off campus.

I know that some schools like Colorado Football with Coach Prime completely shut off their facilities to players that enter the portal, as they aren't technically in the program anymore.

I'm not sure I agree. Hunter Johannes was at UND only 1 year and appears to bleed green. I suspect that there are others.

Well thought, as usual, Hovey.

@Godsmack any intel on Werner?  Not sure if we're in the conversation with him, but he has decent numbers.
