Im not saying Bubba is Coach S.. but FFS lets roll and be a little optimistic on the 2023 Football thread not the fire bubba thread. Emphasizing exceptions to the rule other than the norm doesn’t help any. Try calling a spade a spade … We’re all hopeful 2023 will be a great year, but that doesn’t mean concerns can’t be highlighted also. Quote

Im surprised DeMontagnac is listed as a starter. Nice to see McNeal listed as starter. Noticed New Mexico DL transfer not listed on 2 deep but the transfer nose is listed as starter. Buckner and KK listed at safety, I would assume Fort is in the mix there and wouldn’t be surprised if he starts later this year. I wouldn’t put nearly any stock into this depth chart. It’s game #1 against a non-scholly non-conference team … things will solidify over the next 2-3 weeks Quote

Other than Drake this D will get pushed around, forcing the secondary to make too many tackles, then get butchered on PA. Any OC with half a brain is thinking about their 2 TEs run package vrs our pretty small front. Yeah, the defensive disaster from 2022 is unlikely to get corrected in just one year. Can’t get a bunch worse, but won’t get a ton better either, especially with in-house promotion. Offense is going to have to win shoot outs against the good teams on the schedule … again, this is quickly (if not already) becoming the associate head coach’s team … Quote

After seeing the depth chart, It will be interesting to see if scheme and coaching make a big difference. Last year's safety play was the worst it's been in decades and I was surprised to see the same guy back there. I hope coaching matters, time will tell.. The new defensive coordinator was last year’s safety coach … There will be plenty of heartbreak and explosive plays against good teams, no doubt. Again, pressure is all on Freund’s offense and the experienced O-line to put up 30+ points every single game. Quote

Also the FBS transfer has a lot of experience and he has the size needed, they can also put him in at DE if teams are trying to run all over us or going two TE's. Plus we have a dude at NG.....25 lbs heavier than we've had the past couple of years. I think we will be improved on the DL this year. Fort started for us at Safety last year right? Buckner is starting over him....so I take that as a good sign and Buckner may be who we were hoping he would be. Excited to see what Pedigo and McNeal can do at ILB. This interior plan sounds better than being a bunch of turtles on our backs. All outside LBs 6'1"-6'2" and 220-225 lbs. Boise, Jacks, Bison, probably smart enough to test our LBs vrs 2 TEs. Quote

Go Hawks! … the truth just burns some of you sensitive (homer) folk, doesn’t it? I don't think the truth burns anyone ... just hearing the same nagging and complaining over and over and over. I'll definitely question the safety position and why it has been so hard for us to recruit someone to fill in and be that guy. I love KK's intensity and energy on the field, but he has definitely been burned too many times over the years. I'm not a football guru, so I don't know if this is simply KK is too slow to play safety or if he was confused by the scheme or complexity of the D. Is it possible he was being asked to do too much because of our linebackers having issues? Really hoping we have someone who can step up and challenge him, mostly because if we don't have someone close to doing that, we will continue to have question marks at the position for the next few years. Also really hoping that simplifying the defense will help him, but I guess we will have to wait and find out. I think it would be great to see KK just step up and be a dude this year. 2 3 Quote

Do you think undersized LBs and missed tackles are part of the reason we struggle at Safety? Are those guys worried too much about stepping up to stop the run and that is why we see them get burned? Or just too slow and not skilled enough at the safety position? Quote

Dale Lennon kept Ryan Chappell under wraps and then surprised UNI with him when we beat them in 2006. It’s not a novel concept under Bubba. 2 Quote

Would love to see him burst on the season and make a splash against Boise or one of the SUs. If he is going to be a game changer and truly help us win games, then burning the RS seems fine. If he isn't, then I just hope the coaches are strategic about utilizing his 4. Quote
