Students Spearhead Effort for Fighting Hawks Mascot

The old nickname and logo have become anachronism, something that is not in its correct historical or chronological time, something that belongs to an earlier time.

That is reality.

You may freely choose to be anachronism as well, or be in the present.

So......getting back to the mascot.  Rickabaugh Graphics, who is designing the mascot, has done mascots for other scools like Ohio St, Iowa, and UCF to name a few.  You can check out their portfolio:

First, Iowa's Herky Hawk ... ah, yuck. No birds with teeth.

I wonder if part of a mascot they'll comment or make recommendations on the current logo. Or if they'll set the stage for a secondary logo. I'd like to see some things done with the hawk head and the word marks (North Dakota), or even the outline of the state, like they did for Iowa.

This isn't the point. People understand that the name isn't coming back. They just don't like it and are trying to "cope" with it and that is on their own time.

There is nothing wrong with having a secondary logo.  Make Minnesota for example.  the maroon M is their primary.  But you see the Goldy logo used a lot as well.  I could see taking the head of the mascot and turning it into a secondary logo.  Now will that new secondary logo be accepted by the hardcore anti Hawks crowd....probably not.  But maybe it will seed up the "timeline" for some.

I just said "reality." Forgive me, but I'm going to go all Augustinian on y'all for a minute.

St. Augustine, in the Summa, he sums up TRUTH as "conformity of mind and reality." In logical truth, the mind is conformed (meaning in agreement or alignment) with things outside the mind, either in assenting to what is or in denying what is not. Its opposite is error.

The UND nickname today is "Fighting Hawks". That is reality. If your mind aligns with this you know truth. If not, as Augustine would posit, it is in error.

If you don't like this, take it up with Augustine. People have tried for a millennia.

For those who do understand, as I did yesterday, I wish them well on their way through or out of their chronic grief.

However, I do believe there are a significant number who do not understand, and do not see truth.

I'd come up with some ideas when the logo was first rolled out.
And here's proof I ain't no graphic ar-teest. :D

I'd say there's a number. Not sure it's significant. But, I do agree with your point.

You know what I'd like to see as a secondary logo? The logo that UND Insider uses, but without the Hawk.

The task force was given the following directives for the new name and/or logo:

1.  Be inspiring - fail

2. Honorable - fail

3. Represent the state and region - fail

4. Source of pride - fail

5. Represent UND - fail

In the task force meeting minutes it states "It should be remembered that respect for and acceptance of the new nickname cannot be mandated, but rather needs to be earned."

Where am I going with this?  The task force failed on the name. UND needs to salvage this by flushing the 1st try at the logo and getting us something that fits the criteria the that the stakeholders asked for.

I have moved on from the FS name so don't put me in that Sioux forever camp.  Many of us will not settle for what we ended up with, bland and unimaginative.

Well said! Particularly the last sentence.

I think we can all agree that the committee failed big time following their own directives in picking a nickname.  That being said, There is no chance they they are going to scrap the whole thing and start again from scratch.  Given the time, resources, and most importantly money it would take to develop and implement a new nickname and logo, I don't see that happening.

Did the committee screw up?  Yep.  Is the nickname bland and unoriginal?  Yep.  Could the logo have been better?  Yep.  But That is the reality we are living in right now.  Focusing our efforts accepting what we have goes a lot further than resisting something we can't change.

That's not what I said.  Scrap the logo and start over.

Military theme (aircraft?) or my favorite (2 tomahawks crossed).  Since there is no such thing as a fighting hawk bird, the tomahawks could be fighting tomahawks!

Wouldn't that take an entirely new campaign theme, etc?  Its been clarified that UND's Hawk is a bird.

Yes.  A bird does not meet the criteria set forth by the stakeholders.  I needs to be scrapped.

Why doesn't a bird represent the criteria?

It's the same thing 40 other schools chose when they decided to give up their NA name.  Another bird is not inspiring, honorable, source of pride, need I go on?

A Hawk is exactly all those things in general terms.  Because another school has that name doesn't mean a 'Hawk', in itself, loses those qualities.  You are generalizing too many things.
