Talking about donors and fans in Minot no longer being donors and fans for UND. It would have an impact.

We could bequeath our women's hockey program to Minot St. :xmas: If they go DI, they will have both men's and women's.  Both are listed under the Beaver athletics site, which is rare for club teams.

I have buddies who live in Bemidji that are UND donors.......they go to Beaver games when UND isn't in town. They give nothing to BSU. Those you speculate on taking their support from UND to MiSU are going to be few and far between at best.

There are quite a few folks from the west that come to F'n Hawk games & I bet some even contribute

I lived in Both Minot & Bismarck very close to Dickinson & also Lived in Williston pre-oil I have no desire to go back there - but if I did Bismarck  would be my 1st choice & Hockey would be a great addition - (I know Bismarck has Hockey but if they had donars to take it to higher levels) that would be cool & good for all those towns

Maybe UND WILLISTON TETONs COULD USE THE OLD SIOUX LOGO ? :D

The BOOM MIGHT BE OVER BUT GROWTH & MONEY ARE GOING TO BE THERE FOR A LONG TIME

I didn't know Weber State has a nice hockey arena on campus (2000 seats).

Utah State has a decent arena to play in (2200).

BYU and Utah Valley could easily expand Peaks Ice Arena to 8,400 (Olympic capacity) from its current 2300.

Utah has the Maverick Center when the ECHL team plays (could be the home of Las Vegas' AHL team).

Wait and see how Arizona State and potentially UNLV, if they move up, do at the NCAA D1 before anyone in the west makes a move.

Sacramento would be my guess for Vegas' AHL affiliate. Closer to the rest of the teams and downtown arena ready for it.

The ECHL team in Salt Lake City plays in a 12,000+ seat arena and would be closer to Las Vegas.

so any word on what ASU is gonna do?

any news out of UNLV?

Nothing more on ASU other then Powers hinting to an on campus arena.

The Coyotes owner said a arena should be announced soon (beginning of the season, hasn't happened yet).

UNLV moves up to ACHA D1 next year. Zee Kahn said that the will be moving to the new NHL practice arena being built in Summerlin. Kahn also said the team is looking to play their NCAA games at Orleans Arena or South Point as possible arenas (South Point Arena would need a renovation) and the Tomas & Mack Center is too big.

And almost forgot, Dean Blais mentioned Alabama's hockey team at the fan luncheon when Omaha was up in Alaska.

Mavpuck might know more about it.

It sounds like it had to do with Alabama (the head coach) trying to build a hockey arena on campus.

So apparently according to a tweet by Todd Milewski, UAF and UAA want to get an exemption from DII to lower their sports offerings to 8 rather than the required 10.  That could save hockey at both schools and drop skiing.

Would think the WCHA would almost rush Simon Fraser and Minot St to DI hockey and create a western division, so the other schools don't have to travel so much.

Hockey did survive.

The Alaska schools aren't cutting any sports, but will do some major fundraising to save some sports like skiing.  The Alaska schools petitioned the NCAA to drop to eight sports each, under the DII minimum of ten.  The NCAA responded that they don't grant permission to violate it's rules, but they do offer forgiveness in certain cases.  So the Alaska schools didn't want to rely on NCAA forgiveness and are fundraising now for skiing and athletics in general.

With the Alaska schools still hurting financially, would not surprised if the WCHA offered Simon Fraser a spot and temporarily gave Ariz St membership for a couple years while it's rink is being built.  A new western division could be formed, where schools won't get a travel subsidy to go to Alaska.  The Minnesota and eastern schools wouldn't have to go to Alaska more than once, saving major dollars and time.

The WCHA will have to have a replacement lined up for Ariz St when it gets a new rink and the NCHC offers it.  Ariz St needs a conference schedule soon to give it a chance at an NCAA autobid.  Minot State could be the WCHA's choice to replace Ariz St.  If UNLV or SDSU go ahead with hockey, Mankato is stuck in the WCHA.

The Arizona St. situation illustrates there are more considerations to operating in D1 than just announcing a move, even for a P5.  It is highly improbable that Minot would go D1.  Lack the needed sustained funding, would need a facility, and would need people with D1 experience to spearhead campaign. They would need old CCHA teams to break away from WCHA.

Simon Fraser would have some unique hurdles of their own.

Be careful what you wish for on western D1 expansion.  It could result in Denver and CC leaving NCHC despite history with UND.

Minot St has better potential facility access, All Seasons Arena, than what Arizona St has now.  Why can't Minot St be another Bemidji St?  Minot is much wealthier now than in the past and it has historically been a power ACHA program, which takes money. A major driver of DI hockey is decent existing facilities.  Even the dregs of the AHA are almost all upgrading to first class digs, when many thought that American International, Bentley, Holy Cross, and Sacred Heart would drop hockey.

Denver and CC might want more SW schools, but it also wants UND and Omaha.  Miami and W Mich are the odd men out, and they will have to get a new CCHA built.  Duluth and St Clown might be looking at the WCHA again, but further down the road.  UND is the class of DI hockey, and any western league would want us.

Obviously, you do not have any real insight to the Minot situation.  if you did, you would know the history the hockey community has with the State Fair board.  You have no clue about the economic situation in Minot.

Recent history has shown, long time rivalries can take a back seat to conference selection and movement.

Never thought they could afford DII.  Somehow they found money.  The only reason to go DII was so hockey could go DI later, as they have done zilch in DII but have higher bills.  But OK, if you insisted on underestimating Minot St.

So Minot's move to D2 was just a ruse to get D1 hockey, brilliant.  I sure that is based on you personal discussions with administration and boosters at the time of the move.  So when are they going to make the announcement or are they waiting to develop an app for that?

Another person that isn't capable of strategic thinking.

This is in Non-UND College hockey thread, not really college hockey expansion news anymore for ASU.

MSU club hockey plays in the MAYSA, which is a terrible facility to watch hockey.  I've heard the new addition is a little better, but still not great.
