I also got my pilots license at the Brookings airport so had many trips to Brookings for that. So I thought I could throw out some good food joints for all you fellow Sioux fans stuck in my old stomping grounds. It has been 24 years since I've lived there so I don't know a lot of the newer stuff but given the sad fact that most new businesses now days are of the corporate variety I'm guessing I'm not missing much. Further, I have eaten in all the places I am recomending in the last two years and we know that things don't change much in those parts. Watertown: Senior Max's mexican in the mall. Same two cooks since the days I worked at the mall back in the 80's. Good American Mexican food, I like the chimichanga and the mexican pizza, tasty sanchos as well. If you want a good steak that isnt much of a drive in the bad weather, go to the drake motor inn(also a hotel), they have a very good steak house. If you want pizza, and like thick pizza that is thick not just from the crust but because of the cheese you have to try Empire pizza down town. This is my favorite pizza anywhere, I miss it!! Brookings: Speaking of missing something, Nicks burgers is a MUST!! Since 1929, (buy the book). This place is the Red Pepper of those parts. Little delicious burgers, I eat two doubles and one single. located Downtown Brookings. Georges Pizza, Also downtown Brookings has great Gyro's if you like greek food. Brookings also has a good barbeque at a joint just down the highway from the Exit where all the hotels are. It is good barbeque for South Dakota, and I lived in Kansas City for 5 years. Was this not an doable route a few days back? I'm just curious because I'm from around that area, and I suppose I could have suggested this route, but assumed conditions were the same into Minnesota. shortbusguy Posted February 11, 2013 Share Posted February 11, 2013 We took a round about way home yesterday, I-29 to north of Sioux Falls, east to Pipestone, MN, north on 75 until the plow called it a day, east to Morris, north on 59 to I-94 (which was closed about 45 minutes before we got there), spent the night in Fergus Falls, woke up this morning and went north on 59 to MN 108, then west to the old hwy 52 and into Moorhead. We left Applebee's and were on our way to check into our room at the Holiday Inn Express. As we drove by the I-29 on-ramp, a plow was clearing the entrance so we decided to pull into the truck stop parking lot and wait. Within about 5 minutes, the road opened to the ND border and people started running to their cars. Just as we were taking the off-ramp to the casino, I-29 to Fargo was opened. We just got home about 10 minutes ago. It was an interesting couple of days. If you look just to the right of the ROAD CLOSED sign, you'll see the plow truck coming to lift the gate. Siouxman Posted February 12, 2013 Share Posted February 12, 2013 We spent Monday night in Brookings and got home about 11:15 am this morning. Brookings to Watertown was still mostly ice and compacted snow. That was the worst part. The best part was discovering that our neighbor arranged for a snow removal company to clean our driveway yesterday. A fantastic surprise as I was expecting to spend several hours doing that. Overall, this was a memorable trip. While the outdoor game was not a big thrill for us, the Sioux fans gathering by third base to cheer the team as it left the ice for the lockerroom was several moments to cherish. Those that gave road reports really assisted is the decisions of thousands of travelers. I am also glad that this thread stayed on course and was not derailed off topic..it goes to show that the North Dakota nice holds true...this is something we heard countless times over the weekend from servers and staff at places we went...they could not believe how well we as fans carried ourselves..I think one of our servers at the Old Mattress Factory put it best as she was wearing UND pom-poms in her back pockets..she said "you people drink a lot..eat a lot and tip well why wouldn't I root for your team" This will definitely be one of those trips we will not forget and just goes to show that the UND Fighting SIOUX truly do have the greatest fans on the entire planet Thanks again Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
