We just took a bedroom next to our master bedroom and converted it all into a master bedroom/bathroom.  We love the facilities upgrade; but want to be clear we have no intention of going FBS or making the Final Four.

Obviously you dont think like a university president.  If you did you would be FBS already while making those renovations.:xmas:

What's funny is that the basketball center was announced two weeks before they announced they were dropping football.

On top of that, your post was mocked because of how you tried to position Jacksonville's past success in basketball, which consists of a single Cinderella run a half century ago and no NCAA appearances in 34 years. It had nothing to do with them sticking some of the savings into other sports. The ability to support other sports better was a huge part of their reasoning to drop football and no one disagreed with that.

So cost cutting has nothing to do with raising extra capital cost, per jdub27 pathetic illogic unless they announce both on the same day.  You disagreed on helping mbb because it was in the toilet for 50 years, but their alumni still care and have dreams.

If they didn't care, they could have gone NAIA or DIII, as both are much cheaper.

I guess we all have different life goals.  Some of us don’t need FBS; for example, I’ll feel content, and know that I’ve “made it,” if one day there’s a bidet in this new luxurious bathroom.

So the Macalester President disagrees that St Thomas was involuntarily expunged from the MIAC.  But that story just so happens to be a better one to tell the NCAA so it bends the rules.  Earlier, the Summit League said it would invite UST even before the expulsion if the NCAA bends the rules.

I had posted on a Gopher board that UST wanted DI for its sports to be like Marguette and Creighton and was raked and banned for that, but who was right after all?

don't think this is anything new or breaking but from a very good wcha source ..UAA, UAF, and Huntville will be kicked out or 7 wcha teams will leave to form a new conference or rebrand as ccha and look for a eighth team (asu being target 1)..done deal after the year ends.

Huntsville has already announced this past Novemberthat they are leaving the WCHA after next season.  UAF and UAA will have to find more western teams soon (Simon Fraser and Arizona St?) or lose their WCHA autobid.  Huntsville may have Liberty, High Point, Austin Peay, Lindenwood, and FGCU already lined up, but not necessarily all in the same year.  The midwestern WCHA seven announced they are leaving last summer, and they can get an eighth team from St Thomas or maybe Wis-Eau Claire.  With seven teams that left in masse, the new CCHA will have an immediate autobid.

Did anyone listen to the Bill Chaves podcast that talked about how more Summit teams will leave and others would join?  Was intending too but didn’t get a chance.  The twitter piece that says this was issued a couple of days ago.  Seems it was deleted.

All the podcasts are out there if you use the TuneIn app.

The podcasts were from this fall when the Summit was again going through reverberations.  Don’t know why there were posted on twitter recently.  Can still be found on SoundCloud.

There is growing dissatisfaction and disgust that NDSU has not moved to FBS after all the FCS championships.

https://csnbbs.com/thread-892210-post-16605866.html#pid16605866

https://csnbbs.com/thread-892284-post-16608080.html#pid16608080

But NDSU is simply not big league enough to afford the MWC or meet their needs.

The MAC doesn’t want them as it’s not regional to them.

The only option is if the Montanas and Weber, Idaho and EWU move to the Summit and declare themselves FBS.

UND would have to respond then, either keep up or get out..  The Montanas and Idaho want FBS at the most affordable rate.

Missouri St is apparently deciding between Bobby Petrino and Art Briles for their new football coach.  They will be heading to the WAC ImHO for FBS only so they need to massively upgrade their coaches.

Also, there are tweet that say it will be Petrino.

Why don't they just join their MVFC brethren in the FBS Summit?

They don't want to leave the big paycheck from MVC mbb.  Texas is also too important for recruiting for fb and students.

Their long term goal is a split western CUSA.

Their undergrad enrollment is almost as large as Mizzou’s now and they want to continue that growth.

There have been discussions that ODU, UMass, Buffalo, and other FBS schools will fill UConn’s spot in the American.

One school not mentioned was Stony Brook, which is already AAU academically, and wants to move to FBS.  It would give the American an academically great school in the center of populous Long Island, but it almost certainly needs to be FBS first.  NDSU has almost none of these advantages.

Some would agree that football alone is not the answer.

Before folks jump all over that point of view, ask yourself: Would you rather your favorite university (a) win the umpteenth title in a sport, or (b) come out with the vaccine and cure for all forms of cancer?

Sports are a pleasant distraction, but universities are still fundamentally about academics and the pursuit of knowledge.  And ultimately, that's why a total package (academics, research, athletics, demographics) matters to fellow university presidents. You are the company you keep.

I take issue with Port's article for lots of reasons, so let's break a couple down.

He has issue with Bresciani calling NDSU one of the biggest and best universities in the nation. Port said this:

Quote

Just so we're clear, the contention here is that NDSU's football team playing in a championship game broadcast on national network television makes the school "one of the biggest and best universities in the nation."

But do we know the question that was asked? The first part of the answer from Bresciani is key:

Quote

The biggest, best universities in the nation fit that niche.

So what is that niche? I'd imagine it's a question phrased like " What does it mean to be on such a visible stage like ABC on a Saturday in January?"

In that case, Besciani isn't stating NDSU is one of the biggest and best universities in all the land. He saying it's one of the biggest and best universities still playing football on national television on a Saturday after the first week of January. And in that case, he's 100% correct.

The rest of your post is obviously 100% correct. Yeah, if UND cured cancer that would be a bigger deal than anything any university has ever done in sports. There's nothing saying you can't have that great mix of the four things you mentioned. And nothing in Port's article touches on that.

What he does say is this:

Quote

Which brings me to the other point Bresciani made. How, exactly, does winning a football championship improve academics?

He then goes on to say that it doesn't, but I disagree. There's nothing that says a great scientist isn't also interested in football, or hockey. The same can be said for every career line. If NDSU football, or UND hockey, winning attracts students who have great potential in their career field to a smaller university because they also like hockey... that's a positive for those schools. Does it make the university better? Probably. It's not all about funding and the current set of professors. It's about attracting quality students. I guarantee UND and NDSU have attracted students they normally wouldn't have because of the success of their athletic teams.

But just like Port can't prove the opposite, I can't prove the positive. But which is more likely?

Quote

Sports are a pleasant distraction, but universities are still fundamentally about academics and the pursuit of knowledge.

Sports aren't only a pleasant distraction. They're the most visible part of a university for a lot of potential students. If you think athletics don't play a decision in many a student's choice of university, then we'd be seeing much higher attendance at universities that only focus on academics.

Here's an old article that Montana seriously flirted with the old WAC but didn’t move at the time as Montana St had too much costly work, like expanding their stadium and both needed better FBS facilities.  Never mind adding 22 scholarships for the men, more sports and schollies for the women, so it was just too massive a cost at once.  But Montana St soon borrowed money for a stadium expansion to get ready.  They are now both ready except for women’s sporting additions and 22 more scholarships

Now is the time to change leagues and move the whole league up.  In 2011, a new league wouldn’t qualify for the CFP payout. A new league could qualify in 2025 for CFP if it started the FBS move by 2023.

How can the Montana schools add 22 Scholarships when they can't afford FCOA?

FCOA is relatively minor and their will be more revenue sources available (CFP, more FBS opponent guarantees, etc)
