IrishSiouxFan Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I do know one thing for certain, I don't want UND to adopt the nickname Rough Riders. Here's why http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=rough%20rider Quote
Ranger Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Revert to Flickertails and wear the true school color... Pink. That should please a few out there (FB, BB fans). Quote
Hawkster Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Nokota's or Fighting Spirit. Both are unique and fit our guidelines. No name is not an option. 1 Quote
ShilohSioux Posted June 14, 2011 Author Posted June 14, 2011 Aside from the "for a period of time" part, that is exactly how I feel. But the thing is I won't be any more accepting of a new nickname 10 or 20 years from now than I am today. I don't know exactly what percentage of the fanbase I represent with that statement, but I do know that I'm not alone in feeling that way. Ok, we get it. But since this isn't an option, some of us would like to try and influence the new name. No one says you have to participate, but thinking we can go on without a nickname is naive. Quote
108498 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I think most of us can agree that nearly all UND supporters would choose to retain the Fighting Sioux name. But, as this week's Big Sky warning letter indicates, baring an unlikely reversal at Standing Rock, we likely won't have that option without repercussions from the Big Sky Conference as well as the NCAA and other universities. We are now potentially facing being expelled from the BSC if we persist, which would be the deathblow for UND sports other than hockey. Now, we can sit back and let others choose our new name, or we can take the offensive and help take charge of our future. What name do we prefer? Quote
108498 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I would return to the oldest tradition before the Sioux back to the Flicker Tails. It may not be the Sioux, but at least not all tradition is lost. The only thing is I would not go back to pink and green. Quote

Kelly has already assured everyone that we will not revert back to the Flicker Tail logo (Thank God!). Quote
108498 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 The problem with that is they could choose the best nickname on the planet and people here will absolutely hate it, we should at least wait 6-10 years before moving on. Look at Ole Miss, they gave hardcore supporters an appropriate amount of time to grieve before beginning the search for a replacement. I wish there were someway to change the Sioux logo for all sports with the exception of men's hockey (that's where it will hurt the most to see it's absence) Quote
108498 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 change the logo I don't care the fans can cheer for the sioux all they want. A name on the jersey does not make a team or a masoc. Its the fans that make the team who it is. If we are the flames.. GO Sioux. If we are the rough riders... Go Sioux Quote
IrishSiouxFan Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 That's your prerogative, and for a while that is exactly what will happen. But as time goes bye and people come and go UND will have established a new identity over a period of time. It will be and should be up to future generations to decide the best way to honor or school, as they will see it to new heights we only dreamed of. Quote
darell1976 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 But it IS an option, that's what you don't seem to understand. There is no rule in place that mandates all NCAA teams must have a nickname. (sigh) Here are the colleges without nicknames: http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/#None However not 1 of them on the list have athletics. This one sounds pretty cool: Green Terror --- McDaniel College (Westminster, Maryland) (former name: Western Maryland College) Quote
CAS4127 Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 The main thing that I loved about the Fighting Sioux logo was that it was entirely unique. There are a lot of institutions using the same the logo and mascots like the Huskies, Eagles, Trojans, Aggies, and Bison. But only one Fighting Sioux, it set us apart and said that we are a university worthy of our own personal identity. I agree with you, that keeping the logo could very possibly spell certain doom for UND athletics. However, could we forego a nickname and logo for a period of time in order to find something unique and worthy of UND? Just my opinion. Quote

darell1976 Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Because not 1 of them on the list have athletics, it would be groundbreaking and innovative for UND to have athletics without a nickname. More importantly, it would make a bold statement that if you're going to take our nickname away we will not replace it with a new one. We don't NEED a nickname, as the name UND speaks for itself. It would also give our fans for many generations to come a chance to tell the story (when fans of opposing teams ask us why our team doesn't have a nickname) of how we suffered the ultimate injustice at the hands of the corrupt and meddling NCAA, therefore keeping the Fighting Sioux nickname somewhat alive at least in spirit. Slapping a new nickname on our athletic teams is like spitting all over the grave of our old nickname, and to be perfectly frank it sickens me that any so-called Fighting Sioux fan would actually tolerate this hijacking of the team we all love so much. Is that what they did in 1930 when they replaced Flickertails with the Sioux? Quote
darell1976 Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 That's an apples to oranges comparison. Fans weren't emotionally attached to the Flickertails name back then like we are now to the Fighting Sioux name. Oh I am sure there were some Flickertail hopefuls. Quote

dakota fairways Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Stanford's nickname is cardinal -- their primary color, not the bird as in the St. Louis Cardninals. Since being the Whites or the Blacks would more than likely also be ruled hostile and abusive, are you suggesting the Sioux become the Kelly or the Green? Quote

It's not going to happen. Yes, we all understand what you are saying... We CAN go without a nickname, but it will NOT happen. It's nearly impossible to market a team with out a gimmick/name/logo. In the end, athletics are all about money and profit and there is no way that the higher ups will go without a gimmick/name/logo. Can you name a school with an athletics team, or any team for that matter, anywhere in the world that has survived successfully without a name? No... that's because it has never happened. The higher ups will NOT let us go without a name other than a short, probationary time, and still then, I don't even think that will happen. I want more than anything to keep the name but it is looking like more and more every day that that will not and should not happen. We need a name to make money for our sports. Period. It's just time to be rational.... sad days. Quote

Chewey Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 When I think of the big-time Division I schools I don't think of their nicknames first and foremost, I think of the school name first. The nickname is usually an afterthought. I think that UND has been one of the few schools that markets their nickname first, which makes it all that much more heartbreaking to let it go if and when that time comes. But my point is that Michigan markets themselves as Michigan, the fact that their nickname is the Wolverines is secondary. How often do you see Michigan gear with a wolverine on it? Almost never, it's usually just that big yellow M. Same goes for most of the D1 schools that are big-time in the money making sports. Yeah, they have nicknames but they really don't even need them as they are rarely referred to in many cases. Now, you may be right that the higher ups will insist that we have a name... I'm just saying that it will not make it any easier to market our teams that way. If anything it'll make it more difficult. Without the Fighting Sioux name we can safely assume that sales of UND gear will decrease, but I think with a new name those sales would decrease even more so than if they went without a nickname. I would consider buying UND gear with the "ND" logo for a no-nickname team that we could still "unofficially" refer to as the Sioux, but I will NEVER EVER buy another piece of UND gear if and when any other nickname is attached to the hockey or football teams. I realize that I don't represent every Sioux fan, but I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way either. A big DITTO for me. Quote
MoSiouxFan Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Given that we have to change the name, I kind of like The Fighting Nodaks. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 The North Dakota Green?? I kinda like it! We'd need this guy and his family to sign off on it or we'd be "hostile and abusive" again. Quote
