Vote on your final 5 nickname choices (just ND is out)
Siouxphan27 replied to jimdahl's topic in UND Nickname
True. Although i'd argue Oregon State's Beavers were actually from Oregon. (they weren't beavers that a New York politician recruited from the states of Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.) -

I agree- let's just rally around whichever name I decide I like the best- that makes the most sense from my point of view. -

Maybe I've missed some info lately....But....If the committee's job is done now anyway, what was the point of the threat to disband the committee if 'North Dakota' remained on the list to hand in to the El Presidente? -
Vote on your final 5 nickname choices (just ND is out)

I haven't read the nickname threads for about 3 weeks....what a pleasant 3 weeks it has been. I would have voted North Dakota if it was still an option assuming we get a vote. I don't understand the vitriol directed at those that would've voted for North Dakota. It's not accurate to assume everyone of us are fighting Sioux forever fanatics. It's also inaccurate to believe fighting Sioux chants and support will disappear whether a new name was chosen or not. A few reasons I liked North Dakota- 1. Unique, 2. Indirectly tells the PC and NCAA to pound sand. 3. The selection process has been a disaster leaving only generic and poor options. Now that North Dakota is off the table I'll move forward and support one of the other options....I'm leaning towards anything that doesn't risk portraying UND as racist white cowboys, or honor an inaccurate representation of North Dakota history, or shares its name with a condom, or will be shortened and be the same as a brand of Mom Jeans sold by Lee. Hmmm.... I guess my list is down to 4.... :-) -
Would the definition of a traveling trophy also include any information about one side unilaterally refusing to travel 70 miles?

Sorry if the facts I stated about the origin of the state flag conflict with what you claimed, and your agenda. I will try to be more sensitive to your needs in the future.

The state flag of North Dakota was chosen to honor the 1st North Dakota Infantry. They were a regiment of volunteers from and organized in North Dakota, so it made sense to honor them. The Roughriders and many other cavalry units in the country carried the same flag; it was quite popular as it is an important symbol of the U.S.A. There are enough misconceptions out there about the Roughriders and their mythic link to North Dakota; let's not insult the memory of the 1st North Dakota Infantry by claiming the state flag was chosen to honor the Roughriders.

Nice post. When there are people thinking the Great Seal of the United States of America on a flag is somehow uniquely Roughriders and uniquely North Dakota and makes a nice logo, God help us.

In regard to official- I'm haying. Look it up for yourselves.

I like it! Roll Gardners!
-
Well....no..... Not every state has several official/unofficial nicknames that would work well as a university nickname. We've already used two. Since all the choices left are rather weak, of those 7 North Dakota or nodaks are my preferred choices.

In 1957, the legislature formally adopted Peace Garden State as the official nickname. (North Dakota Century Code, Section 39-04-12.) I'm not sure how much more official you can get. It seems every time I state a fact on here about the Roughriders myth, I get accused of being wrong, only to later prove i'm right. I guess that's how fairy tale legends of Roughriders being from North Dakota get spread. Bully!

Lol how true!
-
Sorry- I guess i should have explained I was being facetious. The legislature has twice struck down efforts to make Roughriders the official state nickname- that's good enough for me.
-
North Dakota's official nickname is the Peace Garden State. I'm not sure how our "ilk" would go about officially ridding North Dakota of an unofficial, historically inaccurate nickname drummed up by the ND Dept. Of Tourism. But we're open to suggestions.

I like the other 6 better.
-
Lol. If that is what you took away from reading my post, there is no other appropriate response other than to just laugh.
-
Can't argue with that!

All 7 names will be written on a piece of tape, stuck on to a straw. All 7 straws will be carefully, shallowly inserted into the butt of a committee member of Karl Goehring's choosing. This committee member will then pull out 3 straws. These will represent the final 3.

I think it was all those luxury cruises his family took him on to Europe and Egypt when he was a child in the 1870's that toughened him up. While our ancestors were trudging across Wisconsin and Minnesota walking behind an ox and cart with nothing to their names but the clothes on their back, hoping to find a piece of ground and stake their claim, and hoping to survive their first winter in sod-based dugouts built into the riverbanks, Teddy was off cruising to Europe and Egypt on the carnival cruiselines of the 1870s.... But yep, let's name UND after him instead! SMH

Are we that hard up we have to adopt someone, and the cavalry he led from a different part of the United States, to base our nickname on? If U of Michigan had to do it all over again, would they choose Wolverines in the year 2015? We have the advantage of being able to look back at our history, and base our choice on how our state has developed, how its history has played out.

Good post. I disagree with Roughriders being the best option left, but otherwise I feel the same way about the criteria, process, and results. What you mentioned about a name like Ranchers has been part of my beef all along. If we're in love with Teddy Roosevelt, pick a nickname related to something that he did while he was in ND. Before the last committee/rube gathering where they cut the list down to 7, there were 3 "people-based" names left that at least attempted to recognize something North Dakota-related. In their infinite wisdom, the other two were eliminated, leaving Roughriders as the only option for people wanting to vote for a person-based nickname sort of remotely related to the state. And thus, the reason (I think) a lot of people are leaning towards it because all other options for a ND-based nickname have been eliminated. It's just too bad all the committee members failed North Dakota History class and have no clue about who the ND settlers were or what they did.

Did they even bother to ask the third guy if he wanted to change positions?

Brought to you by Lee Riders Mom Jeans. For when looking your best, isn't important.

Nice post. Where was I? I didn't post here then. Thanks for your efforts.
