And this is why expectation is to show up and simply beat Kansas State. First off, nothing to lose. Second off, North Dakota State and South Dakota State (where we want to get to) have shown it can consistently be done. Thirdly, the games you mention show how close the talent really is, just comes down to execution and closing and an ability to win games on the road, something previous coaching staff struggled mightily with.

Bottomline, beat Kansas State. It is the expectation. Season is by no means ruined after only 1 game if it doesn’t happen, but it should be the expectation starting off here with the Schmidt era.
Go JYDs-make a splash

Agreed, you should always play to win the game! And obviously a loss to K-State doesn't ruin the season, so long as the team plays a full 4 quarters of good football. I'd feel better about it if Schmidt was 2-3 years in and had fully installed his own guys and system but still have to give it a shot.

Bowling Green was a killer as that should have absolutely been a W. "We let them off the hook"

Utah Valley  State- Weren't we up by a bit? Lots of trick plays to score ... we ran out of gimmicks ... our D couldn't keep us in the game.

Nebraska - Good first half but couldn't play a full game.

Iowa State - Great effort but couldn't play a full game and couldn't score.

Really hope Schmidt can get the job done, but at this point its all repetitive talk. I just want to watch some football.

Utah Utes smoked us. I don't think that one was ever close. Utah State was the game where we were up. First 3 TDs were all by different QBs if I recall. It was peak Danny trickery, but it wasn't sustainable. I feel like there were some weather delays in that one too.

Utah game in 2017 was winnable believe it or not (17-9 at halftime) but second half was not good. Too many field goals for UND….. UND 2017 team went on to have horrible season with injury issues:

UND should’ve beat Utah State game in 2021 (UND was winning at halftime but fell apart in second half). UND had an awful 2021 fall season following up their conference title 2021 spring schedule …

Utah State we were up 21-7 and moving the ball again and think we had just crossed midfield into their territory.  Think it was 3rd and 1, we handed off to RB (think it was Weah) he was about to run through a big hole the OL opened up....right up the middle. However the WR coming motion from left to right was late....and RB ran right into our own WR in the backfield and we didn't convert and had to punt. It was all downhill after that play.

Seems like we always had something like that happen in one for thise FBS games that just killed the momentum and we never fully recovered.  Over throwing Bo at Nebraska.  Fumble by Schuster right before half at Boise St. etc.

Hoping going forward we are the team that starts making those big plays when needed, just like the school to our south does on a regular basis when they need to.
