Looking at commitment dates, all of these committed to the U while Raboin was there: Oliver Moore, Rinzel, Snuggerud, Chesley, Knies, Broz...whether that was Motzko or Raboin, I don't know for sure, but they certainly  had their share of blue chippers during that 2018-2022 run.

I think if Hak is interested it's still who I would want, but I would be plenty excited with either of them.

I really wanted Hak to be honest. If that is not the case then I have really warmed up to Raboin. I have no idea how realistic the chances are of that but if Hak is a no go I would like to get Raboin. Another person who I think would really move the needle would be Moorhead boy Matt Cullen.

Does Cullen have a bachelor's?  Not an option if not.  He jumped to the NHL after sophomore year at SCSU and played in the show forever.

Didn't Berry not have his when he was hired and had to take classes with players?  I'd imagine Cullen (or anyone else) would have that option as well.  Maybe depending on how close to a degree they were already.

A few people here have mentioned that Raboin was the assistant responsible for bringing in top recruits. So maybe Jax is responsible for ##### and ###### coming in next year that are huge gets. So firing Berry but keeping and promoting Jax makes sense if you want to keep those guys. That he landed. We still don’t know who he has lined up WHL wise that could be enormous as well. Just food for thought here.

I want us to do a hard reset. A reboot. Promoting from within (Jackson) or bringing back a previous coach (Hakstol) doesn't do that.

And if you want to call that stupid, go ahead. :silly:

I understand what you are saying and I agree with you. Hiring Hak or Dane is the "safe" bet that Chaves can make, but will he? This hire will make or break Chaves's time here at UND, hockey is THE sport that UND has and cannot miss on this. Will he take the safe bet and hire from within, or will he gamble and hire a younger coach that is moving through the ranks?
I will say this though, no matter what happens, I do feel that Karl's time here at UND should be done also. I'm not sure why he has gotten a pass as long as he has (lets be real, it's because he is family) as he was brought here with the hopes of developing goalies and various of other reasons.

I gotta think they probably called Hak first...but all the comments on this board make it sound like Hak is likely heading back to the NHL next year.  So who's next in line?

And you cool it with the attitude. :glare:

The NHL is way different than the NCAA. Or CHL for that matter.

Oh my, thanks for clearing that up.

Do schools really hire the assistant when the head coach is fired?  Like when does that happen and at what level?

(no UND doesn't count)

It's an outlier but LSU did it with Coach Ed Orgeron.

It happened when Rube Bjorkman left and they elevated one of his assistants (Gino).

But it doesn't usually work like that.

...and also to hire the guy who was in charge of the phase of the game that probably kept them out of the tournament -- penalty killing.

I'm still like 5 pages behind on the thread so I apologize if this has already been brought up. But they penalty kill was lights out the last 2 months of the season. Don't get me wrong, it was horrendous and the worst we've seen the worst 3-4 months. But not having Zmolek combined with having several freshmen defensemen learning the system, and also combined with missing Berg and Jammer as regular PK forwards, it was the imperfect storm. There was nearly a 180 deg turnaround and that's attributable to him getting through to young players adjusting.

I'm not saying let's make him king, but let's not be shortsighted on the personnel available this year. And all things considered, our PK has been notably good this past decade thanks to Jackson. This PK situation was an outlier.
