SiouxBoys Posted December 11 Posted December 11 The argument of letting up is an interesting one though. As a coach, you're not going to tell your players to go out there and not try to score. At some point, the other team has to put up a fight. Quote

How bout North and South combining to field a team? That is hard for me to comprehend schools of that size needing a coop. Bismarck did the right thing for growing the girls game. Sure it's not without growing pains but it was right for the growth of hockey. Quote

Bismarck would take some lumps right away but in the long run will be better for doing so Quote

Sure it's not without growing pains but it was right for the growth of hockey. I do not believe there's enough girls playing hockey in Fargo to support 3 teams. I only see 1 15U team listed. They do have 3 at the 12U level however. Talk could also be about WF having 2 teams. Numbers have to be similar to Bismarck in the youth levels - edit: actually WF only shows one small 15ua team and 2 12u. I think all of the bigger communities could do a better job of recruiting girls youth hockey players too be honest. It's going OK in Bismarck. Much better now with that 3rd sheet of ice (which was one of my personal issues) at VFW. Gotta look past the winning part of HS sports and focus on participation - which, when it comes to hockey and girls, a large % are just doing it for social/fun purposes. Numbers look huge on L/B (28 skaters 3 goalies), however at least 5 of them have played hockey less than 3 years. 2 issues I've seen personally in Bismarck: 1. It has had an affect on the youth club. Girls are jumping up when they're not ready. Personal family decision...yes. But FR who aren't ready coming up for social reasons, barely touch the ice and don't develop properly like FR boys in bantams. 2. More girls have actually quit the last 2 years with 2 teams than ever had with one team. I believe CHS had 3 just this season. That rarely happened with the Blizzard. All that said. Growth is good. The sport in ND is as talented and deep as it has ever been. I don't believe girls need to leave the state to reach their dreams if that's what they want, and I believe colleges are missing out by not scouting talented, hard working kids in ND. 1 Quote

But there are other things that a coach can do, such as giving most of the ice time to his second, third, and fourth (if he has one) lines after the game has, for all intents and purposes, been decided. That gives his third and fourth (if he has one) lines some extra PT, perhaps saves the opponent from feeling that they were mercilessly (and needlessly) pounded into the ground, and preserves the coach's reputation. Devils Lake was only beaten 5-0 by both West Fargo and Grand Forks, so, on the surface at least, 18-0 looks like a needless beatdown. 1 Quote

I'm willing to bet coach Metz did all of those things. He's always been a class act. The problem comes when N/S's 4th line is that much better than DL's 1st line. I just know as a coach you never want to tell your players to "stop scoring". Easiest way to develop bad habits. Quote
Brim006 Posted December 12 Posted December 12 Same argument goes for South/Shanley/Oak Grove on the boys side. I'm constantly told they don't have enough kids, yet their roster shows they have 43 this year lol. Not to mention another 20+ on the Junior gold team which probably equates to at least another handful that opted out due to knowing they wouldnt play varsity. I fully understand there's more to it than that, but it seems egregious when about 1/3 of their peers around the state make it work with those numbers. 1 Quote
