Haven’t put hardly any thought into this, so just spitballing here.  With neutral conference tournaments dying and moving to home sites, and NCAA regionals typically very poorly attended, what if we skipped all that and gave the 6 conference regular season champs a birth into the “frozen 6”?  The teams would be seeded 1-6 based on some sort of pairwise and the 4/5 and 3/6 winners (played on Wednesday?) play the 1 and 2 seeds in Thursday semifinals, then the championship on Saturday.

Wasn’t this how it was back in the day with only 4 teams making it?

I think there was a very early version of the NCAA hockey tournament that was only 4 teams, yes. Not sure how they were decided.

Maine looks awful

even before I came back here to catch up on posts I was thinking, ‘geez Maine is playing more like UND, with the blind pass D zone turnover that led to a goal and some undisciplined penalties’, so I really chuckled when I read these comments which look like they belong in a UND game thread. :D

I don’t know if Guy Gadowsky is a real good coach or a good guy but one thing I’ve respected about Penn St since they went D1,he has them bringing their lunch boxes and putting in the effort.  They haven’t always had the skill but they’ve never lacked work ethic.

I wonder why, if they are going to be off campus, they do four regionals. What if they did two? They could each have games Thursday (2), Friday (2), Saturday (1) and Sunday (1). Rather than people going to Sioux Falls for two games Thursday and one Sunday.

I guess from the CHN Insiders podcast that the coaches like the day off between games.

I think Maine should have challenged for a 5 min major contact to the head. What do they have to lose?

They did challenge for offsides on one of Penn State’s goals.  It looked like a better challenge would have been for goalie interference on that goal.

Thats what I thought they should have challenged for, both were close

Looks like this would still involve a day off, just combining two regionals into one.

I had an idea for a 2 site “super regional” a couple years ago. Basically you have two 8-team regionals in “hockey cities” like Boston, Detroit, St. Paul, and Denver (rotate year to year) to whittle down to your Frozen Four. Then the Frozen Four would alternate between warm weather cities like Tampa and Las Vegas.

So if they challenged both, and both were wrong, they would have lost their timeout and get a penalty, correct?  If you challenge both I wonder if the refs look at it like you are throwing something at the wall hoping to make it stick, which may work to their disadvantage.

Probably two different challenges, which would be a penalty. I wish the NCAA would just be like the NHL, bad challenge you get a penalty.

What I'd like is a War Room that is reviewing goals automatically in the NCAA

Either:

-Top four teams host regionals.

-Two weekends of best of three then frozen four.  1 v 16, 8 v 9, etc.  First weekend is the regional, second weekend is the super regional.  Higher seed hosts.  Super regional during basketball final four.

Or we just continue to play the most important games of the season on $hit ice....makes sense.
