MEN'S HOCKEY: Horse play

Canady, Fabian and Massen line provides big spark for Sioux

By Virg Foss

"Outlined against a blue-gray March sky the Three Horsemen skated again. In dramatic lore they are known as Pain, Destruction and Death. They are only aliases. Their real names are: Massen, Fabian and Canady." ...

Good grief, Virg.  What's next, comparing Jordan Parise to the Great Wall of China?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Would anyone pay to see the "Ultimate Homer-thon Bout" - Sid and Virg in a boxing match? Or maybe have the Ultimate Homer deadpool?

I am glad Virg doesn't make up stuff like Grandpa Sid does.  I get a kick whenever I read the Tribune and see how Gramps is friends with everyone who is "high up".

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Nah, Virg just gets his "information" from here, USCHO, The Onion and when he "channels" Socrates. :D:lol:

On a related note, hopefully these Three play up to their billing the next few weeks.

is it just me, or is there something to NOT be said about these two 4 yr 4th liners?? I know that they are role players, but you would think that in a four year career, that they would have at least been placed on a line with a goal scorer to go into the corners and get the puck for said scorer. i guess i have always been of the mindset that you stick young guys on the fourth line and make them go out, earn their stripes by mucking and grinding, and then move them up the ranks as their abilities get better. not too many people can step into the league as well as a zach or even zajac and sparky. i might be wrong, but damn b, these seniors should have at least established themselves on even the third line

I won't take shots at the players because they are, by all accounts, playing hard. I can't hold it against them that they did not become the players that some expected.

Virg is another matter. That's the best he could do, the Three Horsemen?

True jk, but rational thought doesn't matter. When there are bad seasons, a lot of the fans think it's ok to bash certain players on "their" team and call it "criticism."

Let them have their fun.

I remember when the "chump of the week" was Jordan Parise. Can't pick on him because he's doing well. So, evidentally the new "chumps" are Fabian, Massen, and Canady. C'est le vie.

I can't believe any of you are qualified to make fun of any of these players. How many of you (I am talking to the people being critical of players) ever played hockey and how many of you ever played a division 1 sport or for that matter sports after High school (not counting intramural). Every team has a 4th and 5th line, a couple back up goalies and a 7th and 8th defensemen. These are the guys that could cause internal problems or friction in the lockerrooms. These are the more dedicated players for going to every practice working hard and not getting to play much. I would rather be on the Sioux 5th line then another teams 3rd line.

it's not just about being on the fourth line so much as it is starting out there as a freshman, not playing too often to being a senior and still in the same damn predicament. in four years of college hockey, not developing the way most do to a different role than when you showed up.

That is the problem. These guys have been getting alot of playing time. I like Fabian because he actually makes a play once in a awhile. Massen and Canady are stiffs and have been for four years. You could take any two forwards from Red River or Central this year and simply by chance they could probably match the point totals of those two. Guys like Prpich have not produced either but at least Prpich makes up for it with his high energy and penalty killing (something that neither Canady or Massen brings to the table).

Perhaps this was more of a critique of Virg than the players, but I think it's realistic to say that these guys have been underachievers and simply pointing that out in any way doesn't make me less of a fan anymore than being blind to the team's faults makes a person a better "fan" for never saying anything but Candyland drivel that everything is nice and sugary here.

But in order to be cheerleader of the board for awhile let me say I wish Brady Murray was fully healthy cause he's wicked good.

Massen has underproduced only the last 2 years. I find it hard to believe you'd rip him for his sophomore season. Canady is the same player he was when he got here, I agree with you there.

Prpich's got 7 goals so far this year. For a checking line forward, that doesn't seem so bad to me. I'll take it.

If you look at the Sioux teams since 1997, how many guys have went from the 4th line, to the 1st line. There may have been a few. Guys are brought in for their specific purpose.Guys like Canady, Prpich, Fylling and Kaip will always be on third or fourth line. In the past there was guys like Armburst, Dafauw, Bull even Spiewak and Noterman (although they scored some) were more your role players, penalty killers. But them guys are never going to be skilled guys you want on the ice when you pull the goalie or guys you want on your power play.

It seems like the Gophers had the same 4th line for four years (Jon Wibbel? Fleming and smaagard). Masson was brought in as a goal scorer, but now he has a different role and he is doing it well.

You have to remember evr guy on the Sioux, Gophers, Badgers or other top teams was one of the best players on their junior, high school or midget team.

What is Massen's role? He does not score, he does not play on special teams (pk or pp), he is not a bruiser even though he probably should be given his size, and he is not the guy that we depend on to win that critical draw late in the game. What else is there? In my opinion, one example of a guy that evolved is Rory McMahon, he started out on the lower lines as a defensive specialist. He is still that great defensive forward but when called on earlier in the year, he put some points on the board. I appreciate your point that some players are role players but some players are not pulling their weight in my opinion.

Regarding the Gophers 4th line of Waibel, Fleming, and Smaagard, I can't stand the Gophers but that was an awesome 4th line that probably would be the second best line on this current Sioux team.

We could be next season's Matt Henderson. I think Prpich could score 15-20 goals.

Every one of you call yourself Sioux fans, huh? I know this is my first post here at Sioux Sports but give me a friggin break...you're a bunch of pricks to think that Fabian, Massen, and Canady don't go out game in and game out skating their A$$e$ off! If there is line in the WCHA that hasn't WORKED harder, prove it to me. Yeah they may not produce numbers wise, but when you control play and not allow any goals, that is far better than having a negative +/- rating. We have Goal-Scorers, Playmakers, Hustlers, Bruisers, these guys are Hardworkers and ripping them doesn't show any faith for what these guys have done!!! Good things happen to those that work hard and look at Fabian and Canady, Each have scored just as much as Drew and Brady in the last 6 games!!

Fight the Good Fight ladies and Gentlemen....just don't rip on guys that produce defensive hockey. If we wanna rip on anyone lets look at the entire season up to the last two series for Smaby and Schneider...disappointing.....but lately lookin real Good!!!
