Who would UND hire?

The report says South Dakota State spends $8.8 million a year on football. North Dakota State is next at $6.41 million and the rest of the league goes as follows in millions: North Dakota $6.02, Missouri State $5.24, Southern Illinois $5.21, Illinois State $4.8, Youngstown State $4.71, South Dakota $4.45, Murray State $4.03 and Northern Iowa $3.8.

If UND is spending 6 million plus on football, there's no reason for mediocrity. There's more than enough money to support a successful program. I also heard rumblings that some of the big alumni might be getting ready to call for a change. If UND loses this weekend, I wonder if Bubba's seat gets hotter.

I agree with all of this. What is incredibly frustrating is that it is unacceptable that “big alumni” are just getting ready for a change now. Should have been communicated years ago (2017 or 2021).

Hopefully, they will push, and this isn't just talk. Some changes need to be made. I personally, like Bubba, he's a decent human being, but we're stuck in a rut.

Absolutely, this is no indictment on his character as an individual at all, but, division 1 football is a results-driven business. UND is not competing with regional rivals and putting up the results necessary to compete; it’s clearly time for major change.

That's why I advocate going straight to the top.

Get a good coach and double their current salary and/or UNDs football coaches.

No pussyfooting around with hoping "this guy" will be good.

"We don't have money to go FCS"....yet they always find a way.

"NDSU doesn't have FBS money to pay a coach".....yet they'd find a way.

UND can find a way to bring in the highest paid FCS coach if they really wanted too...

Over 6 million UND football budget....double the coaches salary and it's only adds $250,000.

Seems doable to me.

Agree with everyone's take on this.

And honestly...does Saturday even matter?  Kinda feels like the damage has been done...

It shouldn't.  I hope they win for the sake of the seniors, and all players, and really, even Bubba.  But Bubba shouldn't be coaching for his job this Saturday. He should be coaching the last game of his career regardless.

Would be nice to get a road W and send the seniors off on a high note. Whatever happens after that is what it is.

If you listen to the 360 guys you'll hear Kelly say that it's nice UND has a high GPA and lots of Community Service hours "but I want to win."

I share his feelings on this, but I must point out again that you need not sacrifice good GPA numbers and Community Service hours for wins. And vice-versa.

Is that your opinion or do you have factual comparisons?  Is the high GPA compared to... evert student at UND? Every student everywhere? Or to football programs we cherry picked to support the narrative...  modern society has fed my cynical nature well lately.

A lot of the same habits that make someone a successful athlete also carry over to academics (work ethic, discipline, attitude, commitment, fighting through adversity, time management). With a few regrettable exceptions, our student-athletes have generally done well in the classroom over the years (Karl Goehring is one example). And I don't see why that ever has to change.

A common perception, and probably correct but for the people from Missouri, hard info is king.

Look at all the athletes we have named to academic all-conference teams, in multiple sports on a regular basis. That is "hard data", is it not?

That’s about the only accomplishment our athletic department has - academics

from same article.

https://fightinghawks.com/news/2024/1/25/general-fighting-hawks-shine-in-classroom-during-fall-2023-semester.aspx

Overall, the student-athletes combined for a 3.391 departmental GPA, making it 31 straight semesters above the 3.0 mark as a department. 300 of them – a monster 81 percent – earned at least a 3.0 and an impressive 95 collecting a perfect 4.0 mark for the semester. Of those 95 perfect scores during the semester, a whopping 63 student-athletes maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.0 during their academic careers. In addition, 89 Fighting Hawks earned a selection to the Dean's List while 51 were named to the President's Honor Roll.

Good work, how does that compare to the competing universities?
