My issue with the play-calling at the end of regulation is that they didn't even get a shot off! They had 24 secs on shot clock I believe (?) to setup the play. The problem is they went straight to Hooker, who is was in jail the entire game. He was locked down by those Irvine guards for 90% of the time, it was pretty impressive. Why would Hooker suddenly get himself free and beat them off the dribble now with the game on the line? Sure enough, he got locked up, had to pass and nobody else was ready or willing. Shot clock violation on the last possession to win the game. That literally NEVER happens. Not even a shot? Geno was embarrassing their guards all game and is a Top 4 guard in the league at home. Why would they not let him do what he did all game and beat his guy off the dribble, maybe get fouled on the way in, or drop a floater in the lane or dish to open guy on baseline after help came over? He got escorted off the floor once by two security guards and was allowed to return, and then he was removed completely just before the end of regulation. Besides being overzealous and obnoxious, what did he do to get removed? He kept yelling......."GO HAWKS'! (I kid...I kid) Quote

dmksioux Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Fun game to watch and UND played well, including Shanks...for the most part. Not sure what happened to Avants as I don't recall seeing him in the second half? UND shot well from the outside and UC Irvine definitely had the height, but we held our own in the paint. If Shanks can develop an offensive game similar to their #32 (Best) UND will be very good. That kid (#32) had a nice shot. As for the Anteater fan, I knew the usher who was working that corner of the gym. According to her, the fan was "on the court" meaning he had walked on to the carpet strip behind the basket and was also jawing with other fans. They removed him the first time for being on the court. They removed him again, although she said he was allowed to watch from a different area, because during one of his pacing episodes, he ran into a little girl. Apparently he was telling a few people he played for the Clippers also. That guy was just a bit off... Quote

Teeder11 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Someone mentioned it but that sure was hilarious when Avants managed to win the tip against their 7-6 big man. In fact, I think UND came away with both tips, but had to steal the ball to do it at the beginning of OT. Quote
Oxbow6 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Sounds like the UCI HC didn't appreciate the hip check by Shanks on his 7'6" big man that resulted in in knee injury that limited him to 8 minutes of PT. Quote

If you can't hang with the big dogs, stay on the porch. Seriously though, I didn't see what caused him to go down, does he have a legitimate complaint? Quote
UND1983 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 It wasn't a hip check. Shanks met him in the lane and he rolled his ankle after they hit. It was about as harmless as it gets. Quote

I don't think the plan was for Q to take the shot but no one got open. Possibly hoping for him to get doubled since that was where everyone thought the shot was coming from but it never came and UCI played great defense. From sitting near the bench, the reaction seemed to be that whatever play was called did not get run the way it was supposed to and obviously didn't have the results it should have. 3 minutes ago, Oxbow6 said: Sounds like the UCI HC didn't appreciate the hip check by Shanks on his 7'6" big man that resulted in in knee injury that limited him to 8 minutes of PT. Did he seriously comment on that? Their guy ran into Shanks, who is by no stretch of the imagination a brick wall, and fell down and laid there. He didn't look all that interested in playing before or after that so I'm not so sure how injured he was. Quote
UND1983 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Quote from Jones: "You can’t control whether the ball goes in but you can control the quality of looks you get.” Or don't get. It was a fun, fun game to watch. But, not being able to finish in tight games has been going on for how long now? At home, on the road, neutral site...doesn't matter. Maddening. 2 Quote

On that possession, I agree, you need to get a shot off. I'll give credit for not doing what they had been doing which is Q holding the ball at the top of the key until 10-12 seconds left on the shot clock and driving, but you still need to get someone open and get it off. However he's right on in regards to McDermott's three pointer with just under a minute to go in regulation, Hooker's missed three with 40 seconds to go in OT and Geno's look at the end of the game. Those were all good looks that didn't go. Quote

UNDvince97-01 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Only thing missing from this program now is a good in-game manager and coach that teaches solid fundamentals and gets the most out of his players - makes them overachieve. These tight, end of the game results are always the same. Always have been. I am excited about the talent of this team next year. Just need someone to get the most out of it. 4 Quote
homer Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 The end of regulation shot clock rundown is a tough one for me. It was out of a timeout so you'd like to see something better earlier in the clock. I don't know what was said to Hooker. I think back to the Weber game and being upset cause we didn't put the ball in Hookers hands, now this game the ball gets in Hooker's hands and being upset because he didn't get a good look or go early enough. I don't think anybody who actually watched the Weber game was upset Q didn't get the ball. He had two guys draped all over him intentionally, which surprised the hell out of UND. You go with the hot hand to win the game, IMO. It can change game to game but it is usually the same 2-3 guys. This game it was definitely Geno AT HOME. He was spectacular on the drive last night. Shanks gave him a high school bump and he fell like a ton of bricks. Certainly not a cheap play by Shanks. Quote

Baldwin is a nice player but I'd like to see him off the bench. Don't disagree. If you started the guys with the most talent/potential/ability I'd go Hooker, Baker, Crandall, Seales, Drick. Doesn't really matter who starts, should be a lot of talent all around. Expectation should be at minimum top 4 finish, pushing 20 wins, and postseason. Goal should be regular season title (guaranteed NIT), 20 plus wins, NCAA tourney. Quote
