The Sicatoka Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 Lines? Getter, Setter, Shooter. Getter: The guy who "gets" the puck either through speed (out-racing to the puck) or owning the boards, this person gets it to ... Setter: The creative one on the line, the guy who knows where his teammates are and sets the up while still creating his own chances. Shooter: The guy who seems to be open in the scoring space wherever that may be, and has the shot to make it happen. Getter. Setter. Shooter. Quote

I agree with those being key roles, but I don't believe that your lines need to be built around specialists in each role. For example, it is best when players can play all of those roles or at least more than one. Depending on where the puck is on the ice, positional play will dictate your responsibility in terms of "getting" along the boards or positioning yourself in a soft spot to prepare to be a shooter, or seeing your teammates who might have a better look at the net. Every forward on a scoring line needs to be able to do all 3 roles reasonably well. If you are talking special teams, I can agree a little more with defined accountability once set up. On the forecheck, two forwards should almost always be collaboratively "getting" and "setting" Quote

Wilbur Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 I've thrown a few combos out there...top 6 bottom 6 is more of an NHL approach to hockey- yeah, I've heard it used in other leagues, but it is definitively more relevant to the NHL. I would contend that we might have a top 9 and bottom 3 this year. If there isn't much of a drop-off in offensive creativity between the second and third lines, then you have a top 9. I also think that Rocco is creative enough to build a line around him- if in straight God-given hockey offensive ability if he is 2nd on the team after Kristo or maybe even first, then build a line around him. Put them on separate lines in order to make guys like O'Donnell and Rowney and Parks and MacMillan better. As for special teams, we've had Danny on point for the last 3 years- I really hope Bubba changes that. I'd like to see Knight, Rocco, Danny, Schmaltz and Mattson as our #1 PP Hhhhyeah.....What a unit that would be. You could even throw different looks in like Rowney for Schmaltz to have a body with good hands in front of the net. Or add in Rodwell as your net front presence. I remember that Grimaldi saw a little bit of action on the point last year. That adds another interesting wrinkle. Quote
yzerman19 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Knight is money on the draw which is huge, then he rolls in front of the net...Danny and Rocco can create and use their points with sick offensive defensemen...it would be nice to make a living on the PP...Gophs used to do that very well with Leopold then Martin then Ballard then Gologoski... For my money Keith Ballard probably had the best one timer from the point that I've ever seen in college hockey. You knew it was coming, but teams still couldn't prevent him from finding space on the point and letting his howitzer go. I think you bring up a great point with the fact that the gophers consistently had good QBs of their powerplays which equalled great success for their powerplays. Thats one thing I think UND has kind of been missing a bit. I guess you could argue Frattin and Genoway a couple years ago, but it'd be nice to see someone step up this year and have the powerplay get up to the 25% conversion area. Although last year I think UND finished ranked 11th in the country at near 22%, can't complain about that with the cards that team was dealt. Quote
yzerman19 Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Ballard was great and a class act- same with Martin. It would be great to have blue liners like the Gophs had there for awhile...Before Leopold it was Crowley...I mean, they had GREAT PP dmen lined up deep Quote

Wilbur Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 So my kids asked me when they get to go get autographs at the meet the Sioux event. anyone know when that is this year and what its called Do not believe one has been announced. But normally around the beginning to middle of September they'll come out with a press release. When I was in college in Grand Forks I always enjoyed watching the team scrimmage to see some of the new players, and how the kids around the rink were just in awe during the autograph session. Quote

yzerman19 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Mattson- yes, Schmaltz- yes, but I thought Forbert and Simpson might be too, and they are not. Interestingly, Crowley had the best numbers in college and the shortest NHL career... Quote
Emerald joker Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I dont know how to quote someone off an article but im sure a few people have read that Hakstol said that Macmillian and O'donnel had natural chemistry together and he possibly wants to keep them together for the upcoming season so that should help us figure out what lines might be. I might go with Grimaldi being on that top line and having O'donnel, Macmillian and Parks on the second line and have Rowney center the 3rd line which is not an insult to him. The Rowney line can be a scoring or a checking line. Quote
Wilbur Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 I don't think that Dillon Simpson has had a bad career, but I had a bit higher expectations for the kid as far as running the powerplay and having more offensive output. Only two powerplay goals so far....It'd be nice to see him get to around the 30 point mark this season. I think its possible. Quote
AZSIOUX Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 I see dillon around the 30 point mark this season while he and schmaltz move that puck and fire away on the PP. love to see those 2 out along with kristo Grimaldi and knight while on the man advantage! yzerman19 Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Simpson came in as an underager like Toewser...immediately you have high expectations. I agree his career has not been bad, and it is nowhere near over...he is the same birth year as Jordan Schmaltz... as for the O'Donnell MacMillan line combo- I guess you could do O'Donnell, MacMillan and Parks although I don't think any of them played center last year...you could do this: Knight with Kristo and Caggiula Grimaldi with O'Donnell and MacMIllan Rowney with Parks and Chyzyk St Clair with Rodwell and Pattyn That would also have some balanced scoring...assuming Caggiula has the tools that you expect of an 18 year old freshman and assuming Chyzyk's USHL performance translates to a Parks type player... I also think of making Gleason a forward...having he and Rodwell on the energy line would kill the opponents with their speed Quote

I could support that Quote

I know he was like 17 when he came to UND and still could have actually been a Senior in High School... He is relatively young for a college hockey player. Quote
