Fetch
http://www.kfyrtv.com/News_Stories.asp?news=37669 I was at the Prairie Knights Casino this past Saturday - 1st time - early afternoon (really drove out of my way to check it out) - I had on my Fighting Sioux Coat & Hat & wondered if I'd get any comments - didn't get any, but many were checking me out. I sure hope they are sincere about honoring the Name their past leaders allowed us to use - as much as we try to honor it Thanks to those trying to move this on to a positive conclusion
Blackburn87
That is a positive story and something that has been mentioned before. Let's hope the momentum keeps moving in the right direction (finally)!
darell1976
So if you are the SBoHE do you change the name immediately with a petition and possible vote (plus a 1969 ceremony) going on, or ignore them and change the name to get into the Summit? MplsBison
So if you are the SBoHE do you change the name immediately with a petition and possible vote (plus a 1969 ceremony) going on, or ignore them and change the name to get into the Summit? Summit is more important. It's just a nickname. Unless SR leaders come out before the next SBoHE meeting, urgently requesting an extension, I change the nickname then and there. Blackburn87
If the SBoHE thought there was blowback when they tried to rush a name change, imagine the backlash if they try to do it when members of Standing Rock are attempting to move this issue forward. If they do so, it will prove the hypocrisy they've actually held all along: That they (the SBoHE) were never truly interested in what any of the Native American tribes had to say, much less what the alums and fans of UND thought about this. Common sense must prevail. Other posters to the various Sioux Name threads have noted that the leadership in Indian Country would move on their timetable, not ours. The current tribal leadership has said as much. Well, there is movement. It may go nowhere; it may lead to a definitive vote. To not let it play out its natural course is insulting to all parties involved. I know I'll get some heat for saying this, but the Summit League can wait. This is an issue with a deadline guaranteeing resolution.
Fetch
Hey Mpls go climb the summit & JUMP
Knickball2
What have I been saying all along, Standing Rock will act on their own time, not SBoHE, sorry MinneapoliBison, but there will be a vote, Summit or no Summit. The members of SBoHE do not want the heat for changing, when we all know all of our politicians, lawyers and doctors are graduates of UND Fighting Sioux, that equates to donors as well. So just cool your rhetoric...
darell1976
I think if they (SBoHE) know a vote will be coming they will let that go through. I think what they should be doing in the mean time is get the SL and SR on board for a 20 or 30 year or indifinate contract for use of the name. If the SR use the 1969 pipe ceremony since that can't be undone then technically UND has the blessing of the SR indifinately.

Chewey
So is Tool. Yeah, "it's just a nickname" so why is every hypersensitive, PC dolt making a big deal about being "offended" by it. There's decades of history behind it, etc.

No. Nothing of significance happens to alter the lives of everyday UND athletics fans.
dmksioux
If it changes, what happens? Do people die? Do people lose their jobs? No. Nothing of significance happens to alter the lives of everyday UND athletics fans. What happens if it stays the same? Do people die? Do people lose their jobs? No. I do appreciate hearing other peoples points of view on this discussion board. I just don't understand why you are so adamant about stirring things up. Every Sioux fan has an opinion and no matter what you say, you're not going to change peoples minds. Some are for the name, some feel it's time to move on. Granted we need to find an autobid conference and I trust that the leaders of UND will do what's right to make sure that happens. I want to keep the Sioux name just as badly as anyone else, however I can accept the fact that we may need to make the change in order to benefit the UND Athletic department and the student athletes. I do not need to get on this board and constantly argue why everyone else is wrong...perhaps you should do the same.

If it changes now, it means the issue is resolved now and UND gets into the Summit immediately. If it changes later or it stays the same, it means the issue will not be resolved until Nov and UND could very well miss out on its only chance to be in an auto-bid conference for bball and olympic sports. But as we all know, no one on this board gives a crap about those athletes.

I trust that they have an idea of what's at stake and will make the appropriate decisions. As I mentioned you aren't going to change anyones mind. The majority of Sioux fans want whats best for the athletes and the University as a whole regardless of what our nickname is. Most fans don't come to this site to constantly remind others whats at stake and try to get them to change their minds. Again, everyone knows what's at stake...so why do you constantly have to come in and stir the pot? We pay the administrators to make the decisions that are best for UND and those folks are not on this board looking for ideas or trying to find out how Sioux fans feel about the issue. All your doing is being confrontational and looking for an arguement. But whatever makes you feel better about yourself I guess...

I've attended many basketball games at NDSU (as well as when NDSU was down at the Metrodome for a little thing called "March Madness", you should look it up). That is yet another asinine comment by you on this subject. There are many, MANY Sioux fans that are fans of all Sioux athletic teams. It's not so black and white as "hockey and football against all other sports". Considering there are approximately 4760 members of siouxsports.com, and that not all of them are even UND fans, yeah, the majority aren't on this board. Basketball is a revenue sport. I said non-revenue. The phrase "non-revenue or Olympic" in a collegiate sporting context infers not football, not basketball, and in select cases not hockey. So, in that context, when and which? I'll help you recall by mentioning all of them. Olympic or non-revenue at NDSU: Men - baseball, track, cross-country, golf, wrestling Women - soccer, softball, volleyball, golf, track, cross-country (Revenue: football, MBB, WBB) Olympic or non-revenue at UND: Men - baseball, track, cross-country, golf, swimming and diving Women - soccer, softball, volleyball, golf, track, cross-country, tennis, swimming and diving (Revenue: football, MBB, WBB, MHockey, WHockey <-- hold comments please, I know)

I have faith in the ability of man to adapt and improve his ways given proper guidance and opportunity. Of course in that statement is the tacit assumption that we're not dealing with one of the 1000 monkeys at 1000 keyboards attempting to write a Shakespearean drama. Then we prevent the SR to voice their opinion, we give the SBoHE permission to do as they wish to our schools, what if they think UND should change their colors from Green, White, and Pink, to Maroon and Gold? What stops them? Changing the name is NOT a guarantee!!! But waiting until Nov. 30, 2010 the nickname issue will ultimately be resolved one way or the other and that IS a guarantee.
