University of North Dakota Hockey 2017-18 Season

I got the impression that you believed the powerplay was the problem. Their penalty kill looked so good for the first couple months, then completely fell apart. -

In their 2015-16 national championship season, UND had a PP percentage of 19.1%. Maybe the eye test doesn't look good, but statistically they have a better PP this year. -

AM I THE ONLY ONE WITH THE CHN APP AND A CALCULATOR KNOWS BASIC ARITHMETIC AROUND HERE?! -
St Cloud won't know what hit em... by the end of the game they'll be so confused they'll be scoring goals for us!
-
Seeing as how we're 3 pts ahead of the teams behind us and 3 + 4 = 7 7 > 6 most points a team can earn in a weekend My findings conclude that we would indeed get home ice with 4 pts... you're welcome
-
My seats too and I'd gladly trade them for the students chirp the opposing goalie 2/3 of every home game. Plus that means we get moved to center ice seats!

This is so far from the truth it actually made me laugh.

Yeah he was, but I was referring more to their ability to be physical and use their body when needed despite their smaller stature. Dunc could go in the corners and hold his own, Guch hasn't figured it out quite yet. Nothing to do with who they played with because of course Dunc benefited from Oshie and Toews in scoring.
-
Yeah, he has potential for sure but can get rubbed off the puck at times where Dunc figured out how to be a little pitbull. My size comment was more about I think Weatherby can contribute more quickly than Kawaguchi because of his size. Park him in front of the net and create havoc for goalies.
-
Sort of different players/species Kawaguchi 5'9 185 lbs Weatherby 6'4 216lbs
-
Similar numbers to Wade Murphy... just being cautious
-
Weatherby as a BCHL MVP finalist has me really looking forward to what he brings to the program.

While in theory I like the idea, I worry what it might do to the ice for the men's game. In basketball that model worked really well for UND at one time. However, I think that could make the ice choppier once the men's game started. Especially if it's done back to back nights.

Far too early, but what the hell...Bracketology

Most likely is that they stay at #14 with a split. https://collegehockeyranked.com/forecast/pwrchart/north-dakota/oneweek/ Even if they sweep SCSU somehow it looks like they'd be #11 or #12. In any scenario, I'd think they still have to get to the X or their season is likely over. It's setting up a lot like 2014....fingers crossed -

If they folded, you'd have to think the rest of women's college hockey wouldn't be too far behind.
-
So averaging $5500 per game over 20 home games. At an average of $6/ticket(GA tix are $4, Reserved are $8), they sold on average about 900 tickets a game. That's interesting to hear.

It would be really weird if we don't get that extra weekend in March. Last time that happened I was a freshman in high school! However, I remember thinking the same thing last year so just gotta have faith

I think that's a cop out though. Plenty of programs had less success than ours. The major difference seems to be that they weren't given blank checks with no long term sustainable plan for the program. In some ways I think Title IX worked against our women's program. A more realistic plan would have been to play in a smaller rink in town with reduced expenses for equipment, travel, COACHING SALARY, etc. Then when(or if) you grow the program where it's popular enough to minimize the loss or at a bare minimum break even to offset the men's team's net income(I believe $300k last year?), then you can look at moving back into The Ralph. Title IX would never allow this to happen due to the requirements to have similar facilities, equipment etc between men and women but I bet if the option were given to every single one of those women, they would take it in a heartbeat over not having a program. Again, I can see why the players are mad and feel like the rug was pulled out from under them(and rightfully so) but I think there were many people in this chain of events that could have prevented this by taking a step back and using some common sense. And like I said, maybe the combination of Title IX and our amazing arena and the operating expenses that come with it put the women's program in a no-win situation and they were doomed from the beginning.

Good questions Blackheart, was our women's team so much worse off revenue-wise than other women teams in the country? Or was it more poorly managed? I think it was mainly the expense end of the Income stmt that did them in. Probably should have managed that deficit more actively and honestly that falls on coaches, ADs, etc not the players. They had to see that a $2M deficit/yr is unsustainable. The short sightedness is astounding. The players have a right to be angry but a lot of it should be at their coaches, AD, and others looking at the budget every year. Just my .02

In 'Committed Recruits' news, Jasper Weatherby is a finalist for the MVP of the BCHL... which is nice
