I have no hate. Again, read the comments. They are going through the grief stages and are currently at bargaining. Where is the criticism in that? The criticism I do have is for those who hold any nickname in a higher regard than the University which includes those who would be fine with the school being under sanctions (real or perceived) just so they could have their nickname.
-
How is pointing out that they are in the Bargaining stage criticism?
-
Wait, I thought it was only about including North Dakota as an option and had nothing to do with Fighting Sioux?
-
Go read the comments for yourself. It's painfully obvious.
-
Reading some of the comments on the Herald's website, it is looking like the Fighting Sioux Forever crowd has moved into the bargaining stage of their grief. Seems to be a pretty straight line in the transition from University of Fighting Sioux >>>> University of North Dakota North Dakota >>>> University of North Dakota NoDaks. Assuming that they will slowly move into the Depression and then Acceptance stage after the vote.

Part A - You approve of selling false hope? Setting unattainable goals in an unrealistic time frame based on a couple pie in the sky ideas seems rather reckless. In turn, those ideas will be sold to donors and faculty they are trying to recruit, promising them something that at this point, isn't going to happen. Will it make NDSU better in the long run? Maybe? But will it make them any better than they would have been with an attainable goal? Probably not. Part B - It's amusing because now everyone gets to see the delusion. -
You failed to answer what criteria was met by the Fighting Sioux nickname in order for you to proclaim that it "fulfilled its purpose like non other in the history of teams and the names used to identify them"? Simple question to a strong assertion.
-
Just to be clear, what exactly is that purpose that it fulfilled better than all other nicknames? Can you point to me games and championships that were won because of a now retired nickname? Which losses over the past couple years were because the teams no longer had the Fighting Sioux logo on the front of their jerseys? Pride is one thing but the deity status that some people continue to put on an inanimate object are frankly unbelievable.

So NDSU wasn't striving to be better before? I'm confused how putting out a goal that by all means seems completely unattainable is the only way they can improve? -
People in the '40s just weren't prepared to handle the alliteration and how well it rolls off the tongue. University of North Dakota NoDaks.....

Weber doesn't have the passing offense to give UND fits. Outside of one game where they couldn't do anything, UND's offense has shown the ability to run the ball on anyone. UND wins the game by two scores or more.

What's the general consensus on campus from students? Any guess on how many will take the time to vote?
-
If you are going to complain about that you should probably look at the committee since they are the ones who eliminated it, seems like that would make more sense.
-
Not to mention the majority of them are completely unaware that the settlement agreement was signed October 26, 2007 which happens to be a full 8 months before Kelley became president on July 1, 2008.

There was also a group of Native American students also filed a lawsuit against UND requesting the University to discontinue the use of the Fighting Sioux name not to mention countless protests and complaints. There was by no means universal support for the Spirit Lake lawsuit (which should be noted was filed without standing and immediately thrown out). I get the strong connection and support for the Fighting Sioux nickname (I'd guess it would be almost unanimous around here, myself included), however it is apparent that you and others aren't going to let it go even though it was obvious long ago that the best thing for the overall health and future of the University of North Dakota was to move on while respectfully honoring the past. Maybe you don't care about the University outside of what the athletic teams are called and wear on their jerseys but there are many stakeholders that do and can see the much bigger picture, which doesn't include a nickname that continues to draw incredibly scrutiny, negative media attention and waste resources that should be spent on furthering the goals of the University, not a battle that was lost long, long ago.

The staff also obviously thought more talent was needed at position by looking at the recruiting and who they were looking at for transfers/JuCo's. They also had a full off-season to evaluate workouts and abilities.

Welcome to the board!! Thanks for the valuable insight.

I haven't heard UND threatening to shut down any child care facilities so it clearly can't be that bad.
-
To be expected with what UND has returning for production but I'll take them finishing much better than that with zero hesitation. Q is a conference POY candidate. Baldwin and especially Bernstine seem ready to step in and fill the points that graduated/left. Shanks and Cashman have another year under their belt and will give UND a very solid inside presence. If Geno is anything near as advertised, this team could make some noise. Not sure who is or isn't redshirting but guessing Seales plays right away. I don't think it can be stated enough how huge the overseas trip was for this team, giving them a huge advantage working in the new parts before the season started. Roles are defined and players have bought in. The team chemistry will be very much improved and noticeable. That alone will make a huge difference. This team is going to be fun to watch. Duckies and bunnies until proven otherwise.

That sounds equally as terrible. -
How do you figure, the schools granted the Executive Committee (or whatever it is called now) unilateral authority to make decisions. No more full membership votes needed. And how did that lawsuit that the Spirit Lake Sioux turn out?
-
To add on to that, while he's head of Sports Information, Ryan Powell is actually the one who handles the football team. Doesn't excuse that it took that long to get updated.
-
I was hoping for Gig 'Em Riders.

Still not updated....

I have to admit that if Nodaks ends up winning, I can almost guarantee I will laugh every single time the public address announcer at the REA yells "Here comes your University of North Dakota Nodaks!!" because of how bad it sounds.
