We don't know what kind of support they need to meet the supporting tribe requirement - perhaps they already have the support they need, or have an agreement with a Sioux tribe in the works that will satisfy the requirement. If they can negotiate their way into keeping the name, it's going to be much cheaper than fighting in court over it for the next three or four years, and probably faster, too.

I still think there's a cause of action under equal protection in federal court if they want to keep the name, and people other than the university could reasonably have standing to sue. I strongly doubt that the NCAA, made up of mostly public university member institutions, isn't a state actor for equal protection purposes...

John.

I have often thought that UND medical school should attempt to become a leader in the addiction field. It has a huge impact socially and financially throughout the country. The current "solutions" are in need of improvment. It could build large clinics in Devils Lake area and Bismarck area for treatment and training. Encourage Native American participatation working on new solutions to a serious problem for them and many others. Work on reducing prison population that are in for drug and alcohol related reasons. Become world renowned for innovation in attacking the problem. I think this is the kind of thing that would influence tribal councils rather than an evening of entertainment.

The University of North Dakota should not be at the mercy of nobody.

"If that approval is granted, it may be withdrawn at any time and UND must change its nickname within one year, said Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem."

Oh hell why bother then. You know they will withdraw it later anyways. Just change it now. That is a stupid provision by Stenehjem, he should have made it indifinate.

I guess I feel very disappointed that they did not fight to the end. If they were going to agree to this why did they go to court at all. I think that the NCAA should have to do more then formally say they are not "Hostile and Abusive". And if the name is not "Hostile and Abusive" then we should ahve never been on that list at all, therefore we would have not been in this mess at all. So my question is still. Why?

I agree totally. The only way to resolve this issue will be to sit down with the tribes and say "what can we do?". Honestly, though, I think the quick reply will be "not a damn thing" and the nickname will be gone in three years.

It wont be the same watching the Gophers take on the Flickertails.

From a Gopher perspective, I'm torn. I love anything that pisses Sioux fans off  , on the other hand, I'll miss the old Sioux name.

I understand the move however, and I thnk you should just move forward with adopting a new name and logo. It seems the writting is on the wall. Why wait three years. It would just drag out the inevitable. And while I like Force of the North as a slogan, it's not a name.

BTW, what's with the new logo on this web page? It's kind of lame compared to the the classic "Blackhawks" Siou head or even the more recent Sioux head you've used.

I'll probably get blasted for this idea but here goes nothing......

There seems to be much hatred towards the NCAA for mandating this. Some have said that its "illegal" or "unconsitutional" for the NCAA to govern. To that my response is.... leave the NCAA. The NCAA is a group or club. Just like any self governed group the members must play by the rules. If UND and its supporters want to keep the name....then leave. If you want to say then ditch the name. It's pretty simple. Also, I have heard many criticize the NCAA and refer to it as NC$$.... Please feel free to give the NCAA its money back once a conference is gained for non-football sports. I"m sure that the NCAA would love to not have to give monies from the NCAA basketball tournaments to UND.

My simple only request is that if the name does change, then I think it should be something that the public chooses.

Go Cavalry!!!!

Good luck. A "multi-cultural" committee full of "diversity" will surely approve the final choices and you'll wind up with this:

Storm

Thunder

Lightning

Heat

Wild

Fusion

Fury

Silver Hawks

Blue Sky

Shining Prairie

I agree thats what we did at Central my senior year we were known as Redskins my freshmen year then the school board dropped the name then the rest of my years at Central we were the Maroon and Grey so my senior year we the students wrote down names that had to do with Central as a whole, and the final two were Knights and Pride and Knights won by a landslide because its part of Central's song, so i think the students of UND should vote for a new name and use the same elimination process we used at Central.

Do people actually think that if we change the nickname we'll be able to keep the logo?!?! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard!! This whole case has to do with the nickname AND the logo. To suggest that we'll somehow be able to keep the logo has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard all morning.

looks like the "fight" is officially out of the "Fighting Sioux".......how weak...

Go Huskies, Bulldogs, Pioneers, Gophers, Mavericks, Tigers, Seawolves, Badgers...

That is an unacceptable settlement. Seems we didn't get much after spending 900,000.00.

The Blizzard... that's the name of our County's Hockey Association... I've always like it. But not as much as I like(d) the Fighting Sioux...

Wow. Sounds like a green weenie deal to me. Me thinks that the driving force behind this

"recommended" deal is that the lawyers who had been crawling all over the case, sucking

fees for how many months, finally figured that they had been to the trough long enough

and that, rather going to the hind titty called the nitty gritty work of preparing for trial and getting

the job done, it was best to propose a wrap on the deal now.

Of course, this is a bit unfair as I have not seen any details on the agreement. I suppose that

not requiring The Ralph to retrofit at any time for any reason is a good thing. I suppose that

support from the tribes can be garnered. Allowing the tribes to change their mind at a later time

is b.s. Perhaps the University could contract that right away from the tribes, depending on whatever

consideration might be given for that relinquished right.

All in all, in sounds to me like the lawyers got weak knees after getting full pockets. A typical

malady of many, if not most, lawyers.

I say, no nickname, just "North Dakota." Use the state highway symbol for a logo.
