skateshattrick Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 No, If he game it would be for 2007. Heisenberg has officially moved him from a 2006 recruit to a 2007 recruit. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Mario is a 1988, but a junior in high school, so unless he did accelerated education, he would have to wait until 2007. Kermit Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 Trying to understand what a coach would do (& is allowed to do) in this kind of situation. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If the coaching staff is uncertain about possible departures, it does create recruiting dilemmas. One possibility is to recruit a player(s) for 2007 who could be brought in next year if needed. For example, TJ Oshie was originally recruited for 2006 with the idea that he would play in the USHL this year. Brady Murray's departure opened up a spot/scholarship and Oshie's development made the year in the USHL seem unnecessary, so he came in this fall. Quote
dagies Posted October 19, 2005 Author Posted October 19, 2005 Between Stafford and Zajac it's a pretty good bet at least one will be gone at the end of this year, and an unfortunately decent chance both will be gone. I would be that the coaches are hard after 1-2 top forwards. My bet would be they're targeting at least 1 additional forward for next year, and maybe a 2nd using Kermit's plan. Quote
dagies Posted October 20, 2005 Author Posted October 20, 2005 I wouldnt bet on Smaby staying. Right. I was so focused on forwards I forgot to mention Smaby. Quote

This is from "Quick Facts" from the Minnesota Hockey Journal. Quick Facts has learned that Michael Forney of Thief River Falls has received a scholarship offer from the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers to play next season, 2006. Forney had 27 goals and 30 assists last season for Thief River Falls. Forney is also being pursued by the University of North Dakota who want him to spend a year in the USHL playing for Sioux Falls prior to joining the team in 2007. Quote
sprig Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Looks like he'll have to want to be a Sioux very badly if he comes to ND, unless he'd like to postpone college for an additional year. Quote

sagard Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Unless UND isn't completely sold on him, I'm sure they can/will find a way to fit him in for '06 if they must. With most of these Gophers/Sioux recruiting battles it comes down to the kid picking a school. If UND truly wants him and he is willing, both sides would find a way for '06. Quote

tnt Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 The one thing I've learned is not to speculate who will stay and who will go. How many times have people said they would be back and then don't. The odds that Jason Blake would be back for his Senior season were slim and we were all pleasantly surprised that he stayed. Bottom line is to enjoy them while you can, because nobody but the players themselves has a clue to what they will do. The best the coaches can do is make contingency plans and hope for the best. tnt Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Darcy Zajac moved up to 7th in BCHL with a 5-point night the other day. I would think a feisty player who can score would be playing somewhere in college next year. Quote
choyt3 Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 The "No doubt about it" early departure for the Sioux this year is Smaby. Likewise, after that, the next one to fly is Travis Zajac. NJ is really high on him. I don't think that there is any way ANYONE knows what these guys are going to do, except the players themselves. It's fun to speculate and all, but do you really think that there is "no doubt about it"? Quote
#1Hakfan Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 If Forney does whats best for his career he will go to the USHL next year. If he goes to Minnesota or UND next fall he will be 4th or 5th line. Not because he is a bad player, but because both teams are so stacked with young talent. Minnesota wants him next year just so they can get him there. He needs to become stronger and a year in the USHL will help him adjust to more physical play. Remember they were going to redshirt Ben Gordon this year. So they must have brought him in to early. After the next 2 home series (Denver & Wisconsin) you will see a player or two committ. They are kids that will be on official visits and it will give us more things to discuss on this board. I thought this would happen after the Neastern series, but they probably wanted recruits to be here during better games. Quote

spfreak Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 How about Jaroslav Markovic of Tri City? I heard a few mutterings from some when we got Spirko, but not much since. Does anyone think that he would be a good addition? Quote
Kermit Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Michael Forney apparently played 2 games with the Des Moines Bucs in the USHL this weekend. No points, no shots, no PIM, but a +3. http://www.pointstreak.com/framed/prostats...60&seasonid=883 Quote
