They would first have to fix their massive inconsistency & play a sound, disciplined team-game to even get a sniff of 2nd place. Right now they look like a bunch of individuals without an identity. The team's predicament falls squarely in the lap of the coaching staff.

Cutting down on the after the whistle crap would be great.  Taking too many penalties...an area that they improved on last year...need to go back to that.
And getting some of these players back from injuries.

First step in gaining consistency would be being able to play a consistent lineup.  Right now they're losing players every week.  Even getting guys like Croal back, who showed some great potential & speed in his minutes, would be a boost.

This is way too easy to avoid but they keep falling for it.

With the pile of injuries over last several years, maybe it is time to look for a new strength/conditioning coach? Are the injuries related to the training or lack of certain training? A fresh/new set of eyes on things might be good. Same eyes/mind been in place for a very long time.

Just a thought.

Consistency is a state of mind rather than something that's dependent on how many healthy players a team has (Berg & Zmolek being out did not cause the d-men & forwards to miss basic assignments). UND had plenty of talent on the ice last night, but they were still making fundamental errors that should have been corrected a few games into the season, at most. Those mental mistakes are a sign that the team isn't learning its lessons, & much of that falls on the coaching staff for not getting their message through effectively.

A state of mind?
So let's say you replace Montgomery (a player with like 8 games total of playing dman in his entire career) with Zmolek (one of the best defensive dmen in the entire league), that wouldn't matter in any of these missed assignments or situations?

I'm not saying that UND couldn't beat DU with its current lineup.  It absolutely could.
And I'm not trying to rip on Monty, as he's done great stepping up into the role as others have gone down.

If healthy, UND could compete and potentially beat Denver.

What concerns me the most lately at UND is the following:

O Mac = O goals

Wilkie = 1 Goal

TJ S. = Not his fault, but is letting in 3 goals per game against good competition. UND isn’t going to score 4+ goals to win these games.

Lack of continued production from USHL to college. I understand it’s a big jump but our USHL studs, minus Jackson Blake, are not developing enough (production wise) at UND.

Sasha, Mac S  (skating is a hurting at this level) are on a decent trajectory, would be nice to get a few more goals…

Transfer portal - depending on it way too much annually for goalies and D-man. Have to do better recruiting, no reason you can’t find a goalie or D-‘man. Tons of players and parity, most blue chippers are forwards coming into college hockey minus Sanderson, Makar etc. over the last few years.

Zeev Buium is really good but I don’t think most scouts had him putting up 50 points as freshman. Could say, UND’s Jake L. no one expected him to dominate points wise last year like he did.

Wiebe was raised a d-man, is a draft pick & is a second-year starter, & he made quite a big gaffe by not covering his man in the slot on a basic play, resulting in a goal. The forwards were also missing assignments, resulting in many grade A chances for DU. We got a glimpse last night of the same inconsistency that we saw in the Augustana game (& even the first MSU-M game, which should have been a loss) when most everyone was healthy; except now we can pin it on injuries. Even in the first Cornell game before Strathmann & Croal got injured, the entire team looked like they had just returned from summer vacation. The inconsistency appears to be systemic, regardless of the health of the roster.

The next head coaching hire could possibly be a yoga master of some kind?  To improve the mental health and state of mind of the team?

Berg is the only hard one but he is on one line three other lines don’t need to change

Several of the lines didn’t change for a few games in a row and once berg was out we had no choice but to shuffle the deck. Especially when Andrew is in, he can’t just slide onto a line where berg was. It’s a lot tougher than saying “keep the lines together” when you lose your top center since one of your next best options at center happens to be the wing on a different line (although it seems like Omac should be the one sliding to center). Therefore you have to change 3-4 lines.

Too much negative vibes. We knew that the first 10 or 11 games would be difficult, and injuries have come into play. Last time I looked at SOS, we were 2. After DU it will probably be 1. Win tonight and we're 6-5. Win 5 of the next 6 and we're at least 10-6. Not what we would like but not horrible.

Only problem with that is winning 5 of the next 6.
