‘North Dakota nice’ to ‘North Dakota mean': The bruising battle over a university’s new nickname

Three years ago, after a long, losing battle with the NCAA, the voters of North Dakota decided in a referendum that “The Fighting Sioux” had to go as the official team name and logo for the state’s flagship University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Since then, the teams have gone officially nameless, just “UND” or “North Dakota.”

And that turns out to be just the way plenty of UND boosters like it, mostly, it seems, as a form of protest. “If it can’t be Sioux then no other name will do,” said one of thousands of North Dakotans asked by the University for suggestions.

He sure made a lot of points/opinions that weren't relative to wishing Kelley well in retirement.

Trying to stay on his soapbox,  but it has crumbled under him,  and he's no longer relevant.

Longie just can't let things sit.  Hopefully he doesn't point out that he has multiple degrees from UND in future letters to the editor.

This guy is such a tool, he twists so much in his wording. The one that gets me is the claim that ND voted to get rid of the Sioux name because of his views, which it actually got voted out to avoid sanctions, not that anyone shared his view.

I expect to see a letter from the other side of this,(Sioux tribe members) very soon from the herald.

One of the arguments by the anti crowd was that Sioux was a derogatory term meaning "snake". Given to the Lakota by their mortal enemy the Chippewa. Old Erich doesn't seem to have any problem referring to himself or the tribe as Sioux now, does he.

I read it a couple of times, it sounds more like a victory lap about the Fighting Sioux Nickname being changed. Actually, that happened three years ago. So, he's a bit late to the party.
