Popular Post The Sicatoka
Dear Fargo Forum editorial board, I read your pap and claptrap from yesterday, specifically: http://www.inforum.com/opinion/editorials/3741306-forum-editorial-und-logo-process-too-long OK, I agree with your intent -- this process has gone on far too long; however, I can't help but notice the Fargo Fool'em failures. Ah ha. We get it. It was all part of a fashionable paean to “inclusiveness” that so infects the academy. It was symptomatic of a bend-over-backward attempt to satisfy everyone, which, of course, will never happen. It was, in effect, the committee covering its collective butt by attempting to demonstrate how open, transparent and democratic the process has been. Nice try. No, Forum editorial board, "Nice try" to you. You (and the Herald's) historic stances have trained UND administration to "bend-over-backward attempt(ing) to satisfy everyone" and as you say (giving credit where due) it "will never happen". The attempt to satisfy everyone put us here in the first place and you folks were ones beating (yup, I'm gonna say it) the war drums. The process has been so unnecessarily politically correct ... The irony of that statement is only exceeded by its hypocrisy. UND wasn't "politically correct" enough in the eyes of ForumComm in the past; now, when attempting the PC approach of trying to be "diverse" and "inclusive" UND gets ripped on by ForumComm for doing it. You are trying to play both sides. So is UND not PC enough or too PC? Or is there a "PC gauge" that only you folks can see and read? ... a focused, pragmatic committee could have selected a new moniker in a helluva lot shorter time than it has taken. The only statement the Forum gets correct also includes some of the most unprofessional editorializing I've witnessed in quite a while. Does the new AP style guide include "helluva" as a real word for use by real journalistic professionals? North Dakotans were treated to a feel-good, self-congratulatory celebration of “inclusiveness” that pandered to people who never will be – and never wanted to be – included in UND’s logo change. What a waste of time. No, the pandering UND did last week wasn't to the people who never wanted to be included in a logo change. Those people never wanted change much less being pandered to now. The pandering was to the PC crowd that continues to demand "the PC way" of diversity and inclusiveness even after their great victory. To know who those people are please refer to a mirror. PS - If UND hadn't released the raw, unadulterated lists, you folks would be screaming FOIA and cover-up. Again, you're playing both sides. And it's quite beneath you. PPS - Tom, Brad, and other ForumComm folks that haunt here: I know you folks read here; feel free to pass this along to Matt Von Pinnon.
the green team
Not that you need a pat on the back from me but...very well said. You framed it up nicely- and Forum Comm and their hypocrisy which you laid out point by point is now in the proverbial "box".

nodakhoops
Saying this process is to long and saying Forum Comm is being hypocritical is this instance is like saying grass is green and the sky is blue. Don't think you could really argue either.
The Sicatoka
And I stayed away from this ... the North Dakota Legislature might have done a better job. UND likely would have a new moniker by now had lawmakers taken up the task. ... until now. The Forum editorial board really believes that the Legislature, that couldn't get it done in Indianapolis in face-to-face meetings with the NCAA, who are the ones who instigated the ridiculous "cooling off period", the same folks who adjourned before dealing with a bill on state employee health benefits so they could avoid immediate controversy and yet go to special session (another "committee formed" anyone?), would be doing any better? The track record clearly indicates otherwise.
jdub27
Not to mention they (Forum Communications) have enjoyed and benefitted from this lengthy process more than anyone. Only so many fluff stories to go around.

The Sicatoka
Just a "relight" of this one to all our Forum Communications friends who read this board: you can see it in their articles. Yet, they don't want to talk about their own credibility.
gfNDfan
my "SNAP" moment came about a month ago when a GF fishwrap reporterette....I'll call her A.B. put out a call for "FIGHTING SIOUX FANS SHOW YOUR PRIDE!" - essentially a "send in your pics" and tell us your story of why you're so "proud" of the old name. Talk about ripping a bandaid off an old wound - JUST to sell papers and irritate people while the new nickname search is going on. I was furious! I sent an email calling her on it - sincerely asking how this crap was really a "journalistic" endeavor? No reply (shocker) but the actual article was pretty lame and went nowhere afterwards...SOMEONE had a slightly guilty conscience of putting out this slop instead of being a real professional journalist and digging into all sides. I'm hoping you're reading this A.B....you're better than that!!
CMSioux
I'd bet money the story idea came from those higher up than her (maybe even down south) she's just the one that has to do the dirty work. What I would like to see is an expose on the Native American Center at UND - the relationship between the Chippewa and the Lakota Sioux students, the center's unwelcome attitude toward those who don't agree with their stance on issues etc. There are Lakota Sioux who support the nickname but if you do you aren't welcome at the Center - how does that work for what is supposed to be a center for all Native Americans?
