homer
Well, does PJ Sparks get some carries against UNC. According to Wayne Nelson Mitch Sutton's year is over with a broken collarbone. Thanks for putting the time in Mitch. A bruising runner who always ran hard and was having a good senior season.
sioux24/7
PJ better get some carries in! We really need some sort of big bruising RB next year.
iramurphy
PJ and other back ups should have been getting time already. When you get blown out by Montana State or EWU that is a great opportunity to get these other guys some PT. Who care if you lose by 40 or 60? Doesn't matter, you still got spanked. This tends to happen at the college level more than HS and is worse in the NFL. If one team is either blowing out the other or on the receiving end of a blow out get the subs some valuable PT. I am not insinuating the UNC game will be a blowout by the way. We need to play better to win. Defense needs to be more than a speed bump and offensively we need to be more consistent.
geaux_sioux
That sucks Sutton is done. Sparks and Shaugabay should provide some size back there. I wouldnt be comfortable with the thought of haveing 2 rbs that weigh about 170 a piece carrying the load
YoHo
When geoux_sioux talks about BIG bruising RB's wonder if he means on like 5'-8 160# Weston Dressler, former UND standout who is up for CFL player of year. He is a Slot back, which someone of his size should be. Doubt if he "plows through" too many 300# linemen. As for WHO plays or WHEN, all players are seen and evaluated in pracice for hours each week. One would think the coaches would be most qualified to determine WHO plays ane WHEN. AGREE? Finally Sparks, a fine RB,or wouldn't be here, and Jer came at same time. Both gave their best shots and were evaluated accordingly, Right? Anyone who thinks they can do a better job of coaching, should apply for the job.
UND92,96
I remember three years ago when Sutton was practically UND's only offensive weapon. Injuries took their toll over the years, but it was nice that he was able to finish so well with 11 rushing td's as a senior. I have enjoyed watching him play. The only time Jake and Jer are successful between the tackles is when they reach the second level untouched. That is why they were successful last year when the blocking was better. This year Sutton has had to carry more of the load because neither small backs can be expected to make yards through contact. They will each get more carries against unc but there will be someone else getting carries to provide size. They've always used 3 backs and like a power back speed back combo so someone else will be in the rotation.

Yes, GS as you said, Jake and Jer run better in second stage where speed and agility are to their strengths. Bruising FB types are also required. A good example, is think against SDSU (not sure)Jer took it to the 2yd line, Sutton in 2 drove it in for score. All the above applies unless the OL blows a hole open to get some steps ahead of the DB. Am sure you know much more than I about FB, but we have some concern about what effects overly negative comments have on these young men. After all like breeds it's kind, neggies breed neggies, and positives their kind. Am sure NO-one wants to lose, and when they do, the last thing they need is more negatives. Also finally we out here haven't thought of "anything" the coaches haven't thought of many, many times. Cheers.

bincitysioux
That is unfortunate about Sutton. He's never been flashy, but he has certainly been a consistent, effective, and reliable player over the years. Thanks, Mitch................ It has been a treat to watch you over the course of your career................
YoHo
I'm not sure where the negativity was in my posts other than it sucking that Sutton is hurt. Not so much on this thread, but check through others and there is plenty of negative stuff, and not just from you. Would have posted earlier, but was unable to get on line. A few post up you mention the size issue again and being "uncomfortable" and correctly so. As stated a big back is needed from time to time. Also we wanted to remind those of outstanding "small" RB Weston Dressler, who is doing quite well in the CFL. Am sure Miller and Jer share more than a few of his attributes, and truly believe that can and possibly will be shown. So, lets see what happens from here on out, UND has lost a very fine RB, person, and leader, who went out a WINNER. Let's hope that he started a BIG TREND. Have a great day to all. Weston Dressler played WR not RB. Garman and Miller play RB. Not the same.

Position aside, they may be nearly as quick and powerful as Dressler but he had a knack for finding open space in the secondary that no other UND receiver has been able to replicate. We have never seen Weston play, but have heard much about him. Understand this is his 5th season up north. Now maybe the rest of the RB "stable" can develope to their full potential for the good of the team and UND. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out going forward. We here are hoping for the BEST to all.

They're bigger than he was but certainly not nearly as powerful. I understand that Weston holds the all time power index record at UND by a very wide margin. Also I know none of the current guys have sub 10.5 100m speed like Weston and Chappell both had. We have never seen Weston play, but have heard much about him. If he were at 190 he'd be a beast. Jer doesn't seem to have a whole lot of room left on his frame but could get leaner and faster, he's ridiculously quick but doesn't have the ability to pull away from guys for a long run yet. PJ needs to keep getting bigger and needs to get a step faster, he's plenty quick and could be a load with another 10 lean pounds. Maybe if Shaugabay can get up around 220 he can be a legit power back, he certainly runs violently already. Pack on some more good weight on him and he could be a beast. I'm also excited to see Varner develop, he seems kinda like a bigger Miller and runs really smooth. Hopefully the run game picks back up next year and these guys all have a big impact.
