  1. UND hockey drives more than enough page views to sustain coverage. Arguably, it's the only thing keeping the Herald afloat.
  2. You've sampled the entire menu? Impressive.
  3. High marks. A great addition to the local scene. And honestly, will anyone miss the Mill?
  4. Okay, I'll play along. We first have to concede that single letters present a materially different scenario than two-letter combinations. Even then, the Minnesota M is markedly different from the others, and Maryland's includes a turtle. Color and secondary marks help distinguish the others, as does context. And who's to say what fans of those schools think is confusing or not. With two-letter combos, it's much easier to differentiate. There are on-center interlocks, off-center interlocks, side-by-side, top-and-bottom, diagonal up, diagonal down, script, italicized. Putting a block N right squarely over a block D is hardly the only solution, but it happens to be Notre Dame's registered trademark. Use it and there will be confusion, as you know first-hand. If the goal is avoiding confusion, you have to do something. Picking a unique logo is a good start.
  5. FFS, just last night you said there wouldn't be any confusion. You just proved my entire point. Thank you?
  6. That's the next social evil eradication project, once all of the titans of entertainment, politics, and industry are toppled. There were those who thought those boys' clubs would go on forever, I am sure, but look what has happened in the last few weeks.
  7. It had virtually nothing to do with helmets on the field, and virtually everything to do with merchandise and marketing. That's a none too subtle distinction, especially since the latter is where the money is to be made. Dislike the new logo all you want, but don't kid yourself into thinking the interlocking was ever going to be a long-term solution, ESPECIALLY once UND went to D1. Using another school's logo is a high school move, not something big time college programs do.
  8. UIowa fans will cry foul. Maybe UND can have the hospice wing overlooking the stadium, instead of pediatrics.
  9. A proper UNDMC in the offing? That would be a win-win.
  10. Agree that talk is cheap. But, if nothing else, they finally put their money where their mouth is by hiring an architect. A firm commitment to a 9-figure investment demonstrates something. What would make you happy...if they dissolved entirely and put up a State Dept of Health MASH tent?
  11. That's some serious thread drift right there.
  12. Lazy because it doesn't require any work or thought to implement. It's easy because the city can look at last year's tax receipts and multiply by 1.xxx to reasonably estimate impact. No need to be creative or have to do some tough projections. It's blunt, and it affects everyone. People can choose to dine out, can choose to consume alcohol, can choose entertainment options...nobody can get around buying necessities, taxable grocery items, etc. And it is a stepping stone to the next increase, and the next, and before you know it, were on the doorstep of 8%. Let's face it, there is ALWAYS going to be some dire need.
  13. If this new tax sunsets in 20 years and the net sales tax rate actually decreases, I'll send each of you a nice, handwritten note of apology.
  14. It was but one suggestion, never posited as a dollar-for-dollar substitute. The sales tax strikes me as a lazy solution, and all I keep getting on here is blind defense of it. The takeaway is that there are only two camps and thinking outside the box is verboten. You're either a pro-tax supporter of the community or an anti-tax nutcase advocating for the town to die. Individual voters have very little direct say in taxation. Levies go up, home valuations go up, fees go up. Nothing anybody can do. When a sales tax goes to a vote, I'd like to think people would be a little more thoughtful. The only real loser here is the library. It's now obvious that GF residents weren't worried about the money last time. Just the intended purpose.
  15. People are going to come here anyway. Can you name a single person who made a go/no go decision based on room/occupancy taxes or rental car fees?
  16. A strong Altru is good for GF, period. I have a short wish list...can we finally get a locally-based life flight helicopter? It blows my mind that we don't have one, given our status as a rural hub and the distance to top-level facilities in Fargo or Minneapolis. And maybe a helipad that's attached to the building? Can you imagine, having to ride 150 yards across a roped off parking lot in an ambulance just to board a waiting copter?
  17. As a proud opponent of paying higher taxes generally, allow me to retort. This has nothing to do with the half-cent, at least not on the micro level. And no, Sic, I am not so dim as to conflate one-half of one percent with going up by half. This has everything to do with responsible use of taxpayer funds, the future, and the inevitable and insatiable lust of some policy makers for more. Nearly every present tax started out as a temporary tax. Sure, they are put forth for specific purposes, for specific time periods, yada, yada, yada. But when is the last time the sun actually went down on a sales tax. Before you know it, tax rates creep up and up. And what was 5% not that long ago, and then bumped to 6 or 6.5%, is now 7.25 or 7.5%. Where does it end? There are alternatives. Hotel and car rental taxes do not affect locals at all. Sin taxes (alcohol, tobacco) do not affect everyone. Even a restaurant tax can be avoided or mitigated by eating out less. How about street parking permits? How about bicycle registration fees to offset Greenway expenses? Why not solicit voluntary donations? (After Tuesday, it sure seems like GF residents are ready to pony up.) Sell naming rights to public facilities? Get creative, FFS. Any Tom, Dick or Harry can slap on a sales tax. I would even be in favor of a penny a post surcharge on siouxsports.com. Where do I send that check for $12.98?
  18. I thought it was decent. I haven't been to the Fargo location, so cannot compare, but I had a couple of street tacos - both were good. Great music and atmosphere. Friendly staff. Hope it opens for lunch soon.
  19. Well, Goddammit, let's pass a new tax for that, too.
  20. Yes, let's all celebrate higher taxes.
  21. Two thoughts about responsible use of public funds for "roads and bridges": 1. Improving 42nd to go under/over the rail line is a luxury, not a necessity. I've waited for those trains, and while a nuisance, it's never been a life or death situation. There are alternate routes. Maybe coordinating schedules with BNSF would be a good start. Heck, I'd rather invest public funds to relocate the entire yard a few miles west of town. THAT would be a re-development game changer for Grand Forks. 2. I-29 interchanges should be paid for by the landowners who stand to benefit the most. As the I-29 corridor is developed to the south, commercial and retail frontage properties will skyrocket in value. The new interchange will spawn gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, strip malls, and even single- and multi-family residential development. Why give those landowners and developers a free ride? The same analysis applies to the mythical bridge crossing the Red, and we can share half of that with Minnesota anyway. I would prefer not to give the City a blank check for either project.
  22. Are those UND green pads he's wearing?
  23. If this doesn't make the pregame video montage at REA, I'll be crushed. https://deadspin.com/youth-hockey-coach-fired-for-completely-fucking-bonkers-1820145170
  24. http://www.grandforksherald.com/business/4354180-fearing-they-were-being-replaced-several-employees-grand-forks-taco-bell-walk-job This story is getting more and more loco by the day.
