Academia is very much like this. I think 95% of the people at UND are great to work with and be around. But it's those 5% that spoil it for everyone else. And even the best faculty members can get petty and childish about some of the smallest, most inconsequential things. I think this happens because in academia, everyone assumes a certain ownership of their work, it is very personal to them. Whether it is their research projects, their manuscripts, their service projects or the classes they teach, there is a lot of "themselves" in their work. So any attacks (real or perceived) on the "ownership" of their work are met with fierce resistance. This case seems to be more about a complacent workplace that is not happy someone has entered it and shaken things up. Maybe these people can learn something from this person instead of trying to get rid of her.

I think you have this all wrong. This professor is loved by her students, did everything a professor is supposed to do to earn tenure (teaching, research, service) and went above and beyond in those areas. But because she wouldn't go along with the group-think of the department and kiss everyone's arse, most of them wanted to get rid of her so that they could continue with the status quo. This is why you have a grievance process to correct problems like this. Maybe this department needs a shake-up from "outsiders" like this to better serve our students, which is why UND exists in the first place. As for the holier-than-thou private sector being merit-based and objective in hiring and promoting, that is pure fantasy. There is just as much (if not more) cronyism and nepotism in the private sector as anyplace else. Lots of ignorant jerks get promoted up the chain of command because their rich uncle or daddy owns the company or is chairman of the board and people dare not fire him or her. There are a lot of family-owned businesses that employ the son-in-law that couldn't get a job anyplace else (if you get my drift). The process worked the way it was supposed to at UND in this case. The department will get over it or they can just get different jobs.

In 1999, UND beat the Canadian National Team 6-1 at the Old REA in early October. I am not sure which Canadian team that was exactly, but it was a good early sign of what that team was capable of.

Sunday afternoon, February 15th, 1998. UND trailed Minnesota 3-0 after two periods. Then, early in the 3rd, Curtis Murphy scored on the PP. 3-1 UM Then Jay and Jeff Panzer scored on a pretty 2-1 rush. 3-2 UM Then Jason Blake took a pass from Murphy at the Gopher blue line, cut to the middle and rifled a shot to the glove side of G Steve DeBus. Woog calls his TO one goal too late to make a difference. Game tied 3-3 Then Jay Panzer pounded it home right in front of the net. 4-3 Sioux Finally, Matt Henderson iced the game with an empty netter. It happened just as DeBus came off the ice. 5-3 Sioux FINAL. Series Sweep. Stick Salute. And some very sore eardrums! The Sioux outshot the Rodents 21-1 in the 3rd period. The look on Woog's face was absolutely priceless; he could not believe what was happening. He must still have nightmares of the Old REA in the 1990's; from all the losing and from the student section! I have that game on tape and will NEVER get rid of it. When the Old REA was being demolished this year, this is the game I thought of immediately. Great memories. -
I think he said that before the 2006 winter games in Turin, Italy. Canada finished 7th and the United States finished 8th. They probably had to use the jaws of life to get his foot out of his mouth. The United States is producing more players from more places and there is so much upside to the game south of the 49th parallel. I have seen several articles from Canadian sportswriters who think the United States will continue getting better and better at hockey and will challenge Canada more and more in international competition.

As long as we win a medal, I don't care who the coach is. This is nation vs. nation; for two weeks all the bitter rivalries are set aside.

I say we should wait until the end of this week and see what happens. If there isn't a new coach announced before Christmas, then I will start to worry. Until then, I am comfortable trusting Faison with the details. He has done a solid job up to this point; no reason to think that will change.

1000% correct. You simply cannot slash and burn your way into prosperity. You have to spend money to buy whiskey. I hope those are the principles Faison has in mind as he conducts this coaching search. -
In that case, let's load up the non-conference slate with a bunch of NAIA schools from North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, etc. Seriously, I think we should set D-II programs as the absolute floor when deciding how many "soft" opponents to schedule prior to the start of the conference schedule. NAIA schools should be banned. Permanently. We are not a "transition" program anymore.

Generally, those two things go together. A perennial 9-2, 10-1 program will generally make more money than a perennial 2-9, 1-10 program. And that is why the coaching search at UND is so important. -
Well, I wasn't one of those and I was very down when Blais left for the Blue Jackets. When I saw the headline in the GF Heraldo that morning, I realized that an era (a GOLDEN era) in Sioux hockey was over.

I don't think Saban will go anywhere anytime soon. They locked him up for the rest of his coaching career. I don't see him going to the NFL (the track record for college coaches at the next level is generally poor) and he has led the Tide to three national titles. That should buy him all the breathing space he needs to finish out his contract and retire on top of his game.

Not many because Blais had 2 NCAA titles (1997, 2000) and arguably saved the program from long-term ruin when he took it over in 1994. That buys you some serious breathing space.
