  1. I agree with you. I don't think the Baltimore Ravens care that Joe Flacco was an FCS QB. All he does is win.
  2. Ugh! Just the mention of Warren Sapp's name reminds me that the Vikings passed up on a future Hall of Famer for a non-descript DT from Florida who did jack squat in the NFL. I just shut off my TV and went to Kraft Field to watch UND baseball; that is how p!ssed off I was.
  3. Good points Mafia, but the Eagles haven't won a world championship (either NFL or Super Bowl) in over 50 years. I think that is what he was hinting at.
  4. Hockey doesn't start until October. The reason we stopped having night games is because Dale Lennon didn't like them for some reason. I think it is time to go back to them early on in the season.
  5. He could have added a or a just to make it more clear.
  6. Come on now, wasn't that a little over the top?
  7. Same here. Locally and independently-owned. Good food. Lots of TV screens. Prices were reasonable. Much better than most national chains (although BWW is pretty good).
  8. The name of the place was Players Sports Grill and Bar and yes, the Big Dog Breakfast was awesome.
  9. They are sticking it to their students....again.
  10. "Gummint" isn't supposed to make money. You shouldn't run government like a business and you shouldn't run business like a government. They serve two totally different functions. And libraries are places where everyone can go and have access to books, movies, computers, etc. without having to pay some outrageous admission fee or club membership. How would all the golf enthusiasts on this forum like it if all golf courses were expensive, private clubs and therefore out of the price range of most ordinary people? Having said all that, the idea of having a coffee house or some kind of complimentary business attached to the library is a solid idea and it is something I have not heard anyone mention. It could help defray some of the costs of the library (both construction costs and future on-going maintenance and overhead). Does someone want to write a letter to the Heraldo to float this idea?
  11. We'll need more room to put computers that people are going to want to use. There also are movies that people can check out (educational and entertainment); we'll need room for that. Maybe some private reading and/or meeting rooms people can check out; that would be useful as well. Also, the library hosts children's reading programs and other events. And like I have said before, books are not going to totally go away.
  12. City of Grand Forks Population (1970): 39,008 City of Grand Forks Population (2015): 57,011 Which is (drum roll please) a 50% increase. Which makes the 50% increase in the size of the library reasonable. In closing, that county population figure is always thrown in our faces because it makes it look like people are leaving in droves. The fact is, the streets are as busy as I can remember them.
  13. The city is much bigger than it was back in 1972, the county as a whole has lost people in the more rural areas. And people in the city are more likely to use the library on a regular basis.
  14. Real books will never completely go away, at least not in our lifetimes. And 50% more space is reasonable considering Grand Forks is much larger than it was when the current building was built. And they likely will put in more computers and more technology, which will cost money, but is needed to make the library as useful as possible. You are 100% right about parking and the impracticality of a downtown location. The midtown location is the only one that makes sense for everybody.
  15. If 95% of it ends up being advertising, then I think the businesses that advertise there should have to pay for 95% of the cost of putting it up.
  16. The overall number of people that use it has grown and grown. You can't find parking half the time and when it is busy, it is quite crowded in there. There is a false perception that nobody uses the library anymore; it simply isn't true.
  17. You would be surprised at the number of people that use the library for their internet access. Not everyone has high-speed internet or a smartphone. Go into the G.F. Public Library sometime; the computers are usually packed with people. That is what a new library would focus on; online and electronic resources. And those things are lacking at the current library and would be expensive to put in vs. building a new facility. Even the Harley E. French Health Sciences Library on campus is going to get rid of most of their paper copies and make digital access to journals available 24/7. The future of libraries will look much different from what it was even 10 years ago.
  18. I don't think we can accurately judge how they look or what they add to the game experience until we go to a game with the boards functioning.
  19. Nobody has disputed that and that is what should happen. Polls last time showed people were supportive of a new library, but all the confusion over where it should be built is what clouded the issue and made people reluctant to vote yes. This time, they are actually vetting locations. I think the midtown location near the Grand Cities Mall is the best place (plenty of parking, room to build). The current library site could then be sold to private interests.
  20. The first proposal back in 2011 was sunk by two major things: 1) Uncertainty over location and 2) A horrible marketing campaign (If I EVER hear about "The Hobbit" ever again, I will scream). At least this time, they are doing a thorough study on where to build it. And they are having public meetings where you can give your input or ask questions.
  21. I have often wondered just how many warheads were targeted at Grand Forks Air Force Base by the Soviets during the Cold War. Scary to think I grew up 15 miles east of a prime target for ICBMs.
  22. That definitely was a major twist of fate that told us maybe, just maybe, this time it would be different.
  23. That company is struggling right now. I don't think they will be expanding anytime soon.
  24. I've been soaking in the good vibes since April 9th!
