  1. The problem is that there are still people downplaying COVID and comparing it to the flu. But the CDC models the number of flu deaths. They don't have accurate counts at all. The same will happen with COVID after the fact and the number of fatalities will undoubtedly rise. By not taking a swag at the death counts the states aren't providing good information for public policy. And while I agree that the death counts shouldn't be be main metric, I don't think that deaths per case is that useful either. Cases are far too dependent on testing. Nobody really has a good idea of how many people have had COVID. Either fewer people have it and the death rate is quite high, or more people have it and the spread is more aggressive than we thought. And the problem with deaths, of course, is the underlying factors. Hospitalizations is probably the best metric. That is a solid number that reflects serious cases that are either going to result in death or extended impacts.
  2. "dumpster fire" is accurate Texas closing back down the bars. LOL. That darn lib Greg Abbott.
  3. Tis’ a meme. Back in the Bush Jr. days the Heritage Foundation decided that US citizens weren’t actually in poverty because they weren’t living in mud huts with no running water or electricity. That led to a later graphic on Fox News showing that 99% of “poor” (quotation marks included!) households had a refrigerator. It has been widely used since then to illustrate the out of touch nature of Fox, but it is probably better applied to conservative think tanks.
  4. You are barking up the wrong tree. Humanities degrees have been in decline. Masters degrees represent between 2-4% depending on what you are counting. Your mythical student probably went into “business”. https://www.amacad.org/humanities-indicators/higher-education/bachelors-degrees-humanities#31601
  5. You missed avocado toast. Then you really would have hit the FoxNews/old people Facebook Bingo. You’ll be telling us next that people can’t be poor and have a refrigerator.
  6. You and I aren't all that different in age and experience. I went to UND on a reciprocity agreement,. I worked minimum wage jobs (painting, laying sod, electrical wiring) in the summers. Got my degrees and worked hard and now have a comfortable life. I, however, don't look at the Millenials and Gen Z with derision. I look at the !@#$ sandwich that they've been handed and empathize with them. During their lives college became a commodity, something that you can't just pay off while working minimum wage jobs. They entered the job market during the Boomer and Gen X-fueled massive recession of 2008-2009 and the slow debt hangover recovery. Post-recession, they came into jobs with no security and ratty benefits. God forbid they had a health problem. Now the low end of the totem pole is being kicked in the groin again by a damn pandemic. You have set up the basement-dwelling Millenial/Z as a strawman to make yourself feel better. But you are right in some way. The US is no longer united. We have those that are empathetic towards others, and we have assholes.
  7. This is the one for me too. The 2nd and 3rd goals in quick succession were incredible. I was sitting just inside the blue line on the glass, for Blake's 3rd goal. He sneaked over to the boards on the blue line, received a long pass from our own blue line, and then cut inside and handcuffed the goalie with just an incredible wrister. Have never been in a louder building for a sports event. It was chaos. And as the game was winding down, Spehar, who was already hated, slipped and fell. That precipitated an incredibly loud "Spehar, Spehar, Spehar, sucks sh*t" chant. I had the Gopher telecast recorded, and the announcer simply said "and the fans are getting on Spehar" as you could hear the chant clear-as-day on the telecast.
  8. How come every time a thread goes political, you are all over it?
  9. That is as generic and not related to the state as Hawks are. The comment that kept coming up from one side during the nickname polling was that we shouldn't go with Roughriders because Red River already has that name. This was always an asinine argument. The Hawks is as awful of a name today as it was years ago when it was floated as an option.
  10. It should have been Roughriders, but there are too many reject "grown-ups" that think that high school means anything.
  11. How much do you want to bet that he was "privy" to some not-so-friendly commentary about his assistant? I know I was exposed to more racism while at UND than I have been anywhere else.
  12. GoFundMe for medical bills represents the absolute failure of free market economics in terms of health care.
  13. First thing I thought when I saw a bump of this thread was: "wonder if he's dead". Not a good sign.
  14. This story is one of the main links on espn.com right now.
  15. The one thing that really stood out to me in the 2nd half on defense was the way that the outside rushers were continuously pushed upfield, leaving big holes between the Tackles/Guards. Richmond either took advantage by rushing to those holes or giving the QB clean sightlines. I feel like there wasn't enough emphasis on keeping the lanes clogged, but instead the edge rushers were trying to go outside to get to the QB every time.
  16. Fully concur with this. It was so fun to watch Davis' highly-touted QB just smothered by the defense, and it was LOUD in the Alerus.
  17. I'm sure you'll get deluged with down votes from the dregs of society Trump voters, but here is one upvote.
  18. I really wish they had ponied up additional funding for the creation of logos for the finalists, so that we could have voted on the nickname and logo combination.
  19. Well, that brings up a more fundamental question - why do college sports exist at all?
  20. For those that took AP Calc in HS, Calc II and Calc III were first year classes. Was cruising through Calc II my freshman fall semester, setting the curve for the class, until finals where I focused on other classes and found out too late that I did not quite understand what a Taylor Series was. Talk about a panic attack on a final. Sorry for the OT. I have no good answers for the budget cuts. I generally think that the administration costs are overrated in these discussions and the "arms race" aspect of colleges competing for students by building new facilities and providing excessive amenities is underrated.
  21. Would have been five if the push is further up the back, IMO. Finish them!
