Would have had an even better chance next year if he would have stayed at UND to develop and round out his game one more year. 5 short months ago he was not ready to fill a spot in an NHL lineup, I will be surprised if this goes down as the right decision. I’ve been watching UND hockey for 50 years…9 times out of 10 guys leave too early rather than too late. Past players will tell you the same. Apparently the sting of losing in the fashion that UND did last spring and the chance to capture unfinished business as a senior captain wasn’t a big priority for this young man…perhaps it is truly best for both parties if he moved along to try to better himself.

Set for life? He most likely will be making 75K in the AHL this year…hardly set for life.

Any idea when the new Hugo’s will open downtown? Why are they dragging their feet; was supposed to be open in the spring. The apartments on the upper floors have been occupied since June 1st. Hugo’s doesn’t even make any mention of this new store on their Facebook page or their website…strange lack of marketing for a huge investment.

Played a 3 game series in GF when he was a bantam with Rosemount against GF Aviators two years ago. Big kid with lots of skill...Aviators swept the series and held him to a couple assists that weekend.

I hear ya but remember we are playing football in late April this year...this is highly unusual and we are the only level playing right now. I don’t suspect there will be any future April football playoff games that will collide with May transfer deadlines.

Unfortunately, its bound to become the norm going forward just like free agency in pro sports. Kids are recruited at age 16-18; they develop different and when they become age 19-21 some D1 guys never fulfilled the potential for that level and some D2 guys may have blossomed into a higher level. The new transfer portal rules will be a barometer to balance the talent out again...guys at higher levels that cannot get on the field, court, etc will transfer down a level and guys that are excelling at lower levels will transfer up to a higher level of play. I believe UND football has some D2 guys that transferred that are helping the team this year but a kid that is excelling like Hergel may opt up to a higher level. Like it or not, this will be the norm going forward.

I'm guessing he wouldn't be transferring if there wasn't another "better" opportunity for him already lined up. These new transfer rules are really going to hurt FCS teams as well as lower D1 teams in all other sports. If you excel in FCS football or D1 in a non-power 5 conference you will probably have a chance to go to a power five team or, at least a better program, as a transfer. It's going to be tough for UND, NDSU, etc for all sports. Lone exception would be UND hockey as they are top dog at any level of college and have already snatched up 4 studs from the transfer portal for next year. The rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer and as a result, the level of play between the big dogs and mid level dogs will increasingly become a lot wider.

Grand Forks will be at 50% capacity for hockey starting tomorrow. That means at least 1300 at Purpur so come out and watch some good hockey!

GFRR full schedule...no outdoor game at Cushman but both Central and Red River play an outdoor game at “the lights” in West Fargo on Dec 5th. The usual Bismarck games over Christmas break replaced by Roseau/TRF for both. Both GF teams also play the usual 2 games with EGF and the other non conference game for both is Warroad. EDC and State in GF. River should reach 48 feet which would be top 6 Flood in GF I believe. Levees are 60 feet in GF; flood walls are 63 feet. Theoretically, you wouldn’t have to throw a sand bag within GF unless it approached 60 feet. Even a record flood of more than 54.5 feet would not require sandbagging within city limits of GF as long as it doesn’t near 60 feet which is inconceivable as the RR valley is flat; the river would be 30 miles wide at that level.

He will play in the USHL starting next week and next year with Fargo; we will find out then against real competition if anyone of those big four missed out. Maybe the kid finds Northern Michigan a better fit for him and would rather play there and be a top 6 guy. You never know. Hate to say anyone is missing out or dismiss one school over another without knowing the inside scoop.

Kittson County Central was the #4 seed in Section 8-A and even though they barely beat Mayville a couple times (one game was 9-7) I would like their chances against Hutch

Jamestown would be the #5 seed in the MN - A tournament (Not a joke)...This is an embarrassment to hockey.

Which is why many teams underestimated the attendance to rat hole money from the NCAA; at least that was the case in the old D2 era...not sure if they can pull the wool over the eyes of the NCAA like they used to.
