Except they could have said "It's hostile and abusive as a school icon stop using it" but the NCAA doesn't want anyone to use it.
-
Sadly I think this is correct. It's the same thinking the NCAA gave when they required UND to protect the Fighting Sioux nickname - which means they continue to make and sell a small amount of the "hostile and abusive" logo. The NCAA knew that if they required UND to retire and never use it the logo and name would become rampant.

Time to thin the herd on this site.

The Tribe, The Brave (as in "and the home of the Brave"), the Warriors - they all merit consideration except there will be a liberal someone in the room of decision-makers that says "Nope - too Native American".

Here is a post from Archie Fool Bear's Facebook page: Today some friends contacted me saying President Kelley is making another push to get rid of the Fighting Sioux name. I will continue my quest to make sure that the last of our gifts and ceremonies are honored. We here at Standing Rock were never allowed to vote on this and I'm pretty sure every leader has their personal reasons. But when it comes to our ceremonies, there isn't a tribal motion, or tribal resolution that can UNDO that ceremony. I know I will catch some flack for my continued support of what was done in the past. When our Tribal Leader of the time, along with the descendants of the one of this nations most quoted leader(sitting bull) gave the University the right to use the name and do so with our ceremonies then we should continue to respect that. I hear all the anti name comments, all the personal experiences, and all the hoopla against UND's use of the name and the comment that the ceremony didn't mean a thing, this was said by own tribal leader. But somewhere in all this, the ceremony conducted by Mr. Ed Loon as directed by the Chairman in 1969 should be respected by leaders of today. Our ceremonies either mean something or nothing at all. I'd like to thank those elders who gave me their support to continue the fight to keep the name "Sioux" alive, "Never forget who you are, you are part of the great Sioux Nation don't let anyone take that away we not victims we are the great Sioux nation". With the national push to do away with Indian Names proudly given to schools and other uses for either their Identity or a sports team soon enough, no one will know who the Sioux People are and soon enough some congressional person will take this to that level. So to those who have passed on, those descendants of both Mr Loon and those descendants of Sitting Bull who gave the name back in the 30's, I will continue with my promise to fight for what we did. ..I will continue to fight the good fight.

They will never pick this but you could easily go with "Warrior" and use a Viking Warrior icon. But it won't happen because someone in the room will scream NA. And if it's okay to use a leprican because it is ficticious it should be okay to use a icon similar to "Thor" the Norwegian god of Thunder, ie: Warrior..

Actually it was being shouted in the 70s - right after they stopped holding up copies of a newspaper and pretending to read it while the other team was being introduced.
-
Did they have the problem before or after the NCAA sent letters telling them to have a problem with it?
-
How does it compare to indecent exposure, DUI, minor possession and petition fraud? Really I'd like to know especially with marijuana being legalized in other states (I understand it is illegal in North Dakota.)

It was shared at the Sious Sports social that this team has now won 97 games in their 4 years and that every group of freshmen since 2002 has won at least 100 games in their 4 years at UND. This team has a few more wins in them.

So would that sign be considered policitcal, derogatory or obsene? I am not seeing how it was any of those. It was up for a total of about 5 seconds and security had it down - how was it determined in that short amount of time? Why did the student's deserve to be escorted from the building? Was the reason for the sign Kelly's stance on the nickname or do student's have other issues with him?

NORTH DAKOTA vs. St. Cloud State - SENIOR WEEKEND
CMSioux replied to AZSIOUX's topic in Men's Hockey
Love the reference to getting chills when the home crowd shouts "Sioux" at the end of the national anthem - wonder how long that tradition will hold with the changing of the name? It would be nice to see similar effort put into regular programs like this for the football and basketball teams - it helps create a bond between the teams and the fans and would probably help attendance. -
We once had a fantasy league where you earned points for getting posted quoted on Bison-swille - perhaps we can start a new league based on earning points in this thread.

UND Football Memory Lane: Early 2000s UND football
CMSioux replied to UND-FB-FAN's topic in Football
Sitting behind Bi-zon fans at the 2003 game - listening to them crow about how no UND player would see the field on their team - watching their crushed faces after Digger's tackle. -
I agree that is not what I would consider a bright spot - however there are things to enjoy about the season - if you are willing to look for them.
-
Sarcasm? If not stop looking for bright spots to the season....negative postings only are welcome here...stick to the topic...you're either like minded here or you don't have a clue. There's no room for optimism here - you're gonna get trashed.

Bump - hoping to make it a Sioux-per Saturday with my daughter - BBall then hockey with a grinder inbetween.

I just meant I wasn't willing to give up any points this weekend to help you get there . -
NORTH DAKOTA vs. St. Cloud State - SENIOR WEEKEND
CMSioux replied to AZSIOUX's topic in Men's Hockey
It would be great to have the huskies at the Final Five - (but not at the expense of the Sioux). SCSU fans can help rowdy it up. St. Cloud has done well in GF and UND knows it. -
Hoopster - I'm on your side as far as looking for positives - it's a game played by 18-21 year old student athletes - there are bright spots in every season - thanks for seeing them.
-
Looking for two for Saturday night against St. Cloud. Thanks

We have a name and you'll be seeing it plenty from your couch as you watch the Frozen Four. Really you come here to talk hockey and you start out with smack - that's not a very good reflection on your maturity or intelligence.
-
Yah they should cancel the trip.
-
Looking at the box score stats - how do they lose this one by 10? We out rebounded them, shot percentages were close, turnovers low, free throws - still an issue at 66%.

Just a reminder, hidden deep within the NCAA comments during the peak of the discussion was the comment that the NCAA needed the two "Tribal Councils" to approve the nickname. The NCAA basically alluded that the SL vote that had been taken did not meet their criteria of a "Tribal Council" vote - they didn't have to play that card because the SR never voted. The cards were stacked against the name in so many ways.
