  1. Pretty much each new group of freshmen on campus will drive the Sioux name further into retirement.
  2. Probably the best damn advertising their money wouldn't have to buy. I don't see Snyder changing the name. Both the team and the NFL have too much invested in it.
  3. The Ag Commissioner is probably seen as more likely to be a proxy of the legislature than an AG or Secretary of State. I'm amazed that the legislature seems so insecure that it feels the need to keep picking at the state constitution.
  4. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/sports/ncaafootball/calls-for-reform-grow-louder-for-ncaa-and-mark-emmert.html?ref=sports&pagewanted=all In the past month, the N.C.A.A. and its president, Mark Emmert, have been sued, criticized and ridiculed — and more than usual. They were embarrassed by admitted mistakes in a high-profile investigation. Their critics, growing louder and in number, included a governor, state senators, lawyers, academics and university presidents. Those who study the N.C.A.A. believe this time period could become a tipping point for significant reform. Lanter said a class-action lawsuit, which questions how the N.C.A.A. profits from the likeness of its athletes even after they are no longer amateurs, was the most likely impetus for major change. “That would dramatically impact college athletics,” he said. “The amount of money it would have to pay out would shake the N.C.A.A. to its core.”
  5. No state ever has "too much money". What they do with it is another matter. I remember in the past NoDak has had problems making its budget. NoDak would be wise to use its largess to diversify its economy. It's still an older population and still too dependent on agribusiness and energy. Oil strikes are temporary bumps. The companies' workers are largely transient and their employers' interests in the state only extend to their ability to extract oil at the lowest cost. Once the margins shrink, they'll start to leave. And no major oil company is going to move from Texas or Oklahoma to Dickinson or Bismarck. Carlson is a bumbling idiot who only cares about his own political "career". He probably deserves a recall election more than anybody in recent memory.
  6. His constituents should be ashamed of themselves.
  7. Beer.
  8. Considering the cloud Ralph was under for his Nazi memorabilia collections and some parties that still persists in some quarters to this day, I don't think the behavior of those little assclowns is being blown out of proportion. The last thing REA and UND need is to be further painted by the actions of some morons. Frankly, if I ran REA, I'd bar them for life.

  10. Don't make fun of their homecoming queen.
  11. I believe the Iowa photocops are triggered at 11 mph over, at least around Des Moines. However, some of the small town cops aren't so lenient.
  12. In spite of its own faults and foibles, the NC$$ has still managed to accuse Miami of LOIC. I wonder if Emmert walks on water too ... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-20/miami-athletics-accused-of-lack-of-control-by-ncaa-espn-reports.html
  13. Sioux City's in Iowa, and we do have hefty income taxes too. As well, we have "photocops" at stop lights and on certain highways. It's a big money grab for local communities, and Sioux City is among the worst.
  14. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/19/sports/ncaa-ousts-julie-roe-lach-as-vice-president-of-enforcement.html?hp The NC$$ fired their enforcement chief. Finally.
  15. In case you need inspiration. As a practical matter, even though I'm no trademark expert, I doubt UND would pursue a trademark claim against somebody whose calendar featured trademarked UND/Sioux gear. It's another story if you made those jerseys without a license.
  16. The fact the wannabe lawyer used the term "blasphemous" in an oral argument demonstrates an inherent weakness in their approach. But at least the kid gets some good experience.
  17. Maybe this would be better. http://www.theonion.com/articles/new-atlanta-braves-logo-features-gruesome-depictio,31284/

    NCAA

As good as place as any ... An interesting analysis on how the NC$$ might be facing its own little Waterloo in the Ed O'Bannon antitrust case. http://www.grantland...obannon-vs-ncaa This is the one they can't stop. There's no negotiating a way out. There are no teenagers to intimidate, no coaches to knuckle, no administrators to cajole, no probation to be levied. The athletes have found a fair and level field on which to contest the NCAA's control over their lives, and the stakes are as high as they can be. And the public has started to turn around on the issue, too. For the NCAA to survive in its current form, it has to win this lawsuit or get the lawsuit dismissed. There's no third alternative. The NCAA can't settle and then go back to the status quo ante. It can't pay off O'Bannon and Russell and Robertson and all the rest of them, and then start business as usual again as regards Cody Zeller or Kenny Boynton. If it loses the lawsuit, the effect on the NCAA's financial structure would be profound.
  19. Agree. Some "experts" are already suggesting that the easy oil has already been extracted in some areas of the Bakken.
  20. There are none since it's a full-service restaurant.
  21. Cool. If GF ever gets a Hooters, it will be a true "destination spot".
  22. Think it was the 2000 campaign.
  23. Heh. My fondest memory of Spehar was when Commodore checked him into a bench at the Target Center and all you saw of him was two skates hanging over the boards. As for Earl, I think his uniform was made by Speedo.
  24. I recall he was really beside himself and "his sources" when ZPar committed to UND. I think he also sent Lou and Glen on their "excellent adventure".
