An interesting article about the downsides of success in a young athlete. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/26/sports/swimmer-dagny-knutson-retires-again-seeking-normalcy.html?ref=sports&pagewanted=all

The school and state have already made the decision to move on. This fight only conerns the NC$$ and SL. Like the Vikings winning a Super Bowl, SL might win rights to the moniker, but I don't see how they could force UND to accept that "gift" unless the NC$$ also agreed to the move. However, I doubt, even if all of the legal stars aligned as some would like, UND will ever be called the "Fighting Sioux" again.

“relying instead on a barrage of unmeritorious claims regarding pleading, standing and statutes of limitation.” Yeah, those pesky legal "technicalities" that underpin the rules of the courts. Moron.

Stafford had a nice little scrap with Hartnell in the Sabres' win today.

I didn't want to start another thread, and it seems like this story can fit well here. Some of the numbers are pretty sobering. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/17/education/top-public-colleges-in-ncaa-favor-sports-over-academics.html?ref=us&_r=0

Spirit Lake Tribe Files Appeal In Lawsuit Against The NCAA
ScottM replied to Goon's topic in UND Nickname
Considering their track record over the years, and the nearly laughable "attorneys" representing SL, the NC$$ lawyers have every right to personify arrogance. And if there is a remand there will be a trial, a verdict and the requisite appeals. By the time that plays out over 4-5 years, the "the Fighting Sioux" will be a hazy recollection and UND will probably have a new moniker and nickname. UND's fight is over. Whatever happens between SL and the NC$$ is nothing but a pathetic circus. -
Spirit Lake Tribe Files Appeal In Lawsuit Against The NCAA

Doubtful. Appellate courts have a lower threshold than the Supreme Court. IMHO the NC$$ might like this venue since a favorable ruling might also ice the case Pennsylvania is pursuing, e.g., antitrust. Even a result favorable to SL would probably not alter the course the state and UND have pursued. -
By his "logic", UND should be winning Titles hand over fist in no time ...
-
But then the hometown fans can't see their players against the ice!!!
-
I recall, somewhat, the 2000 game against Wisconsin. Some of the concession stands in theTarget Center ran out of beer. I think TC is a good venue, but agree that it's not really a good hockey venue. I believe the ice was pretty crappy most of the time.

While no fan of the Golden Domers (Chokers?) ND does have a brand that creates a lot of network/advertiser interest. They're still getting lift from the days of Knute, Ara, Dan and Lou, even though they really haven't done anything in over a decade. But the Tide effectively showed the world that "the Emperor has no clothes". However, they'll still be hyped in the off-season and into next season and NBC will experience its usual bumps in ratings when they play Navy, USC, etc.
-
Nah, Bettman and Co. need every dime they muster after paying back the networks and cable carriers for the missed season. Plus they need to support the teams that are always losing money through their own financial mismanagement, including the Wild. And that was even before they signed Parise and Suter. The irony being that Leipold was one of the hardliners whining about player comp in the latest lockout. http://www.forbes.com/teams/minnesota-wild/ I'm fairly certain Gary will have a telethon or perhaps a bake sale to maintain the status quo of grousing about money, and then move to lockout rumbling in a few years.

And "The Four Horsemen" saddle up ...
-
Agreed. But after the way the players felt "mistreated" in the past, I suppose they felt they needed a tougher driver and Fehr is a Samuel Gompers/Jimmy Hoffa union-type. Not really sympathetic to either side at this point. All I know is the NHL has more work to do than worrying about entry-level salaries and player contract terms if it hopes to to thrive in the future. Mafia Man's wish list is similar to mine, although I'd push for a deeper contraction of teams.
-
One man's perspective on the NHL. http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/8817964/nhl-lockout-but-damage-done-irreparable
-
It'll be interesting to see how many teams come close to folding or go into BK in that timeframe. I believe that about 10 teams are already bleeding money, including the Wild and its new Parise-Suter obligations.
-
Big deal. As long as the NHL under Gary "Three Lockouts and Counting" Bettman keeps its current business model they'll be back at in another few years. The NHL will never have the prominence as the other major sports in the US and the owners fail to grasp that fact and continue to subsidize teams in rotten hockey markets.
-
There was a consolidation of North and South Dakota to eliminate redundancies on the map.
-
I have to agree. If we get everybody on this board to contribute $5, we can probably get our own Bowl too. I recall reading most schools actually lose money by going to these minor bowls when they factor in travel, lodging, etc.

State of Pennsylvania sues NCAA over Penn State Sanctions
ScottM replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in NCAA News
Right now, I'd bet their suit will have as much traction as UND's 2005 litigation. The problem being that Penn State is a voluntary member of the same organization as the one being accused of civil anti-trust violations. The only possible sliver of hope is that the NC$$ may tick off Pennsylvania's congressional delegation enough that they investigate on their own. -
Or you could try stick handling drills with a golf ball on the ice like we used to.
-
Careful now. Kill will hear that and get carted off the field again ...
