Kind of like how the students pressured the University to keep the Sioux name and logo? We saw how that worked out for them
-
Wait, what? Please link the article. The only thing in the GF Herald was an article claiming the exact opposite. Including this quote about some of the logos that are floating about: From this article: http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/3880986-final-und-nickname-vote-begin-no-word-choosing-logo Unless your talking about this quote from the UND Student body President: Which is nothing but hopeful speculation on his part.

UND will not have a logo that has anything that resembles anything Native American. That's the only certainty in this whole nickname debate. The Blackhawk logo will never be purchased by UND...
-
It's not a conspiracy. As I said, pay attention to comments on facebook...there is a percentage, large or small, that are under the impression that logo will/could be UND's new logo, I tend to think it's a smaller percentage, but it does exist. I have yet to see any social media posts or have friends/family express what you claim, but yes, there could be some of those folks out there.
-
If anyone were to look at comments on social media or ask around, they would obviously see that the "Black Hawk" logo had an effect on how people chose to vote. How much of an effect will never be known...could be as little as <1% or quite a bit more. Either way, it's evident that there is a percentage of FH voters that are basing their vote on that logo.
-
I would guess a large majority are students and faculty of UND.
-
I agree. As a Rough Rider voter, I think this is really reaching a bit. As long as the logo isn't the infamous black hawk logo that's floating around, there will be no issues with UND being the Fighting...well at least the Hawks as we may have to lose the Fighting at some point. E

You also forgot that North Dakota is known as the Peace Garden State so people should be encouraged to vote for "Peaceful" Hawks as a nod to the official/unofficial state name...
-
My conspiracy theory is that Fighting will eventually be removed. Whenever UND PA announcers say Fighting Hawks, I'm guessing the majority of fans will yell Sioux. Thus leading to complaints to the school and NCAA if need be, ultimately resulting in UND dropping the "Fighting" part. Either that or the group that wants to end bullying will make schools drop hostile adjectives from sports teams...

I don't necessarily agree with this. If you look at the definition of a Rough Rider: Looks like it's a person (meaning male or female) who rides horses. rough·rid·er ˈrəfˌrīdər/nounNORTH AMERICANplural noun: rough-riders; plural noun: rough ridersa person who breaks in or can ride unbroken horses.a person who rides horses a lot.a member of the cavalry unit in which Theodore Roosevelt fought during the Spanish-American War.noun: Rough Rider; plural noun: Rough Riders Would people be more apt to support Rough Riders if UND chose not to go with ties to Teddy?

In reading comments on facebook and visiting with people in GF, whether in the community or at UND games, it's pretty obvious there is a large portion of "uneducated" voters. The most common response I get to voting for Fighting Hawks has to do with the "blackhawk" logo floating around and the ability still yell "Fighting Sioux" instead of Fighting Hawks. Granted, it's a pretty small sample, but there really are some people who have no clue about the whole nickname fiasco...heck, many still think we can bring the Fighting Sioux name back...
-
So how long until UND drops the "Fighting" and goes with just Hawks or a different adjective?

Can the new stadium speculation posts be moved to the right thread. There have been a few "new stadium" threads speculating about donors giving to the football program over the last 10 years...

I was giving an example of how it shouldn't be too difficult to tell which Rough Rider team is playing based on context. Not necessarily pointed at your jersey comment but at people who say it will be confusing having two Rough Rider teams in the same media market.

I would hope most any North Dakota sports fan could figure out, by the title of the article, that it wasn't UND playing Bismarck in the state championship.,.

An alum, spouse and a child who may be a current UND student. Or a UND Alum whose parents are also alums. Not too difficult to come up with various scenarios...I had two, myself and my dads who didn't care to vote. -
Sorry, was trying to quote SWSioiuxMN's post. Really dislike the quote function on here..

And the fact that the don't realize that Kelley prefers the Hawks.

Sioux was an "old timer's name" and they don't have a problem with that. When I think of a University, I think of traditions and history. Some of the most popular apparel people wear have a "throw back" appearance to them. Even as a University student, I appreciated the "old Sioux logos" or older/traditional looking apparel as opposed to the "newer looking" apparel. As an example, I much prefer the horizontal stripes on the hockey jersey than the "slant" stripes they used to have.

It was my understanding the Students lobbied for the center ice seats. Maybe so they could be by the penalty box? Maybe because it was that way at the old Ralph? Don't really know for sure. I do agree students should be behind the opposing goalie for two periods so they can heckle him. -
I wish those voting for Fighting Hawks would recognize this...unless you truly like the name. Everyone says the consultants have done a horrible job, guess it depends on whose perspective your looking at. It appears as though the consultants got us to do exactly what they wanted to do, which was adopt a non-controversial nickname (aka Some variation of Hawk).
-
I think the consultants and some UND Admins are getting exactly what they wanted...an inoffensive, bland, generic nickname. It was stated early on that the consultants, along with the head of the committee were pushing for a variation of a Hawk. Lo and behold, it looks like they've done their job just fine...

Personally, I prefer Nodaks over Fighting Hawks with Rough Riders being my first choice. Rough riders is also unique if you are looking at other NCAA schools. I just hope that Kelley and the UND Administration come to their senses and either eliminates Nodaks, or adds another round of voting. I don't see the new nickname, regardless of what is chosen, having much chance to be accepted without a "majority" of those that choose to vote.
