  1. A majority is greater than 50% On this site, Roughriders has the plurality of the vote. A plurality is the most votes, but not a majority of votes.
  2. Looking at this site, about 20% of votes cast voted that option. If 20% is a majority, I need to relearn the definition of 'majority'.
  3. Seems to be foretelling ... http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_e41ee4aa-1157-11e5-8031-3f9d35253c76.html
  4. Caufield is credited for getting Mario Lemieux back in shape after his time away. If Caufield (one game) is on the Cup wall, I'd call that precedent: Wear the jersey for one game, you qualify.
  5. You gonna crash the net with her in goal?
  6. You, as a Minnesotan, would love that. You'd be calling us "Minnesota wannabes". Minnesota can keeps its state motto and words from its state flag of off North Dakota.
  7. We ride. Ride on. Saddle up.
  8. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3739433-und-nickname-committee-starts-cutting-names
  9. In a recent Herald article the consultant mentioned (one word) Roughriders would be easier to trademark.
  10. That's what she said.
  11. I don't really exist. I'm just like Tony Stark's "JARVIS" artificial intelligence in the Avengers films.
  12. Walker wore 10; now he wears 2. Depending on how you look at it, he's wearing the same value. "There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't." I wonder if he chose 10 for that reason (because he wanted value = 2); if he did, a tip of the cap to him!
  13. They're prepping for the "couldn't come up with anything original ... stole idea from the FM baseball team" shtick.
  14. When I've heard "Nodaks" used it's by non-North Dakotans and it's used as a not-so-positive term, like bumpkins, rednecks, hicks, wasicu*, or gaijin**. *Friends of BJ Rainbow and Erich Longie reading this: Yeah, you know you use that Lakota term in a not so endearingly tone. Shame on you. **Bet you didn't know I know a little Japanese too
  15. Wasn't sure what you meant until I read the accountant's definition of the phrase: Don't say "North Dakota", say "no nickname", because the underlying reality is no nickname. Saying "North Dakota" is hiding the true intent (keep on saying the old nickname).
  16. So not Section 8, but still "hockey rich area".
  17. Let's break the 15 into categories: "Duckies, bunnies, rainbows, and unicorns" - Sundogs, Pride "Intangible nouns" - Spirit, Force, Blaze, Fighting Green, Nodaks "Raptor" - Green Hawks, Fighting Hawks, Thunder Hawks "Geography/Astronomy" - North Dakota, North Stars "People" - Cavalry, Explorers, Roughriders
  18. So a northern Minnesotan (Section 8?) knew the name of a school that is known for HS hockey in ND. A hockey rich area knew a strong neighboring hockey team's name. Not surprised. But I'll bet you they can't name Fargo North and Wahpeton.
  19. Tim Raines and Gary Carter rule!
  20. First, please don't say "North Dakota". Please say "no nickname", because that's what it is. Semantics? Maybe. But "North Dakota" can not be the nickname as "Dakota" is a tribal name and open to sanction. A blank space (no nickname) is not a tribal name. (It's also not all that marketable, but that's for another day.) Secondly, we've heard some theories on why "North Dakota" is on that list. As dagies said, "Because if (Kelley) came out right now and said "I've checked with the NCAA and they said selecting no nickname would satisfy the agreement" there would be such a groundswell that it would destroy the process of selecting an actual nickname." That's one theory. An alternate theory of why no statement would be that by eliminating the no nickname option some quarters would be up in arms that the NCAA is sticking it to UND and forcing UND into something, again.
  21. I agree with your last sentence. The only problem? The NCAA general assembly has since voted to give the NCAA executive committee vast and far reaching powers to rule (I won't even call it govern) in matters of this nature. Today's non-existent rules are tomorrow's executive committee arbitrary and capricious edicts.
  22. I read Chewey's past opinions about how the Spirit Lake lawsuit was going to win in Federal court over the NCAA. I actually attended sessions in Judge Ralph Erickson's courtroom. I saw how the NCAA attorneys and how a Federal judge views these matters, first hand. Given that track record, I temper my belief in Chewey's opinions posted here.
  23. Your last "yes", to "By not selecting a new name and being "North Dakota" UND can still unofficially be known as the Fighting Sioux?" is my concern. I believe (opinion alert) that the NCAA will come back at UND with the word "new" from the settlement agreement and say "nothing" is not "new" and stick it to us ... again. I'm not willing to go down this fiasco path again.
  24. That article has some phrases that need mention here:
  25. How long until "Green Hawks" becomes "Green Horns". That's why. And that's why you choose a nickname. You choose a nickname. You choose a nickname (and a blank is not a nickname).
