  1. You say "preserving"; others say "commemorating".
  2. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
  3. And as darrell hinted at (somewhere around here), we're five years behind where we should be on that timeline.
  4. I'm thinking some of those changed because of Section 2.f (and Schedule A) of the Settlement Agreement. But, the old logo had to go from some of those spaces per the agreement. And, since there's nothing new, like a new nickname and logo, to fill the void the interlocking "ND" is all they had other than a big old VOID (which is what we do have).
  5. The Riders gathered in the southwest, but North Dakota cowboys (e.g. Jesse Langdon*) were in the group. "They gathered a diverse bunch of men consisting of cowboys, gold or mining prospectors, hunters, gamblers, Native Americans and college boys; all of whom were able-bodied and capable on horseback and in shooting." If they didn't take anybody from anywhere who met their needs, how'd a Harvard educated New Yorker end up as a colonel in the unit? *Roosevelt made sure Langdon got into the unit. "Langdon, born 1881 in what is now North Dakota, "hoboed" his way to Washington, D.C., and called on Roosevelt at the Navy Department, reminding him that his father, a veterinarian, had treated Roosevelt's cattle at his Dakota ranch during his ranching days. Roosevelt arranged a railroad ticket for him to San Antonio, where Langdon enlisted in the Rough Riders at age 16. He was the last surviving member of the regiment and the only one to attend the final two reunions, in 1967 and 1968. He died June 29, 1975 at the age of 94, ..."
  6. Those did all they could. You know which two "neighbors" didn't send simple letters to Indianapolis. Imagine if the neighbor's had said to the NCAA, "Hey, thanks for the offer of help, but we will settle this in house back here in ND amongst ourselves so we're OK with it for now. We'll call you when we need you." The "neighbors" would have the State and UND by the ... Imagine what they could get out of Bismarck and UND in that scenario. They missed it.
  7. Can only speak for myself: I have not worn the logo or spoken that word to reference UND Athletics since it was retired. I have a $400 Brien logo leather jacket that is just taking up space on a hanger. Why? We asked two neighbors for simple help. They didn't come through for me. Ignore me? Ignore you. Meh. So much for them.
  8. An oversimplification of the view of the "no nickname" and "irreplaceable" viewpoint. We had a Lamborghini. It was awesome. There were a couple Ferrari around, but we had the only Lamborghini. Then the DOT said, "No more Lamborghini on the streets." The Ferrari were allowed to stay, along with all the Fords and Chevys. Worse? We had nothing to drive for quite a while ... and the Lamborghini is still in the garage, but we can't drive it*. And I'm worried that even if we get a Jaguar F-Type V8 R** it will still feel like a Yugo because the Lamborghini will always be in the garage. The problem with that viewpoint? No wheels; we walk. *Although some folks are still revvin' it up in the garage. ** Feel free to donate to my F-Type R, in racing green of course, fund at any time.
  9. Source: http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3734308-chester-fritz-library-forum-gets-heated And there's what's wrong with the side I like to call the Jeanotte-heads: Removing that name will not change peoples' feelings toward it, good or bad. Closed circuit to Mr. Rainbow: BJ, buddy, pal, were you really trying to change someone's feelings about something? That's depressing to believe that you thought you could do that. Why? Because you know no one will ever change your feelings on the matter either.
  10. Library situation: http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3734308-chester-fritz-library-forum-gets-heated
  11. It was the topic of conversation on NHL Radio (XM 218) this morning when Denny Potvin was on with their morning guys. Yeah, I was a little surprised by it.
  12. So the only two schools with legitimate nicknames in a North Dakota context are Wahpeton and Larimore?
  13. So is Red River HS the "Roughriders" because they are kids from Las Cruses and Tempe or because that's the name given to people who follow Teddy Roosevelt's lead? You know Teddy: North Dakota's greatest advocate; the New Yorker who said he wouldn't have been a US President if not for his time in North Dakota; Nobel Prize winner, Congressional Medal of Honor winner.
  14. I don't think Babcock goes to a young team in the rebuilding process (i.e. Edmonton). The one I just heard that almost makes sense: If Anaheim doesn't advance this year ...
  15. Any truth to the rumor that Mike Babcock just finished setting forms from blue line to blue line and has twelve yards of ready mix on order for 7 pm delivery?
  16. ... and if we had the 1983 Washington Redskins offensive line we'd have some really old offensive linemen. "Rome was not built in a day."
  17. You're saying he's better than Patrick Kane, Steve Stamkos, John Tavares; better than everyone since Crosby (and Ovechkin the year before that). He's good, but until he's in the NHL he's not better than Kane, Stamkos, and Tavares. But I can live with better than everyone after (starting with Taylor/Tyler). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_first_overall_NHL_draft_picks
  18. I'm not greedy. I'll take anyone on this list.
  19. Actually, Minnesota is "The Gopher State".
  20. Minnesota's nickname doesn't come from North Dakota but from a cartoon depicting corruption in their legislature.
  21. But I also see the WCHA producing one or two teams annually that can make some post-season noise. This year's were MSU-PurpleCow and Michigan Tech.
  22. The Oilers pick first, thus is why I said ... McDavid is the top available player in this draft. That's not disrespecting Eichel; it's reality.
  23. Personally, I'd be wholly against using a rival state's motto as our University's nickname. We can do far better.
  24. Under the settlement agreement UND must maintain its trademark rights to the retired name and logo. As such, UND must use them in commerce at some periodicity. So, there will be some (> $0) coming in from the retired name and logo.
  25. Not a potential recruit by any means, but what a playoff series (future Edmonton Oiler Connor McDavid) is having: 13 points in 4 games.
