This felt like the refs were trying to make sure Michigan State would win.

Michigan State wins 4-2. Notre Dame played pretty well. They aren't good but their work ethic is a lot better now. Interested to see what Sheahan builds with good recruits coming in next year and the year after

Sioux played Sparty in 1987 at Joe Louis Arena for the NCAA championship.  Big advantage for State having all their fans in the building but it didn't matter as the Circus went up 3-0 to start the game and they pretty much traded goals after that.  Maybe all that green in the crowd inspired UND...no matter, that team was a WAGON all year and pretty much crushed everybody.  Should have went to that game but was just a poor college student so stayed in Forks and watched the game in some girls dorm room that had a nice sized color tv.

Went to that Frozen Four.  Perfect weekend. UND wins Thursday (easy win over Harvard); Gophers lose Friday; UND wins Saturday.  The most lopsided 5-3 win ever.  

Had a great conversation with Mickey Krampotich that weekend.  He talked about the high expectations that come with wearing #8, reciting some excellent players that wore the number.

Was my second trip to Detroit for a FF (1979 was the first), and a much better outcome.

I don’t recall who covered college hockey at the Pioneer Press at that time, but I remember him writing in the lead-up to the FF that he couldn’t see anyone beating the Sioux, whether they got a lucky goal or two or not.  Found a small bar in Onalaska, WI that carried the game.   You’d think Badger fans would have been pulling for MSU, but that wasn’t the case.   Being a fan from afar was very different in those pre-internet days.  Newspaper sports sections were important.

"It is hard," said Whittet of the current environment in college hockey. "Some of the other stuff that other teams can do, the Ivy league teams cannot. It is a little bit of a battle for us. That is not to make excuses, but the landscape is ever-changing. Amateur hockey is a farce, it isn't amateur hockey anymore. It is minor pro sports, professional sports and players getting paid."

Whittet of course had many challenges over the years. There probably could have been some better years, but the transfer bug bit hard. Whittet has never been one to shy away from an opinion on the lack of loyalty in today's hockey and went away saying the same things he has for years.

"I don't think it is a good thing that the loyalty (has gone away), so has the beauty of going to a school for four years and the beauty of graduating with your class," Whittet said. "If you don't feel the sense of home and you're just a hired gun, if you move from place to place, do those places mean what Brown means to me or what a college would mean to anyone else?

"Everyone just seems to be in a rush these days to find the next best thing, your foot is always out the door and I personally don't like that. I get frustrated about it and I think it is a very hard environment for me because I am old school. I appreciate the days, not too long ago I might add, that you could develop a team, a culture and you instill the right values in kids. Sometimes the grass isn't greener elsewhere."

I was pretty young then, and I just thought that the ‘87 team was a normal Sioux hockey team. Dominate everyone, 100-point scorers, NHL-caliber goalie, brilliant coach, national championship? I guess that’s just how we do things in Grand Forks. Little did I know that that team was exceptional even by UND’s high standards. We were spoiled.

We were.   Being old doesn’t make one wiser—certainly not smarter.  But having been an adult Sioux fan over a period of time spanning 6 different head coaches does give a person perspective.

I was there as well along with 1997 in Milwaukee and 2001 in Providence. There must have been 18,000 Michigan State fans all wearing green. Hrkac and Joyce dominated.

Prime memory from the 1987 trip.  The concourse during the first intermission was packed but quiet.  Sparty was in shock.

Miami moved their game up to 530 pm to accommodate their undefeated basketball team's game allowing students to attend both. Nice bridge between Olympic hockey and UND hockey this afternoon.

I was in Onalaska just a few days ago! They have the nearest Raising Canes
