2015 they won the state championship.  Fun fact, they finished 3rd in the WDA tournament that year.  They had to beat Jamestown on Saturday in Bismarck to even get there.  They also got an extremely good draw that year.  Devils Lake upset Red River in the EDC tournament, so Minot played them first round, then they played #4 EDC seed South/Shanley who was ahead in the third period before a kid took a 5 minute major and Minot scored twice on the major penalty.  In the championship they just withstood Central and got a fantastic goaltending performance to win 2-1.

As a Minot alum I've seen a lot of things that have went terribly wrong for the magi in their state tournament runs, but that year things just magically fell into place.  Was also the first year the state tournament was held at Scheels Arena.  I think that helped as well.

Surprisingly, Devils Lake beat Minot twice during the regular season that year, but lost to them 2-1 in OT in the first round of the state tourney.

If Devils Lake would've beat Minot that year I think they had a great chance to win with Kurtz in net.

He gave them a chance in almost every game, hence their wins over Red River, Minot and others.  For some reason, Devils Lake seems to produce good goaltenders fairly consistently.

The GFC win was the most impressive of all I think. I remember being shocked seeing Minot get that far let alone winning it all. Because I didnt follow the 2nd half of the season much and I recalled DL beating them to win the Roseau tournament and not much after that. There have been so many Minot teams that were better than that team, but like you said, everything just fell perfectly into place for them that season for whatever reason. And they had a guy like Flom to score just enough of those big goals needed and their goalie to keep them in it. That's when the west won back to back titles for the first time ever.

Thought I'd share this with you since Charlie was former head coach of the Cando Cubs back in the day. He was my bantam coach from '74-'76

From our hockey board written by Matt Stockert

It is with a heavy heart that we mourn in the loss of a fellow board member, coach and one who was instrumental in helping Jamestown Hockey move forward. Charlie ”Buzzy” Skeel passed away this morning in Florida. Originally from Jamestown, Charlie played hockey for the local youth program and high school program at thr time and after his playing days were over, helped the youth programs in both Cando, North Dakota and Jamestown, North Dakota. When it came to kids playing the game of hockey, Charlie was always there to take an interest in it. In 2018 Charlie was inducted into the North Dakota Amateur Hockey Association for his countless hours of service in the community based hockey programming world. Please take a moment and leave a stick out on the doorstep in rememberance of a great man! Charlie will be greatly missed by many and the Jamestown Hockey family sends their thoughts and prayers toi the entire Skeel family, and friends!🙏

As a fan I love the Fargo setup.  Also, the atmosphere is way better.

The players used to and likely still do unanimously prefer the Ralph for obvious reasons. Although the smaller atmosphere has probably changed a few of their minds, especially if they have already gotten to experience playing in the Ralph before.

Is there consensus that the state tournament should be held in Grand Forks?

Not at all.

The reality is the Scheels/Farmers setup is considerably better for the state tourney. Especially when Boys and Girls are at the same time.

Hosting State tournament games on the Olympic sheet is not ideal at all....

but playing games off site at Eagles Arena like they are doing this year is a pathetic insult to the kids who busted their careers to make it to "state"

Destroys the experience for players and fans.

Insulting and lazy solution.

Scheels arena beats the Ralph for state hockey.  Love the Ralph, but the empty cathedral feeling for all games at REA just isn't good for a state tournament atmosphere.

I think Minot should get a turn hosting the boys.  I hear arguments that it isn't big enough, but attending the past few state tournaments I think attendance has dropped to the point where it's a viable option.

Minot would easily be able to host but attendance would also be way down - numbers wise.  They did the girls there 2 years ago and it was a ghost town except for when Minot played.

Fargo flat out has the best setup going.

How many can fit into Pepsi Arena in Minot?  It would need to hold 5 or 6k to host would be my guess.

Was girls state attendance way down because of the location, or was it just because it was solo for the first time and didn't have default fans from the boys? I think the answer is the latter.

Since Minot, GF and Fargo all have setups that work, I think for the purpose of spreading the wealth, and for the betterment of the game within the state, it would be best to rotate between the 3 each year and always have boys and girls in separate locations. I know Fargoians believe they're the center of the universe, but the fact is they're in a far corner of the state and it's logistically unattractive to many cities/teams. We all know Fargo would love to capture all the state tournaments and all big tournaments in general, but I think a hockey town like Minot would be a great host even for the boys, and we all know the dream of playing in the Ralph will always keep GF as the other top option despite their 2nd rink drawback. With that said, due to the dying breed of olympic ice, has there been talk of switching the ralph practice ice to the normal size yet?

Looks like only about 2,000 for actual seating capacity so only a few hundred more for standing. But what have the state championship boys attendances been in recent years? Can't be much more than that I wouldnt think. Maybe some exclusiveness and a barn packed to the brims would be the best atmosphere yet.

Just watched a little bit of the 05 Championship game between RR and GFC. Would be fun to get the Ralph packed liked that for the kids now a days.

I remember that game. That one and when GPR was playing a few years before that, I distinctly remember the cheerleaders having to go up to the upper deck and remove the giant posters to free up more seats as people were pouring in. If attendance for state games ever spikes back up, I think the Ralph in GF will be the one and only option for the state hockey tournament at least for boys, but as of right now I don't forsee that happening anytime soon as attendance is hurting across all sports at all levels across the country.
