Duncan and Watkins were #1 stars for their respective teams last night, SA winning while Vernon gets a tie. Meanwhile Surrey gets beat and Kozek is kept off the score sheet.

Duncan's 5 point night and Watkins 2 third period goals move them up the BCHL scoring leaders list while Kozek moves down a few.

Kozek back up to tied for #5 in the scoring leaders' list with a goal and assist in Surrey's 3-2 Sunday win.

Just checking in with the BCHL over the weekend, and it looks like the kids are alright.

Kozek's team won 3-2; he was 1-0-1 with the GWG. They won 6-3 the next night, with Kozek at 1-3-4.

Duncan was 1-1-2 in a 3-2 loss. Then, although he was scoreless in a 4-1 win, he must have been doing something right as he was named the game's #2 star.

Watkins was 0-1-1 in a 3-3 tie, then scored Vernon's only goal in a 2-1 loss.

There's not much to note in the USHL, as UND currently has just one recruit there (Miller) and he plays for a team (Green Bay) that has elected to not score this year.

Green Bay took the momentum from its 3-1 victory a week ago Friday and ran off consecutive losses by scores of 6-0, 5-0 and 4-0. The trend is positive, though, as in just four more games they will have the opponent down to zero goals as well.

I'm not sure what kind of judgement you can make on Miller based on his performance with this team, but this is at least encouraging: In his first 7 games, he was 0-0-0. In his next 7, he was 5-2-7. In the next 4 games (the 4 described above), he was again 0-0-0, but when the whole team only scored 3 goals in that span, it's hard to hold it against him.

FWIW, Wheeler's line after 8 games was 6-4-10. In the last 10 games, he's 1-3-4. Really, the only conclusion one can reach right now is that Green Bay is really bad. I'm sure Gretzky got it close to right and Wheeler will be a stud. I'm also hopeful that Hakstol's description of Miller (great hands, deadly around the net) will prove true at the next level. This team could use a little dose of "deadly around the net."

Forum article about Moorhead's team:

Talent, opponents to help fill arena

That athletic director Don Hulbert stopped short of making any attendance predictions for fear of starting "a feeding frenzy" was in itself a prediction of the fanaticism that awaits the Moorhead boys hockey team.

"I think we probably have one of the best attended JV games in the state," he said.

Because you may have to watch the under card to guarantee entry to the main event.

Tonight marks the start of a schedule that's as loaded as the No. 1-ranked Spuds, who are still in hot pursuit of their first state title.

Moorhead will host Bemidji at 7:30 p.m. at Moorhead Sports Center in the first of 13 home games.

Future occupants of the visitors locker room include No. 2 Bloomington Jefferson, third-ranked and defending Class 2A state champ Centennial, No. 5 White Bear Lake, No. 7 Duluth East and Warroad, rated No. 2 in Class 1A.

There are also road trips to No. 9 Hill-Murray and Fargo South, the top-ranked team in North Dakota, plus an entry into the Schwan's Cup, a holiday tournament at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul that boasts 8 of the top 10 teams in Class 2A.

"It's a pretty tough schedule, so we'll get tested," senior forward Matt Becker said.

Then, without being asked, he added, "It should be some great crowds."

"Maybe our record won't be as good as it's been the past few years," said Spuds coach Dave Morinville, whose team returns seven of its top nine scorers from last year's team that went 26-3 and finished state runner-up, "but that's how you become a better team."

Then again, those could be the words of a cautious coach trying to temper enormous expectations.

The four-time defending section champion Spuds haven't dropped a home game since Jan. 20, 2001. The team went 9-0 playing before an average of 1,600 fans at the 2,900-seat Moorhead Sports Center last season. But on more than one occasion, spectators were still waiting to purchase single-game tickets (hint: those with season passes don't have to wait in line) well into the first period.

"It depends on what else is going on, but we've been a pretty good draw," Morinville said. "Hopefully, people will want to come out and see us."

That's what will make or break the gate.

Because most of the Spuds heralded opponents hail from 200-plus miles away, Hulbert said the number of visiting fans could be down from previous seasons. However, there's no accounting for the NHL fan that might have previously been content to watch hockey from the dent in their sofa -- or the NHL employee, for that matter. Morinville said league scouts are scheduled to make regular appearances beginning tonight.

Just in case capacity does become an issue, Hulbert is tinkering with "seating efficiency" and the location of the student section.

It's a nice problem to have considering location -- and, to some degree, success -- has hindered the scheduling efforts of other Moorhead athletic programs. The football team, for example, had only six in-state games on its original schedule this fall after reaching the state semifinals in 2003.

"We've always tried to have the most competitive schedule for our student-athletes," Hulbert said. "It's fair and we're really trying to listen to the needs of each individual program. If a program fits well playing schools of a lower class we're going to play them."

Or, in this case, the Spuds are going to play the best.

Boy are there ever familiar names for Sioux fans in that box score.  Obviously Lee and Vandevelde, but also former Sioux names like Becker and Christian, and of course Loos.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I went to the game last night. Lee is easily the best player out there. He is very smooth. Never gets rattled. He looks very effortless where Ammerman looks rushed all the time. Ammerman is still a good player. I was immpressed with Drew Fisher. I think he is a transfer from International Falls. Vandvelde is very fast as is Loos and Becker. Becker is a little small though. Lee is the man though.

THe whole team seems to center around him. Also his wrist shot is unbeleivable. He finds the open slots very well. Moorhead overall was much bigger faster and stronger than Bemidji. Good game to watch. Jordy Christian scored as well. Anybody know if that is Dave Christian's son? Good player as well.
