What happens if a majority of the voters on the Standing Rock reservation vote "no" on measure 2?

In the eyes of the NCAA, absolutely nothing. UND remains on sanctions, schools continue to refuse to play us, and our conference affiliation with the Big Sky stays precarious at best. (I should clarify, that's what would happen should the no votes win the referendum). The short answer is the NCAA doesn't care about this election...statewide results or Sioux/Benson (Spirit Lake) County votes.

It will prove how right some of us were & how UND Failed to get approval - It should matter to the ncaa but their an evil empire that fools let walk all over them

You get what you give & we will get what we deserve

Care to give specifics on how "UND failed?"

The Tribal Council and Tribal Chairman are the official voices of the Standing Rock Tribe, just as the US Congress and President are the official voices of the United States. They make the official policy. The popularity of something doesn't matter if the official voice says the opposite. The Tribal Council does not want UND to use the nickname. They have had that policy for 20 years. UND couldn't even a conversation with them about the issue, so it was impossible to get them to change their mind. UND didn't have a chance to succeed with this issue.

On Measure 2?

Property taxes still exist.

Did you mean Measure 4? If so ...

Nothing. The NCAA wants to hear from Standing Rock Goverment, not Sioux County.

UND IS FAST BECOMING A BUNCH OF LOSERS - I SEE LESS COURAGE & PRIDE OR FIGHTING SPIRIT

The University seems to be fighting very hard to retire the nickname and remove the sanctions. They just aren't fighting for what you want.

The NCAA wanted to hear from the Standing Rock Government by November 30, 2010. They don't care if they ever hear from Standing Rock or Spirit Lake again at this point, the deadline is past.

We will know how standing rock feels about property taxes, I guess.

Sorry, I meant measure 4.

Say its a strong majority vote. Why wouldn't Archie Fools Bear be able to use that vote to preassure the tribal council?

roll over is all these guys want to do

It will be interesting how UND & people like 82 have alienated a couple generations of Fighting Sioux Fans & they will lose many of those Fans

If it means losing "fans" such as yourself I am fine with that. There will be many more generations coming up to take your place.

Why haven't they been able to do that already? There's been polling done and signatures for a petition have been collected to allow a vote, however the Tribal Council has refused to acknowledge either. Standing Rock voters had an opportunity to vote for new Tribal Council Members in their election, but failed to elect any "pro-name" candidates to a position. The Tribal Council has had ample time, 5+ years, to grant approval...but they haven't.

Standing Rock isn't voting, only Sioux County is. I doubt the couple hundred votes that may come out of Sioux County will be enough to apply serious pressure to the Tribal Council. Also, in terms of sanctions on UND, the NCAA's opinion is the only one with the potential to change them (and they're not budging).

The NCAA has repeatedly said that they plan to follow the settlement agreement with UND and the state of North Dakota. That agreement said that UND had until November 30, 2010 to get tribal approval from Spirit Lake and Standing Rock. Anything after that date would not be considered. We are 18 months past the deadline. So the NCAA will not consider a change in position at Standing Rock now because it is after the deadline. This vote does not matter to the NCAA in any way. If UND continues to use the nickname they will remain on sanctions. If UND retires the nickname they will be removed from the sanctions list.

I have wondered if that would be true. If by some reason (IMO Hell would freeze over first) their Tribal Council approved the Sioux name and logo..would the NCAA overlook the deadline? Or would they figure UND ignored the settlement, (NCAA) has been in court twice now, so from now on no matter what happens UND will either be on sanctions or will have to retire the name with NO exceptions.

There are more people being alienated by this issue being dragged on forever. And even more fans will be alienated if UND develops a losing tradition like the wonderful role model you seem to support at Alcorn State.

The NCAA told the delegation from North Dakota last August that they were going to follow the settlement and that they don't care if Standing Rock changes their position. Contracts and legal settlements have deadlines, and they are meaningless if the deadlines aren't followed. The NCAA wants to get rid of as many Native American nicknames as possible. Why would they let UND have one back if they don't have to? As far as the NCAA is concerned it is a done deal.

The "wanted" to hear from them in 2005, and did so, in the negative.

It amazes me that those who chirp about "hearing from Sioux County" so easily disregard the governmental structure on SR that has "officially" told UND "No" on at least one occasion. Minor detail, but these tribal governments are considered sovereign by the US government, even it that fact is painfully inconvenient for the anti-UND crowd.

Dave, Fetch....you paying attention to this? By the way, we are still witing for PROOF and FACTS that the NCAA will back down on their posotion and take us off sanctions if we keep the name. What indications do you have that they will do that? Still waiting......... :whistling:

Somewhat funny is all of you sat on the other side with DaveK, Fetch, and Chewey when we tried to tell you what would happen and you dismissed us. Now you are singing the same song we sang and pretend you wrote the lyrics.

Sioux County is run by the Sioux County Commission and is a part of the State of North Dakota.

Standing Rock Nation is a soverign nation (as Canada is a soverign nation) recognized by the US Government.

The NCAA wants to hear from Standing Rock, not Sioux County.

It's in writing in the settlement agreement.
