SiouxVolley
Don’t see USD and SDSU propping up a DI Augustana in Sioux Falls. The DI transition will take 5 years, so the Summit would not have a official new team for five years. With Sioux Falls having great hockey attendance for their USHL team (blows out USD and SDSU mbb attendance) Sanford should offer a hockey endowment for Augustana. The WCHA would take them, and the NCHC is possible after a few years. But mbb appears to be what Sanford wants. Probably would rename the Augie as Sanford - similar to Stanford and Samford but actually unique.
SIOUXFAN97
at what point do either mankato or duluth do the "omaha" and drop football and go d1 across the board and join the summit.

Three years ago if it was to happen. A Minnie school now has the same problem as Augie: don’t see any of the Dakota wanting a “home” team taking Minnesota recruits. A move up now does nothing for the Summit for five years. If St Thomas was interested, that would have been different, but they aren’t and would take 8 years even to be able as their DIII right now. SiouxVolley
So Gonzaga made it official, as they are staying in the WCC for next year. http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2018/apr/02/gonzaga-athletic-director-mike-roth-says-zags-stay/#/0 That $7 million that the Zags earned from their Final Four run seems to be a big driver for them to stay. It runs out in four more years, so they need another run near the end of that.

Yep...a potentially basketball focused school with a healthy budget in a good sports town within easy traveling distance sounds absolutely terrible. I'm sure the UNI's of the world said the same thing back in the early 2000s when NDSU and SDSU moved into the Gateway/MVFC for football... I get that adding Augie to the Summit does nothing the automatic bid status of the conference in the "NOW" context...but it's within the conference footprint in a growing city with a potential healthy endowment. If they do things right, they could offer great diversity to the Dakota 4 (being basketball/Olympic-centric)...and could easily become a power in the league.

UNDBIZ
Augie is a small, mediocre school with a tiny endowment. I was under the impression they're the type of school UND and the other Dakotas moved to D1 to get away from. You are who you associate with.

SiouxVolley
Any new Summit school can not be a DII move up as that would be an enormous risk, as they take at least five years. Have to an existing DI school(s): UMKC, UNC, Chicago St, E Illinois, Drake, UNI, Loyola-Chicago, UWGB, NMSU, UVU etc. And most of those have zero chance of moving down or up. Unless the Summit goes west: Montana, Mt St, Weber St, Idaho and makes fb a sport. And Mbb scheduling is going to be even worse, as most conferences will require 20 conference games. The WCC is one of the few that will go to 16 because of Gonzaga’s demands. Maybe a interlocking schedule with the dregs of the WCC?

SiouxVolley
21 minutes ago, SIOUXFAN97 said: is Seattle "happy" with where they are? No. They have stated a desire to get in the WCC ever since they moved back up. Pacific and BYU go in over them. And they have a play at their tiny campus gym until Key Arena is made over so getting out is unlikely for several year. The Summit is considered a black hole to most schools because it doesn’t have potential students, athletes, or current alumna. It defeats the purpose of being DI and a big reason UMKC and Oakland and IUPUI left. No self respecting school would want to be part of it unless that is also true of it (the Montana’s, N Idaho, Wyoming if it had another school further north). No self respecting school would want to be part of it unless that is also true of it (the Montana’s, N Idaho, Wyoming if it had another school further north). UMKC left ( and it is mentioned in the below article) because they felt getting to the NCAA tournament would be easier in a new WAC. Oakland wanted into the Horizon from the day they announced the move to D1. Detroit is their natural rival. They made no bones about their intention from the date they joined the Mid-Con. IUPUI wanted into the Horizon based on geography. It is the same reason IPFW want it. Entry into the Horizon places them into a bus league saving a lot of money and creating geographic rivals. By Andrew Vaupel – Associate Editor, Online, Kansas City Business Journal Mar 6, 2018, 8:15am CST Updated Mar 6, 2018, 7:44am The University of Missouri-Kansas City's affiliation with the Western Athletic Conference is beginning to take its toll. According to KCUR, the university joined the WAC in 2013 primarily to give its men's basketball team a better shot at landing an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. However, the team has managed only one winning season since joining the conference.
SWSiouxMN
So two questions 1) How likely is the Summit to get to 10 teams before the 18-19 season? 2) If no for number 1, how will the travel partners work? SiouxVolley
Doug Burgum’s example of Arizona State’s massive enrollment via online is noticeable. ASU has decreased its % of revenue from the state down to 9%, which Burgum seems to want ND U’s to do too. UND is much more able to add more online students than say NDSU as those online courses already exist at UND. http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/4428436-doug-burgum-touts-outside-funding-model-north-dakota-universities Well one of the cheapest ways to advertise is by going FBS. Just saying.
