  1. Sad to report that 1989 UND Hall of Fame inductee and basketball star Don Gunhus passed away on Christmas Day. He was a native of Park River and was a day shy of 69. He played for UND from 1971-75.
  2. I'm surprised there is very little acknowledgment of the death of one of UND's great basketball coaches. Bill Fitch could coach, unlike the last few. His first year he inherited a team that was not his. He had to endure losing players and ineligibility, but he still won 15 games his first season. He had to go to the YMCA league to recruit players for the 2nd semester and still beat the Bison 3 out of 4 games. His freshman team (not eligible then) beat the varsity in the first exhibition. The Fieldhouse filled up by 6 PM for the freshman game. Six thousand crowds were common back then.
  3. Around 1960, the NCC consisted of 7 teams. Morningside and USD were travel partners, along with SDSU/Augustana and UND/NDSU. Iowa State Teachers (later State College of Iowa and UNI) was the outlier.
  4. Sorry if this is multiple posts, but Directv shows tonight's game on channel 683 at 8PM
  5. Just looked at the DirecTV schedule and it shows Valpo and North Dakota on 623 Fox College Sports at 7 PM.
  6. The year was 1931. My Dad always swore that the '31 team was the best ever. Oregon was travelling by train to New York for a game with NYU and stopped off in Grand Forks for a "warm-up". The game ended in a 0-0 tie. Oregon was listed as #6 in the nation that year in the old Massey ratings. UND that year was 8-1-2. They beat DePaul and all the regional competition. The ties were with Oregon and George Washington, and the loss was to Duquesne.
  7. I just saw on Rivals that Oregon has scheduled South Dakota for 8/30/14. Oregon has also scheduled Nichols State in 2013, Eastern Washington in 2015, UC Davis in 2016, and Southern Utah in 2017. It looks like the Pac 12 is the place to pick up the money games.
  8. Anyone know where the pregame get-together will be in San Diego on Saturday?
  9. Getting way off topic, but here's more on the derivation of "teh". Not just a Bisonville thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teh
  10. According to the HBU website, Houston Baptist has been accepted into the Southland Conference in 2013-14. Football will start for HBU in 2014.
  11. Try http://collegesportsinfo.com/ There are forums on each conference and lots of speculative blogs referenced.
  12. Has there ever been any thought to playing softball in the Alerus Center? It could probably shoe horn in with a shorter right field fence and a taller wall. I think UNI plays some in the Unidome.
  13. I believe Marquette dropped the Warrior moniker some years ago because it was hostile and abusive. They were among the first to change.
  14. For comparison, NDSU/UND Transition Years - Lower Div. Opponents Year One '04 NDSU Montana Tech, Carson Newman '08 UND TAM Kingsville, St. Cloud St., Wis. LaCrosse Year Two '05 NDSU Arkansas Monticello '09 UND Sioux Falls, So. Oregon Year Three '06 NDSU Concordia St.P. '10 UND NE State-OK Year Four '07 NDSU All D-1 '11 UND Sioux Falls, BH State, Montana Western Year Five, Six, Seven '08,09,10 NDSU All D-1
  15. Very, very disappointing. If we are going to play NAIA or just out of NAIA, why don't we just go back to playing Crookston or Mary? Then, again I'm not sure we can win all three against Sioux Falls, Black Hills and Montana Western.
  16. You have missed my point. My comment was on the coaches' post-game quotes, particularly Jones and Mussman, and their satisfaction in playing hard. "Everything" is a figure of speech and a quote from Vince Lombardi. Contentment with a good effort is not enough.
  17. I'm watching on Directv 617 here in Oklahoma. Looks like a good crowd.
  18. It's a nice fantasy to think that this is an opportunity for both UND and NDSU can join back up in an FBS conference. I don't think there is enough fanbase or financial base for both to go up after so recently jumping from D2. Wyoming struggles with FBS with only one 4 yr. university in the state, so I think supporting 2 in ND would not be well received. The bigger issue is future schedules. Fresno St. in 2011 is certainly in jeopardy if they have to revamp, and Montana in 2013 is probably out of the question for a home game if the go WAC. That being said, the chaos this creates will probably be advantageous to UND because of the openings that will be created or the refortification of conferences.
  19. America's Best Value was clean, but very, very spartan. If you are only spending one or two nights, the CanadInn is adjacent to the Al and Hilton Garden Inn is on campus and midway between the Ralph and Al.
  20. Speaking of the 50's, the first game I ever saw in The Barn was a preseason game between the Detroit Redwings and a Winnipeg team--I think the Winnipeg Monarchs. I remember it because of seeing Gordy Howe and Terry Sawchuck, of the names I can remember. I think it was "56-"57 or so. Are there any records of anything like that?
  21. You are right, GeauxSioux. The Barn was east of the steam plant, just under the water tower. It was as cold a place to watch hockey as you could ever imagine. Chicken wire instead of glass, Purpur's Rube Goldberg resurfacing contraption, super smoky warming house--but we won NC's.
  22. Hey Geaux Sioux, wish you could be there. I'm making your cousins go to the Sioux pep rally and sit on the Sioux side. They can wear their Texas Tech hats, but they'll all definitely have some Sioux green on. Lubbock is a great town-a lot like Fargo and Grand Forks, but quite a bit bigger. My first reaction when we took our first cousin there over twenty years ago was that it was like the Red River Valley--flat as the eye can see.
  23. GeauxSioux has been off line for the last few days. He went up to Grand Forks last weekend for a Football/Hockey weekend, and much more faced him. His dad, Bing Larson, became very ill and passed away on Sunday morning. He was GeauxSioux's dad and my brother. Bing was named to the Top 100 Basketball Players for UND and represented the 1950's. He was all-state at Park River and captained the Sioux in 1957-58 as a junior. He remained in ND and was a community leader. He worked for 1st National Bank/Alerus for many years. He loved UND sports and was at most of the games over the past 40 years. His family has set up an endowment with the UND Foundation-Mens's Basketball to help the program. If you can contribute in his memory, please do so. Please remember Bing and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
  24. There is a better aerial view of Memorial Stadium at: http://siouxsports.com/football/history/memorialstadium.htm The bleachers on the east side away from the main stadium were added in the early seventies from a defunct race track in Brainerd, MN. Additional portable bleachers were added in each end zone. I recall attendances in the 15,000 range after the new bleachers were added--of course only with NDSU. Someone asked earlier about night games. The lights were removed from the stadium in the mid-sixties because college football was considered a Saturday afternoon affair. The few night games prior to that were no better attended than the afternoon games and certainly took away from the college football atmosphere.
