Mankato and Green Bay.  Don't need two DII move ups.

Mankato should look at DI, mid major hoops could be their niche. But they would need to pull an Omaha to make it work and that isn't an easy undertaking.

WIU will never be in the Horizon, that league covets big markets and Macomb makes Brookings look like Chicago. The OVC is really the only place I could see them going to and I am not sure either party has a lot of interest in that move.

Here a basketball bio of Murray St:

29 straight winning years

15 dance appearances

2 dance wins in past 10 years, Colo St and Vandy

Recent coaches that used Murray St as a stepping stone:

Mark Gottfried - went on to coach Alabama and NC State

Mick Cronin - now at Cincy

Billy Kennedy - now at Texas A&M

Steve Prohm- now at Iowa St

Murray St has had brilliant coaching hires over the past 20 years.   Murray St has a small endowment compared to us and has a smaller enrollment.   Why can't we be a program that can attract stellar young coaches and athletes?

Would they get rid of football to move up?

There is no way St. Cloud moves up - no money, no support, no motivation. They are cutting their budget like crazy, eliminating departments and laying off professors right and left. Their admissions have dropped double digits for several years.

There's a Slummit story that should be followed that can effect the OVC and MVC too.  The bond status of the directional U's in Illinois have just been cut to junk status.  That means E Ill, W Il, S Ill, N Ill, Governors St, and NE Ill are officially in a crisis mode.  Illinois is in such debt that may have no choice but to close schools.  Guess raising taxes to the highest Midwest levels drove so much business out that they are collecting even less.  Illinois, Ill-Chi, and Illinois St are in much better shape because of endowments and research.

There is even rumors circulating that some of the directionals will be closed after May 31st to save the others.  W Ill and E Ill may be very vulnerable, as they have the lowest ratings other than Chicago St.

They have been talking about that for a couple years now in Illinois, as I posted about back in this thread in December of 2015.

I thought it would have happened by now actually.  Just waiting for the shoe to officially drop.

you do wonder when the shoe will drop...but its always easier to borrow money against...(not sure what they have left to borrow against tho) and leave it up to the next mayor, gov, or whatnot...but yes something has to change in that crooked state...and soon.

The Republican governor and the Democrat House are at loggerheads over the deep debt.  Both side have been so corrupt in the past, as both had governors that are now in prison.  Meanwhile, the directionals are cutting programs and losing students because new ones won't enroll, making the crisis worse.  Illinois's directional schools may not be able to afford DI going forward.  Illinois kids enrolling out of state are at record levels and climbing when Illinois does not produce so many HS grads as before.

Years of corruption and lack of honest government are taking a massive toll with no end in sight.

Southern Indiana just announced about a $50 mill improvement to its on-campus arena to be done in phases.  They deny DI is in the plans, but the OVC could be threatening the MVC:  losing Murray St will cause you us to add DI competition in your back yard.

USI has many more grads than Evansville, but started later so it is newer.

UND played USI for a DII women's bball championship.

That was the 1997 game at the Hyslop, I was at that game. I have never heard that place more loud.

The MVC officials will visit Valpo and Murray St this week.  No word on a possible 12th school.  Eleven schools would make 20 conference games, which is what they might want.

Visit two; get one; ten teams.

The MVC probably only goes to 10 next year, and then 11 the following.  The 12th could be bid out in subsequent years as to who is doing the best and has money.

The 1999 North Central Region Final vs NDSU (a colossal beat down of the Bison) was also pretty loud.

How many has the MVC lost the last couple years?

If Murray State is invited, will it include football to the MVFC?

Valpo likely to stay non-scholarship in Patriot Pioneer with Drake?

Only Creighton and Wichita St this decade.  Loyola is the only "new" team.

UNI, Mo St, WIU, EIU, Green Bay, Valpo, Cleveland St, and Ill-Chicago started the Midcontinent Conference nearly 40 years ago, and most of those schools have long joined the MVC or Horizon. The ND schools wanted to join up with UNI, but were rebuffed by the others.

Can't imagine the OVC will let them stay for fb.  The MVFC probably goes with divisions for scheduling purposes.

At some pt what is the pt of the Slummit having fb in the MVFC?  Invite the Montanas, Idaho and EWU and have our own all sports league, getting rid of WIU and the IP-soups.
