We need guys committed to the program that allow a little flexibility in recruiting, especially with CHL players in the mix now who may not commit to college hockey until after they are drafted. Grubb should be in Brandon after this year. He’ll have a big year at SSM this year and if he has a nice year at Brandon the year following, he could be a first rounder. 1 2 Quote

I read the article on the Herald and thought he was a FANTASTIC get. 1 Quote

Lets see how many points he puts up on the prep team as a 16 year old, and then beyond. I think he's a kid that you could see in Dubuque next year as well if he keeps growing and adding mass, but the Wheat Kings are likely. 2 Quote

brianvf Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Schloss already dropped the article: https://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/fargo-defenseman-zaide-penner-commits-to-und Quote Zaide Penner grew up in north Fargo, sometimes joking about his dream hockey career path. "We've always talked about that," he said, "playing for the Fargo Force and then going up to UND and staying close to home." Quote Penner is known as a two-way defenseman. "He's a nice blend," Skinner said. "He plays hard. Everyone at the Hlinka camp talked about how quickly he closes. He's not a huge defenseman, but he defends smart and he defends hard. The things that stand out are how hard he plays and how quickly he closes." Penner received interest from other NCAA programs, but didn't extensively explore them. "UND was my No. 1 choice," he said. "If that didn't work out, I wasn't too picky." 2 Quote
The Sicatoka Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Any relation to former NHLer and Maine Black Bear Dustin Penner (from Winkler, MB)? Quote

siouxweet Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Can't get too excited about all these 16 year old verbal commitments until a LOI is signed and they step foot on campus. Cole Spicer or Jaksen Panzer ring any bells. Quote

A commitment does not mean much for the player or school until the player steps foot on campus. A few guys on our committed list will not play for UND, whether that is their choice or not. Dane’s message at his opening press conference was clear; get guys that bleed green and white. A guy like Penner may not be flashy, but he has four years to develop into a UND hockey player. If he doesn’t, at least they are making an effort to keep recruiting somewhat local. 1 1 Quote

As we've mentioned since the coaching change and addition of a GM, programs need 3-4 year guys who will go to war to help the team win, invested in the year to year results. With how Penner has progressed over the past calendar year, I am confident that he can be a solid middle/bottom pairing defenseman for North Dakota in a few years. 2 Quote
gfhockey Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago I trust the staff, but do you remember when the previous person local kits and how that work out. I’m all for local kids, but Quote
