The Sicatoka Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Well, I'm looking into my crystal ball and seeing a "diverse" committee of "stakeholders" coming out with <number> final round recommendations for a new moniker for UND in mid-2011. Thus, I'll put mine out. Feel free to join in. Please include the moniker/genre and the why/why not it'll succeed. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 I'll guess six finalists: Rough Riders - state nickname, see: Kansas, Michigan, Tennessee, Wyoming, et al (ND/UND trumps GFRR) Nokotas - it's the only animal indignious and unique to North Dakota (and grows hair on its, ahem, scrotum ) Reapers - good concept (farmers of the past, UAVs of today and tomorrow) but too edgy for some of the "sensitive enlightened" Flickertails - it'll fail because it's unmarketable next to the urine-colored M-rodent to the east (don't forget "the Benjamins") <weather/celestial phenomena> - nice idea but people are sick of generic 'storms' and such <something cutesy integrating "UND"> - sUNDogs = fail Missing the final six cut: <some sky raptor> - eagles at UMC and hawks in Fargo, and the owl being seen as evil in some cultures, ends this theme Mafia - MafiaMan would love it, but can you imagine Tony Soprano sending "protesters" ... <anthing Dirty supports> - just on principle Winner? Well, one name was used by a tribal chair and a prominent former UND hoopster. That tells me the fix is in for that one. Quote
mikejm Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Winner? Well, one name was used by a tribal chair and a prominent former UND hoopster. That tells me the fix is in for that one. EagleStaffs? Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 22, 2009 Author Posted September 22, 2009 EagleStaffs? Cute. Bob would've appreciated that. But one name/moniker in my final six list was used by a tribal chair and prominent former UND hoopster recently. Quote
ScottM Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Okay ... Jets ... too obvious with CAS ... Storm ... more marketing, focus-group-based crap ... Force ... (see Storm) Express ... (see Storm) Less obvious, but still possible dark horses ... Sugar Beet Stench ... Green Tide ... Mosquitos ... Pigeons ... Coots ... Loons ... Quote
ihatethegophers Posted September 22, 2009 Posted September 22, 2009 Reapers - good concept (farmers of the past, UAVs of today and tomorrow) but too edgy for some of the "sensitive enlightened" I like this one. Quote
Goon Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 something cutesy integrating "UND"> - sUNDogs = fail When I see that my head just want to explode. Quote
Goon Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Reapers - good concept (farmers of the past, UAVs of today and tomorrow) but too edgy for some of the "sensitive enlightened" I was at the open house for the UAV's and those things are an impressive site. Global Hawk or Predator "B". Quote
GeauxSioux Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Cute. Bob would've appreciated that. But one name/moniker in my final six list was used by a tribal chair and prominent former UND hoopster recently. Not a big fan of Rough Riders. I've already been through the litany of reasons why. Quote
sioux7>5 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Not a big fan of Rough Riders. I've already been through the litany of reasons why. I kinda like RoughRiders but I like Cavalry a lot. I still think it would be a great nickname and a way to honor the military! Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 I was at the open house for the UAV's and those things are an impressive site. USAF flies them. So does NASA. So do these guys. All have ties to Grand Forks, ND, and UND. Quote
Goon Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 USAF flies them. So does NASA. So do these guys. All have ties to Grand Forks, ND, and UND. I dunno, Predators would be a sweet nick name. There are already a ton of sports teams with the name "Hawks" The picture is the one like the UAS at the GFAB that are run by CBP. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 Predators would be a sweet nick name. Too "Nashville." Be unique. Reapers can look both back (state's ag history) and forward (GFAFB and UND UAV/UAS missions). Quote
dmksioux Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I dunno, Predators would be a sweet nick name. There are already a ton of sports teams with the name "Hawks" The picture is the one like the UAS at the GFAB that are run by CBP. Not a bad name...but what would we use as a logo or a mascot? I don't know that I would get excited about a UAV as a logo If we have to change the name...my vote would be for Fighting/Mighty Norse, Rough Riders, or Nokota's/Nokes. I know it's a pick six, but hopefully these three would be included...right now there is no other suggested nicknames that I have grown a liking to. Quote
sprig Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I'd like a jersey with a duck on it, not a caricature, but a real duck, maybe the mallard, canvasback, or pintail (the ND Sprigs would be just right) Why it wouldn't work; the nonres sotas and badgers might actually start shooting any of the three to stick in their freezers to throw on the ice, rather than the hodgepodge of brown ducks they now bellycrawl up on to ground sluice (gadwalls, wigeons, shovelers, and coots). Quote
Oxbow6 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 To me it's a no-brainer if we have to switch...Rough Riders! Has historical value/meaning to the state, can come up with a cool logo and mascot and most importantly it goes totally opposite of what we have now...meaning the NAs and their "heritage" in this state will become more irrelevant and obscure than they currently are, and UND and this state can move forward with a postive nickname and logo that is true to the roots of this state. Just my opinion...fire away! Quote
Oxbow6 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Not a big fan of Rough Riders. I've already been through the litany of reasons why. I respect your opinion but disagree, if I may, with your reasoning. Quote
UND92,96 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Too "Nashville." Be unique. Reapers can look both back (state's ag history) and forward (GFAFB and UND UAV/UAS missions). Why do the words "more cowbell" keep popping into my head? I do kind of like the name, though. Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 Not a bad name...but what would we use as a logo or a mascot? I have a Reaper logo ... Quote
The Sicatoka Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 Why do the words "more cowbell" keep popping into my head? I do kind of like the name, though. Don't be afraid. Quote
Shawn-O Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Reapers sounds like something out of Marvel Comics, no thanks. Quote
UND92,96 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I have a Reaper logo ... It would be more intimidating if it was being brandished by somebody out of the classically bad movie "Children of the Corn." Quote
Shawn-O Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 It would be more intimidating if it was being brandished by somebody out of the classically bad movie "Children of the Corn." Have Malachi brandishing it....I think Carrot Top played him. Quote
UND92,96 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Have Malachi brandishing it....I think Carrot Top played him. Not too many people will probably get the joke, but that's funny! Here's our logo: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5...eCornPoster.jpg Quote
gjw007 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 I find it interesting that people think that you have to have a nickname to brand the university. University of North Dakota is a brand the same as GM or Apple. The University of North Dakota Football team is a product under this brand (the same as iPod is a product under the Apple brand) the same as the University of North Dakota men's hockey team, etc. The University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux or any other nickname is redundant. As such, the nickname can be marketed separately but doesn't necessarily add value whereas there is always value in the brand name (University of North Dakota). I would simply go with the University of North Dakota without a nickname. It is marketable with it unique logo. It is not as hard as people are making it out to market the name. In the end, the most important factor will be the alumni who support the school, not a name, and winning teams. Everybody wants to be with a winner so a winning team, or at least competitive, is important. Quote
