Is this really how they do it? If someone truly believed they were capable of playing D1 in ___ sport, I doubt they'd be paying to go to ndsu and play intramurals. If no varsity women's sports were offered at ndsu, I'm guessing the surveys would then show litte/no interest in varsity softball/basketball/etc. because those interested are going to school and playing elsewhere.

At the time, loyalties were to the state first. There was a difference in belief regarding the extent of centralized power, and the south strongly believed the states should have more power to govern themselves (the 10th amendment wouldn't disagree with them). It could be viewed somewhat similarly to a block European countries leaving the EU today (though the EU hasn't amassed the central power of the US gov't at that time, yet). That said, it makes litte sense for Nevada to celebrate the southern rebellion, other than the west being settled by people seeking a new life far away from that centralized power.

Unfortunately, I get the impression there will be a petition drive to go back to no nickname if anything other than North Dakota is chosen. Whether it's successful or not is another thing, but it'll certainly drag out the whole process. And if sundogs is chosen, I'll be tempted to sign the petition. It'll take one h*ll of a logo.
