I don't know; based on what I have seen around the country, all that seems to matter is winning. Future generations will likely read these comments and laugh at how upset everyone is about this.

If student-athletes were employees, the NCAA would become no different than the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, etc. If that happened, they probably could kiss their anti-trust exemption goodbye, along with their tax-exempt status. And you would have "free agent" bidding wars between colleges, which would be more bad PR for them. There are numerous reasons (both legal and financial) why it would be bad for the NCAA.
-
Just remember, once you open up that Pandora's Box, there ain't no closing it. Student-athletes as employees would change a lot of things and not for the better. Why else do you think the NCAA fights this idea like a cat in a sack?

Really? You are saying that not liking our new logo is the equivalent to using vulgar language or posting sexually explicit material online? Because those are the things I see student-athletes get in trouble for. I have never seen a student-athlete get in trouble for not liking a sports team's logo. If coaches cracked down on every little thing, they wouldn't have enough players to fill a roster. And I think Bubba leads by example and his players follow him because they love him and would run through a brick wall for him. And these athletes didn't have to choose UND, they could have gone someplace else. So we should appreciate them for what they do on the field/court/ice. They don't owe us anything; at least that is what we are told when one of our hockey players leaves school early.
-
And don't kid yourself; Bubba may be a class act, but if he doesn't win here he'll be gone just like Mussman was and like Lennon was at SIU.
-
Well, then I guess Brad Berry is not "the man" because his captain posted some pretty strong stuff on Twitter about this. And I honestly don't have a problem with it. I don't hate the logo as much as some people on here do, but nobody has to like it.

An opinion on a nickname is not equivalent to questioning a play call during a game. Please come up with a better response than that.
-
Well, he was talking like student-athletes owe us whatever we demand of them or else, so I think he needs to heal thyself.
-
Yeah, a coach is going to sit an athlete for saying something the coaching staff didn't like; I don't think so. Part of college athletics is the need to win games and championships and you don't do that by sitting an athlete for having an unpopular opinion.

And as for a college being a business, that is true.....if you are talking about the University of Phoenix or Southern New Hampshire University or any one of the private, for-profit colleges you see commercials for all the time. UND gets significant state and federal dollars, not just tuition and fees. Last time I checked, a true business exists to make a profit. I don't think UND exists to make a profit; they are just trying to balance the budget every year.

Whoa, hold on there: Shut up and play? There is a group of people from a certain political persuasion that I do not share who likes to b!tch and moan about how "liberal campus speech codes" are taking away our freedoms and liberties. Now, all of a sudden, student-athletes are supposed to "shut up and play"? It can't be both; either college campuses are free speech zones or they aren't. Or does it depend on what speech and who is speaking it? We don't "own" these young men and women. Most of them could have gone any number of other places. And if they were not here, we wouldn't have teams, players and championships to talk about. We should appreciate them for what they do and not tell them to "shut up" about anything.
-
Really? So our student-athletes are employees? Are you sure you want to go there? That is a can of worms I am not going to touch. If a court were to rule in that manner, it would have far-reaching implications and not all of them would be positive.
-
We could have a variation that has the hawk without the "ND" behind it. That would look good on a hockey jersey.
-
I don't like the idea of gag orders on anyone. Either you believe in the 1st Amendment or you don't. And regarding the comment about how much student-athletes receive in scholarships and FCOA stipends; are you saying they are employees? That is a can of worms I would not touch with a 10 foot pole. And would any coach even consider cutting an athlete because they spoke out against something they didn't agree with? Let people vent and express how they feel about this.

Bubba always gives the most heartfelt, honest, straightforward speeches. We are so fortunate to have him. And he says he is embracing the new logo. Someone on here want to tell him he is wrong?
-
If it's going to be put on our hockey jerseys, I think we should just have the logo and not "North Dakota" above it. The logo needs to stand alone so it will stand out to people.
-
Let's face it, some people on here were going to hate it no matter what it was. I am willing to give it a chance.

This does get rid of the Notre Dame-style interlocking "ND" that some people didn't like.

You and your tag team partner 82SiouxGuy insisted that this either a) wouldn't happen and/or b) shouldn't happen. I just wanted to remind you and your tag partner that you don't know everything and the "Father Knows Best" routine you use on here gets old and occasionally gets you burned. And you obviously missed the and at the end of my message; I was being snarky. But I suppose you'll contest that too?- 116 replies
