  1. So looking at the screening filters on this score sheet, here are the ones that stand out to me: - Be unique, recognizable, inspiring, and distinctly UND - Promote a sense of pride, strength, fiercness, and passion - Be representative of the state and region in a way that honors the traditions & heritage of the past but also looks to the future. Can anyone one on the committee, or anyone else for that matter, honestly tell me how Fighting Hawks, Green Hawks, Nodaks, North Stars, Sundogs, and even North Dakota meet the criteria listed above?
  2. Hey, if a Central alum can get behind the name Roughriders, than anyone can!!!
  3. People loved the Fighting Sioux name, but people wnet gaga over the new Brien designed logo when it came out in 2001. There are people that are still pissed the only nickname and logo are never going to used again. OK, how bout you get Brien to design a "Roughrider " logo that looks similar to the Sioux logo, but still different enough so it is unique on its own. This will maybe help the die hard "Sioux forever" crowd to adjust to a logo that is similar to the old one while embracing the new name. Just my thought!!
  4. The committee developed criteria that they developed that they wanted the new nickname to have: Be unique, recognizable, inspiring, and distinctly UND’s; Promote a sense of pride, strength, fierceness, and passion; Be representative of the state and region in a way that honors the traditions and heritage of the past but also looks to the future; and Be a unifying and rallying symbol. If you look at the committees own criteria, there is really only one name that fits all of them...ROUGHRIDERS.
  5. I think the point that is being made is sales of "UND Roughrider" (for example) merchandise will be greater than the current "North Dakota, with interlocking ND" merchandise. Not the only reason to select a new nickname over having nothing, but must be taken into consideration.
  6. The potential for the NCAA to get rid of ALL native american nicknames regardless of tribal approval may still happen down the road. UND does not want to go thru all of this again if that eventually happens. Plus it is already to late to gain approval as the deadline on the settlement has already passed. Of course, there are people that believe that what is written on a settlement doesn't really matter, so... But to answer your question, the chances of that happening are about as good as one of gfhockey's GOBC statements about UND sports insider information actually being correct!!!
  7. The reason that there are many of us that don't want UND to go with no nickname is because it doen't solve anything. I basically just kicks the can down the road and opens the door for this issue to pop up in the future. Is UND in breach of conract with the settlement agreement if they choose not to have a nickname and just be "North Dakota"? That issue can and has been debated ad nauseum on this board and other places. Points can be made for bothesides. But by not having a nickname, it leaves the door open for the NCAA to take action against UND at any time down the road. Sure there is no policy that says schools must have nicknames in their bylaws right now. But that can change in a second. My questiong is would you as a fan and does UND as an institution want to really walk on egg shells hoping that the no nickname desision is going to be ok with the NCAA for many years to come? Sure Emmert may not have an issue with UND not having a new nickname. But what about the next NCAA President after him? They could review the settlement and decide that not having a new nickname doens't really retire the old nickname that UND agreed to retire. Why take the risk? We could be right back here in 5-10 years trying to come up with a new nickname. Choosing a nickname now will gaurantee that this will not be an issue dwon the road. Not selecting one leaves the door open for future problems with the NCAA.
  8. I wonder if anywone on the commitee goes on to siouxsports.com and checks out what people are saying!!
  9. Everyone has their right to their opinion. Doesn't mean that every opinion is equally valid. Concerns that have been brought up about having no nickname are more than just opinions. They are real issues that need to be brought up. Concerns with having no nickname are nothing to be ignored. They aren't scare tactics. Just becuase the majority of people want no nickname, doesn't mean that it is the right thing for UND to choose to do. Names have been dropped from consideration for WAY less than this.
  10. So how come people were annoyed by "North Dakota Nokota" but "North Dakota North Stars" doesn't seem to bother anyone?!!
  11. This whole no nickname fiasco is just getting rediculous. Watever reason you have for no nickname, that's fine. UND needs a new nickname. Adopting nothing and continueing like we are now is just a stupid option and should not even be considered. If you hava problem with that, take your nookie and blankie and go cry home to your mommy. Wa Wa Wa, we don't like any othe names, Fighting Sioux forever, North Dakota good enough for me, wa wa wa. Seriously. Time for everyone to realize that no nickname is the WRONG option moving forward with real consequences down the road.
  12. If "North Dakota" is going to be on the final list to be voted on, I don't think that it is too much for anyone to ask UND to provide a statement from the NCAA stating that having no nickname and just being North Dakota is a viable option moving forward. Goehring, Kelley, the committee, etc seem so confident that it is still an option that it should be pretty easy for them to provide that information. It's kind of the big elephant in the room. One statement from the NCAA that supports their claim would clear everything up. Why haven't we seen this?
  13. There were really good names that were thrown out for WAY less then the name "North Dakota". Of all the names suggested, "North Dakota" has to be the most controversial. Yet it still remains.
  14. I just wish that someone "in the process" would come out and say that the NCAA has approved all the names left on the list including remaining just North Dakota. Maybe they will in the near future. Until then, I am going to remaing skeptical that the NCAA is going to allow it.
  15. So all the people that voted for "North Dakota", what are your reasons? - The other 14 names aren't good enough? - No name can ever replace Fighting Sioux? - It is unique to be the only school to be without a nickname? - Want to stick it to the NCAA for dropping our old name by not selecting a new one? - By not selecting a new name and being "North Dakota" UND can still unofficially be known as the Fighting Sioux? Or are there other reasons out there.
  16. The final 15 can be put into 4 categories: Good Roughriders Cavalry OK, but could live with Explorers Nodaks Too generic Fighting Hawks Green Hawks Thunderhawks Northstars North Dakota Just plain awful Blaze Fighting Green Force Pride Spirit Sundogs
  17. DING DING DING!!! We have a winner!!! This is EXACTLY why UND must adopt a new nickname. and is EXACTLY why it was laid out in the settlement agreement. It wasn't there by accident.
  18. Don't need to be a lawyer to understand what a settlement says. Please point out anything in my post that is not a fact?
  19. Many have said that it is an option. But has anyone asked the NCAA if having no nickname is an option? Or does it violate the settlement agreement? If it doesn't, then let "North Dakota" move forward in the nomination process. But I just want Goehring, Kelley, Faison, whoever to say that they have asked the NCAA if being ""North Dakota" is a vialble nickname for UND, and they have said that it is. So far I have not heard that from anyone. My thought on this is not baseless. I am reading the settlement afreement. Which is a legal document. Until I see evidence that says otherwise that North Dakota does not have to adopt a new nickname, then I will stick with that. YOu are right. There is no bylaw saying that any University needs a nickname. But UND signed a legal document saying they will adopt a new one. This isn't a baseless argument.
  20. And the Herald will just keep referring to UND as the "Green and White". Is this what you "Just stay North Dakota" people want? Because that is exactly what is going to happen.
  21. There are several reasons that we shouldn't be just "North Dakota. Notheing new. Settlement, without a nickname people can still refer to UND as the Fighting Sioux, no name on the list is better, etc, etc, etc. But when you think about it, having no nickname is just one of the stupidest ideas ever. People say "Hey, it's unique, we would be the only school without one!!" Well that's a pretty stupid reason. there is a reason that every other school out there has a mascot. It's because it gives an identity to the athletic teams and the school in general. Going without a nickname is just a dumb idea. Plain and simple.
  22. Tim Miller tweeted the other day that no one yet has asked if just "North Dakota" is an option. Seriously?? You are a sports reporter for the Herald?!! YOU ask the question. To Kelley, Goehring, Faison, whoever!! The question needs to be asked if UND officials and the committee have asked the NCAA if being just "North Dakota" with no nickname is allowed. IMO it directly violates the settlement agreement. I have yet to year Goehring or anyone in the nickname committee say "We checked with the NCAA and they said being just North Dakota is fine." YOu would think that at some point before a vote, UND submits all the names left and asks the NCAA if the names are permissable. Am I being to logical here?!!
  23. Continuing to play simply as “North Dakota” is still an option. Goehring said in his experience with the last task force, many alumni were in favor of it. “They saw it as a way to stay unique, to stay themselves,” he said. “People felt forced by the NCAA, and they feel it’s a way to make a statement that that's who they are as alumni.” Is it still an option?? What do the boys in Indianapolis think? Has anyone on the committe (especially the chair) looked into this yet? Sure its the overwhelming favorite, but that may not matter!!
