http://www.grandforksherald.com/opinion/our-opinion/3800581-our-opinion-roosevelts-flaws-dont-disqualify-roughriders-und-nickname "Teddy Roosevelt was steeped in the biases of his age, and he failed to transcend some of those beliefs. But he did transcend a great many other deep-rooted prejudices — and helped America do so as well, as his presidency led to profound changes in our approach to poverty, public health, industrial cartels and especially the natural world. That’s not perfection. But it’s a whole lot more than the rest of us mortals can hope to achieve. That’s about as close to greatness as human beings can get. And where figures from American history are concerned, it’s enough."

Yet another reason that "North Dakota" must not be chosen. For you no nicknamers, A vote for "North Dakota" is essentially a vote for Nodaks!!
-
I don't put that much faith in the committee getting that all figured out at the next meeting. NArrowing the list down to 2 or 3 names to be voted on is going to take up much of the time. I predict a vote will not happen until Early September when the students are back in town. They will obviously be ones that get to vote, as they should be.

Another honest question, how is the running game going to adjust with life without Crockett? Sure you have guys that can step up and be serviceable or more. But Crockett was the best runningback in school history. How much is that going to affect the Bison running game, and in turn affect the entire offense?

His last line in the article should pretty much but to rest any debate of which nickname shoud be selected from the final 7: "a nickname that exudes strength, confidence, bravery and hope" Now, does Green Hawks, Fighting Hawks, Sundogs, North Stars, Nodaks, or no nickname at all represent any of the traits listed above? So if the Herald is picking on those traits, their pick will be Roughriders. If the general public was smart, they would vote on those traits and the others that have been mentioned before by the committee. Sorry no nickname fans, "North Dakota" does not do that.

More than one. Remember that "North Dakota" finished 7 out of 7 when they scored each name and narrowed the list down.

Just to close out the era where both schools were in D2... 2000 - 2003 NDSU - 0 national shampionships, 0 conference championships, won nickel 1 of 4 times, 1 playoff appearence UND - 1 national championship, 1 national champiionship runner up, 2 conference championships, won nickel 3 or 4 times, 2 playoff appearances Maybe Darrell gor overwhelmed by all the dominance in the early 2000's that carried over!!

The truth hurts.

Unfortunately there are many people that have not moved on and can't get over the Fighting Sioux name being retired. I understand the pride that it brought for this community and its fans. But people need to realize that the name is gone. It is never coming back. Supporting the idea of not choosing a nickname is a feeble attempt to hold on to the Fighting Sioux nickname. People that say no name is good enough to replace it are hanging on to the old name and are unwilling to move forward. Everyone has their own way of dealing with change. But it's been 3 years since the name has officially been retired. It is time to accept change and support a new name. It is what is best for the University, it's athletic teams and atheletes, and more importantly a fanbase so they can finally move on.

I think that the results of a final vote weigh very heavily on whether on the number of names being voted on. If it is North Dakota or Roughriders, I think Roughriders wins because it would basically be a vote between selecting a new nickname or not having a nickname. I beleieve those results would lean towards people wanting to move on and selecting a new nickname. However, if 3 names are on the final vote, the 3rd name like North Stars would split the "We want a new nickname" vote and the "we don't want a new nickname" vote would win and just "North Dakota" would come out on top. A comparison would be what Ross Perot did to the presidential election in 1992. That being said, I am hoping that "North Dakota" will not be an option for the final vote and the vote can actually be a vote for a new nickname as opposed to a vote where no nickname is an option.

Is that an interlocking ND at midfield? Looks fabulous!!

Unfortunately I have a brother who cheers for a certain MVFC school in Fargo that is constantly trolling my about this "fact". It is tough to say which is true. Either Big Sky teams have great offenses or have soft defenses. Varies with each team. Some have both. (EWU the last 3 years). UND has neither......or at least last year. My hope for the 2015 UND team is to have the top defense in the Big Sky and an offense in the top 6 in offese. If that happens, we should be in the top 3-4 of the Sky.
-
The key to offensive success, especially relating to QB success, really depends on the support the QB (whover that is) gets. An improved offensive line will help that, obviously. Other players on offense will have to step up to make the QB's job easier. That being said, If we can develop a defensive as good as ones we know UND can have under Bubba, the offensive numbers don't have to be out of this world. Our offfensive won't have to put up huge numbers if our defense can hold teams down. If our defensive can shut the other team down, scoring 17-24 points a game may be enough to win. Obviously out of the ordinarry for games in the offensive minded Big Sky, but UND can be very god and stand out and the defensive power house we know they can be. LAst year was a huge step. This year could be a statement!

I think we all realize what voting "North Dakota" really means
-
OK, looks like I will have to do the math for some people on here. No nickname (or North Dakota in the poll) got 33.64% of the total votes. The other 6 got 66.36% vote combined. So a logical conclussion would be that 66.36% of people favored either Roughriders, Nodaks, Green Hawks, Fighting Hawks, North Stars or Sundogs. The poll didn't ask simply nickname or no nickname, but it is fair to make the conclusion based on the numbers.

http://www.inforum.com/news/3767454-inforum-poll-finds-und-fans-want-north-dakota If 33.64% of the people voted to have no nickname and just be 'North Dakota', do some quick math and tell me me what percentage voted for a differenct nickname. I'll save you some time and just let you know that it is MORE than 33.64%

Alright, time for a reality check for all those "no name" "just be North Dakota" supporters out there. In case you all forgot, I direct you to the voting results from the June 15th committee meeting that narrowed the list down to the current 7. http://und.edu/university-public-affairs/nickname/6-15-15.cfm "North Dakota" finished last in the remaining 7 and it was last with a bullet. Recieving 14 less votes than the 6th highest point getter Green Hawks. The list will be most likely narrowed down to 2-4 finalist to be voted on. If you think that all of a sudden the committee is going to springboard a name option to make a final 3, you are kidding yourselves. Sure it may be popular with many fans, but the fans don't get a say, YET. The committee is responsible for narrowing the list down again for a final vote. If they follow the trend in this latest vote, "North Dakota" will not be moving forward.

You mean everyone will know that the U?niversity of North Dakota is the only school without a nickname. "The team formerly known as the Fighting Sioux". The school where some people refer to the teams as North Dakota, some refer to them as the Sioux, some just yell "let's go guys/girls" at games. Is this the identity you want UND to have?
-
OK, so let me add another choice for you: F) Other. and please explain your reason.
-
bigskyvikes, are you a fan of being just "North Dakota" because : A) By being "North Dakota" and not having a nickname, UND will unnoficially be known as the Fighting Sioux and you can still reference them as such B) You are a stubborn "Fighting Sioux Forever" fan who refuses to move on from the old name C) You are a hockey only fan that doesn't want UND to have a new logo that will replace the Fighting Sioux logo on your jersey D) You want UND to risk not fullfilling the settlement agreement with the NCAA that no one has asked if UND would be violating by staying just North Dakota E) All of the above
-
So Going to one of the Power conferences is not an easy task to say the least. Sure UND could do all the things you listed above. But, the most importatnt requirement that you didn't list is the BIG10 actually wanting UND and inviting them into the conference. A lot of money could be spent with no gaurantee of the BIG or any power conference wanting to extend an invitation. Sure, you can think big. But, the Big10 is not going to invite any Dakota school. An UND is not going to raise and spend up 3/4 of a billion dollars on a slim chance to join a conference. (Don't we always make fun of Bison fans talking about joining the BIG 12 in all sports??)
-
When I look at that, I instantly think "Roughriders"!! I'll pass/

Quit living in the past!!

Anyone that Sundogs ranked higher than 7th in the remaining list I find hard to take seriously!!

With all this controversy over flags lately, might be a bad idea!
